cawthon777 0 Report post Posted April 6, 2008 This Day in Wrestling History – April 6 Covering both WWE and WCW 1963: Buddy Rogers, the recognized world champion in the northeast, defends the title against Bobo Brazil at the Baltimore Civic Center. 1965: Bruno Sammartino defends the WWWF World Title against Gene Kiniski at the Catholic Youth Center in Scranton, PA. 1968: A card at the Philadelphia Arena is headlined by the Kentucky Butcher beating WWWF World Champion Bruno Sammartino via count-out. Victor Rivera vs. Prof. Toru Tanaka and Earl Maynard vs. Bull Ramos fills out the undercard. 1974: WWWF World Champion Bruno Sammartino beats Don Leo Jonathan at 26:41 in their match at the Philadelphia Arena. 1976: Andre the Giant and Superstar Billy Graham fight to a double count-out in Portland, Maine. 1979: WWWF World Champion Bob Backlund defeats Peter Maivia in Staten Island, NY. 1981: WWF World Champion Bob Backlund successfully defends the title against Stan Hansen in a steel cage match at MSG. The card also featured Pat Patterson and Sgt. Slaughter going to a double disqualification and Mil Mascaras over Moondog King. 1982: A benefit show in Flushing, NY featured Andre the Giant & Rick McGraw facing Jesse Ventura & Adrian Adonis. 1984: A TV taping at St. Louis’ Kiel Auditorium features WWF World Champion Hulk Hogan beating Big John Studd in a steel cage match and WWF IC Champion Tito Santana fighting Adrian Adonis to a 30-minute time-limit draw. A show at the Nassau Coliseum the same day features Sgt. Slaughter and the Iron Sheik fighting to a double disqualification, Greg Valentine over Ivan Putski, and Bob Backlund beating Sika. 1991: A show co-promoted by the WWF and Arena Wrestling Alliance in New Zealand is headlined by the Bushwhackers vs. WWF Tag Team Champions the Nasty Boys with Don Muraco, the Genius, Koko B. Ware, the Brooklyn Brawler, and Jim Powers filling out the undercard. 1991: A show at the Greensboro Coliseum features El Gigante beating WCW World Champion Ric Flair via disqualification, Arn Anderson & Barry Windham beating Sting & Brian Pillman, and Ron Simmons over Butch Reed. Big Van Vader, Owen Hart, Sid Vicious, and Dustin Rhodes filled out the undercard. 1992: A TV taping in Macon, GA includes Big Van Vader beating an unknown with Sting’s Scorpion Deathlock. Moments later, Sting came out to make the save but was beaten down and put in the hold as well. In the dark match main event, Sting pinned Vader in a WCW World Title match. 1993: A WCW Saturday Night taping at Atlanta’s Center Stage Theatre featured an in-ring brawl between Arn Anderson and NWA World Champion Barry Windham and Cactus Jack beating WCW World Champion Big Van Vader via count-out. A rematch was immediately made for the following week’s show. That rematch resulted in Cactus being powerbombed on the floor. 1993: A WWF Superstars taping in Tucson features the beginnings of the Tatanka / Bam Bam Bigelow feud as Tatanka came to Sensational Sherri’s aid in a confrontation with Bigelow. Later in the show, Bigelow attacked Tatanka backstage and cut off some of his hair. The taping also included Mr. Perfect going to a time-limit draw with Doink, Razor Ramon beating Tito Santana, and Tatanka beating Giant Gonzalez in King of the Ring qualifying matches. 1997: WCW’s Spring Stampede in Tupelo, MS features Diamond Dallas Page pinning Randy Savage, Lex Luger winning the #1 contender spot, Kevin Nash successfully defending the WCW Tag Team Titles by beating Rick Steiner, and Chris Benoit fighting WCW US Champion Dean Malenko to a no contest. 1998: The post-WrestleMania tour stop in Berlin, Germany features WWF World Champion Steve Austin over WWF European Champion Triple H, the Undertaker beating Kane, and Ken Shamrock & Owen Hart over WWF IC Champion the Rock & D-Lo Brown. 1998: WCW Monday Nitro in Miami includes WCW World Champion Sting beating Kevin Nash via disqualification, WCW Cruiserweight Champion Chris Jericho over Juventud Guerrera, and Curt Hennig & Brian Adams over Davey Boy Smith & Jim Neidhart. 2002: Raw and Smackdown! hold their first weekend of house shows after splitting off as separate brands. Among the Raw highlights in Salt Lake City was the Hardcore title changing hands four times before Bubba Ray Dudley eventually wins it back, WWF IC Champion Rob Van Dam beating Eddie Guerrero, and the Undertaker pinning Steve Austin in a No DQ match. Smackdown!’s show in Davis, CA featured Diamond Dallas Page over Christian, Edge over Kurt Angle, and WWF World Champion Triple H defeating Chris Jericho. 2004: The Smackdown! taping in San Antonio featured a newly turned heel John Bradshaw Layfield winning the ‘Great American Award’ and the #1 contender spot after video footage showed him catching illegal immigrants crossing into Texas.
