Let's Talk About...Kevin Sullivan's run with the book in WCW i

Recommended Posts

Wikipedia says Big Al was Al Green but I know for a fact that isn't true. Big Al was a lot younger and was way taller than the future Dog. For some reason, I could have sworn Big Al was in ECW for a little while under a name before his inauspicious WCW run.

I've heard some people claim Big Al was 911, but it doesn't seem like the same guy to me unless 911 shaved and cut his hair and went with a blonde look.

This is very frightening, but I checked out an Observer list to see if WCW had any matches from early 2000 that were even *** affairs. There was ONE match at all of any kind (DDP/Bagwell from Souled Out got ***1/4). Spring Stampede 2000 at least did have a couple of matches that were rated ***+. But imagine that, for the first 3 months of 2000 WCW produced exactly one match that was decent, and it involved Bagwell.

I know that 911 did some jobber work in WCW in 1996 under the Big Al moniker. I have no memory of Big Al in 2000, whoever was in the role.

911 was in WCW as Tombstone, and I do think that at one point they had changed his name to Big Al (this was in the '96-'98 era), which is where the confusion comes from. The one who fought Tank Abbott wasn't him, just using the same moniker.

Just watched a Nitro match from 04/14/97 where 911 (as Big Al) was squashed by The Giant.

The Big Al from 2000 is a different person altogether, though.

I thought 911's name in WCW was Tombstone.

Early '00 WCW did produce a few more decent matches than The Observer gave credit for. Note the emphasis on a few.But again none were more than **1/2-***.

While it paled in comparison to the battles they had in their heydays, I remember The Terry Funk-Ric Flair Texas Death Match at SuperBrawl X was decent. The stretcher match between The Mamalukes and David Flair there was pretty fun. I haven't seen it since I first watched the PPV eight years ago but I thought Fit Finlay Vs Vampiro at Uncensored 2000 was one of Vampiro's better matches and the MOTN (Not saying much really). There was also the occassional decent TV match, usually on Saturday Night. Three Count and The Jung Dragons started their series. I remember a decent TAFKAPI-Mike Modest match on the Spring Break Nitro back when TAFKAPI had the title and Modest upset him (it was non title obviously). Of course, it being WCW, the next new Nitro was Vince Russo and Bischoff's return and we didn't see Mike Modest again until early '01 when he and Christopher Daniels were getting pummeled by Scott Steiner.

Again, all small beans. And I'm not sure if there's another three month period in professional wrestling history where a major federation doesn't have a match that isn't more than ***. Except maybe the last year or so of AWA and by then, they weren't major league by any stretch of the imagination.

I've also heard the stretcher match between the Mamalukes and David Flair was pretty decent, but what does it say about a PPV when DAVID FLAIR was in the MOTN. Going back and watching Uncensored 2000, it really isn't all that bad. Norman Smiley's stuff on shows in 2000 were hilarious, and I also agree that the match between Finlay and Vampiro was pretty good and underrated, even if it did rip off Benoit/Sullivan.

And let's not forget his AWESOME run as Commissioner! Like when he went completely insane and thought he was Commissioner Gordon, and actually spent television time pontificating on why Bruce Wayne and Batman were never seen together.

Please tell me someone has a clip of this.

I too would love to see this, as I found a lot of those weird Nash skits from 99 and 2000 to be really funny. Come to think of it, I've always liked Nash, the guy is hilarious.

Ironically the least I have ever liked Nash was when he was the world champ in 1995. Yes, I even liked him as Vinnie Vegas when he was a jobber in WCW. Thing is, the stuff Nash is good at (like being a wiseass) isn't really something you can do as world champ and draw money.
