Desert Island Draft: Movie Edition

Recommended Posts

UPDATE!

Corey's time has elapsed.

Jorge was already timed out so he's got 2 make-up picks.

It's CM Funk's turn but only until 1:13 pm EST.

So in less than an hour, it's Darthtiki's time to pick.

American Hardcore: The History of American Punk 1980-1986 - Paul Rachman (2006)

It's not THE definitive documentary about hardcore, as in not being amazing, but it's the best there is at the time. Much better than any VH1 special could ever hope to be, anyway. It's still good for the soundtrack, and for some of the stories told by members of Minor Threat, SS Decontrol, Cro-Mags, and Black Flag. Also, on the DVD there's a deleted interview with Dave Brockie (GWAR, Dave Brockie Experience, X-Cops, Death Piggy) that is utterly fucking hilarious, as just about any interview with the man is.

I'm also going to be a maggot feasting on Ravenbomb's rotting draft corpse:

Casablanca - Dir. Michael Curitz 1942

Quite simply one of the best ever. Bogey's Rick Blaine is one of cinema's great badasses.

I wish I could have picked Casablanca but that's what I get for holding the game up.

Blue Velvet

Look at the way they're all standing in the In Dreams sequence. Probably the most uncomfortable a Lynch film, or any movie, has ever made me. The whole film is brilliant.

Don't lie back and rest just yet, it goes back to you in like eight hours. We're still a bit backlogged, it's now Mole's, Darth's, and Funk's turns.

Okay, this doesn't come out for another 2 days but I saw the advance last night and damn is it everything I expected.

A Clockwork Orange

I wanted something that was a prime example of Kubrick's general style (not to say 2001 isn't obviously a "Kubrick film"), and here it is. Wonderfully entertaining. I could listen to the narration all day.

Talk about a movie that did not live up to my expectations. Don't get me wrong I loved Malcolm McDowell but the movie left me very underwhelmed.

I was never a fan of that one either, primarily because I violently disagreed with its main message. I didn't give a shit what bad stuff happened to Alex or how he was reprogrammed or any of that. He deserved every single thing he got: murderer, rapist, general sociopath causing widespread havoc to many people. Fuck that guy, torture him however you want.

From Russia With Love

Probably the best Bond movie. Or at least the best Connery one (some days I think On Her Majesty's Secret Service may be its equal/better. Not today, though). At this point the series's decent into camp was a few years off and they were still mostly playing it straight. No one could mistake it for anything other than a Bond movie, but it's grittier/REALER than most everything that came after (save License to Kill and Casino Royale, obv). A lot of it plays like pulpier, less well-crafted Hitchcock (cf. the fight on the train, the helicopter chase, etc). It's awesome, basically.

High Fidelity

It popped up in the alternate movie draft and I went "Uh oh, better grab it next."

I'm a big fan of Nick Hornby's novels as I really relate to his "man-boy" main characters. This is the best movie adaptation of any of them.

Gotta have some John Cusack too...

Amelie.jpg

Amelie

Technically you could sorta count Eternal Sunshine or Shaun of the Dead as a romantic comedy, but I figured I needed at least one straight-up chick flick, and it was either this or Moulin Rouge. Since this one had subtitles, I figured it wouldn't hurt my mad street cred, yo. Amelie is the movie where Jean-Pierre Jeunet's unique direction skill finally grew up and figured out what it was best at; not bizarre people murdering each other in ugly ways like in most of his movies, but simply showing a world full of love and heartbreak. One (of many) of my favorite part of this is when you later see that one of Amelie's good deeds has utterly backfired on the people she tried to help, and that sort of deliberate hanging of loose ends is the type of thing that the Nora Ephrons of the world just don't understand.

Pan's Labyrinth - Guillermo del Toro (2006)

Grotesque beauty. Wonderful acting, and del Toro's direction is...grotesquely beautiful. This remains the only sub-titled movie that my girlfriend likes (she hates sub-titles), and the acting is so great that I don't even think a bad dubjob could tarnish the movie itself.

Well I was going to use this pick to take Dark knight after I got back from the screening tonight (assuming I liked it...which I will) but now that's all gone.

So I'll take...

Monster Squad
