Guest Smues Report post Posted November 12, 2008 Here's Round 2 GROUP A "Build me up Buttercup" by The Foundations vs "Ring Of Fire" by Johnny Cash -Both songs are great, but Build me up Buttercup is greater. Ring of Fire doesn't inspire me to crank the volume and sing at the top of my lungs. "8 Miles High" by the Byrds vs Respect" by Aretha Franklin -I've heard people (Kornheiser) say they prefer Marvin Gayes' version, but I'll always prefer Franklin's. "Hang On Sloopy" by The McCoys vs "Cupid" by Sam Cooke - That homeless guy could really belt this one out. He had one other song he sang, but I can't remember what it was at the time. "Sunshine Of Your Love" by Cream vs "She's Not There" by The Zombies - In High School we played Sunshine of your Love in pepband at basketball games, and one year we played She's Not There in marching band. It didn't really translate to marching music that well. "The House Of The Rising Sun" by the Animals vs "Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkle - The Simpsons Grandpa version of Sounds of Silence was brilliant. "Bonnie and Clyde" by Serge Gainsbourg & Brigitte Bardot vs "She Loves You" by The Beatles - Beatles for the win "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye vs "Mr. Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan - If Dylan hadn't written this, then we'd have never been treated to the William Shatner version. MR. TAMBOURINE MANNNNNNNNNN "Good Vibrations" by Beach Boys vs "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash - Sorry Johnny GROUP B "Eight Days A Week" by The Beatles vs "Dance to the Music" by Sly & the Family Stone - I wanted to name our dog Sly and name the cat The Family Stone, but my wife said no. "My Way" by Frank Sinatra vs "Hey Jude" by The Beatles - Again, I just never cared much for Hey Jude. And Frank Sinatra was the man. "My Girl" by The Temptations vs "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks - The thought of a dying McCully Culkin can only take My Girl so far. You Really Got Me is just better. "Dazed and Confused" by Led Zeppelin vs "Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son was never my favorite CCR anyway, and then they had to go and use it in Die Hard 4 and now I have to associate it with the "I'm a Mac" douchebag? Pass. "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In" by The First Edition vs "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles - Even though I don't like A Day in the Life, it's still the Beatles, and I'm too lazy to go listen to Just Dropped In since I dont know it. "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King vs "Visions of Johanna" by Bob Dylan - For some reason I often confuse Stand By Me with Lean On Me. Lean is better, but Stand is still good. "Daydream Believer" by The Monkees vs "Jumpin Jack Flash" by The Rolling Stones - MacArthur Park got jobbed. "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison vs "A Change Is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke - <Insert comment on songs here> GROUP C "Space Oddity" by David Bowie vs "Oh, Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison - Great song, decent movie too. "Can't Help Falling In Love" by Elvis Presley vs "Only The Lonely" by Roy Orbison - Because I want Roy vs Roy in round 3. "Then He Kissed Me" by The Crystals vs "Street Fighting Man" by The Rolling Stones - A Street Fighting Man like Ryu or Ken? "Crimson and Clover" by Tommy James and the Shondells vs "My Generation" by The Who - Yes, some people do dislike Crimson and Clover. I don't get the love that song gets. "Gloria" by Them vs "Purple Haze" by The Jimi Hendriz Expierence - A classic "The Weight" by The Band vs "Bad Moon Rising" by Creedence Clearwater Revival - A bad moon oh noes. "Time of The Season" by The Zombies vs "Heroin" by The Velvete Underground - Why not? "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys vs "Reach Out, I'll Be There" by The Four Tops - A lot tougher choice then it looks. GROUP D "Venus in Furs" by The Velvet Underground vs "Catch The Wind" by Donovan - I don't really want to catch the wind. "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5 vs "Tears of a Clown" by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles - Do clowns really cry? "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the MGs vs "Turn, Turn, Turn" by The Birds - This playing while Kent Brockman was riding that carosaul was awesome. "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan vs "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding - Wastin' tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiIIIIIMMMMMMMMMMmmeeeeeee "21st Century Schizoid Man" by King Crimson vs "Gimme Shelter" by Rolling Stones - Stones "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" by James Brown vs "Break on Through" by The Doors - Yay I get to vote for James Brown this time. I hate the Doors. "Norwegian Wood" by Beatles vs "Scarborough Fair" by Simon & Garfunkel - The Beatles I guess. "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong vs "Come See About Me" by The Supremes - Only one Supremes song made it out of the first round? Wow.

PILLS! PILLS! PILLS! 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2008 Surprisingly, I found voting in this second go to be much more peremptory compared to the first round. I voted against some of my initial selections too; even when pitted against numbers that I helped to move into this stage. Here goes: "Ring Of Fire" by Johnny Cash "Respect" by Aretha Franklin "Hang On Sloopy" by The McCoys "She's Not There" by The Zombies "Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkle "She Loves You" by The Beatles "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye "Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash "Eight Days A Week" by The Beatles "Hey Jude" by The Beatles "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks "Fortunate Son" by Creedence Clearwater Revival "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles "Stand By Me" by Ben E. Guest Israeli Mixed Wrestling Report post Posted November 12, 2008 First of all I just want to express how happy I am that "Age of Aquarius" was one-and-done. That is one of the most wretched songs ever conceived, composed, performed, recorded, released, and played. No hyperbole on my part. It's one of those little chestnuts of shit that somehow represents everything that was awful about the 1960s. Good riddance, thank fuck. That said, with the field down to 64, I think it's time to offer more thoughts. "Build me up Buttercup" by The Foundations: taking it to the finals. You have to sing along. It's like a rule! "Respect" by Aretha Franklin: I will push as much Stax as far as I can. I know it's overplayed and people thus hate it, but quit thinking about Aretha, and think of those horns! Yeah! The guitar! "Hang On Sloopy" by The McCoys: This is one of the only High School Pep Band's Greatest Hits I haven't soured on, like I did with "Smoke on the Water," "Sunshine of Your Love," and (Also safe: Stax classics "Green Onions" and "Soulfinger.") "She's Not There" by The Zombies: I repeat, in the spirit of flagrant electioneering: NEVER TRUST ANYBODY OVER 90!! "Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel: "House of the Rising Sun" is very much badass, but this is one of those transcendent songs that has to win out for now. Tom Wilson, probably the most fantastically important and influential producer whom we don't much talk about here (Teo Macero would be the other; in contrast we've given Messrs. Martin and Eno their propers many times over) basically popularized folk rock by overdubbing electrics/rhythm section over what would otherwise by a boring old song. This song enabled Simon & Garfunkel to continue as a duo and crank out some really good stuff, which in turn enabled Paul Simon to grow a dopey moustache and embark on a solo career of half-baked middlebrow wallpaper and bumbling yuppie minstrelsy. Also, the song in and of itself is one of the great full-song crescendos, n'est-ce pas? It's one big slow build up to "THE WORDS OF THE PROPHETS ARE WRITTEN ON THE SUBWAY WALLS!", and I love it. "She Loves You" by The Beatles: I wanted to push Serge along, but this is one of my favorite early Beatles songs, this and "Please Please Me." Again, great musical moment: "with a LOVE/LIKE/THAT..." to the end. Awww, man. Melodic/harmonic/rhythmic perfection. "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye: This is really a fascinating arrangement. I love the slow wedding-cake build of the Rhodes, drums, tambourine, guitar, then the orchestra. Also, note the drumming: heavy on the toms, bass drum, snare, and bongos, easy on the cymbals until they're necessary. It's very dark and pulsating, distinct because of so many drummers' tendency to "ride the ride," so to speak, where they over-rely on the ride cymbal, which I feel always gets in the way. This is more open. I'm so uneasy about saying it has a "tribal" feel, but I just did it anyway. "Good Vibrations" by Beach Boys: Not my favorite Beach Boys song (that would be "I Get Around" or "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times"), but I'm pushing it along all the same. Mock-theremin love. "Eight Days A Week" by The Beatles: better than its opponent "Hey Jude" by The Beatles: I hope it doesn't come down to all Beatles, but it's like, how do you vote for inferior stuff instead, right? "My Girl" by The Temptations: Quite possibly my favorite Motown song of all. "Dazed and Confused" by Led Zeppelin: I'll be honest, I never cared for this partic Zep fave ("Whole Lotta Love" is the other one that I can do without, even more so) but it's preferable to the alternative. "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King: Look, it's just not the time for long-winded Dylan. "Sad-Eyed" is the superior longform song from that particular album, and I'm already advancing "Like a Rolling Stone." I expect a fight to the death on this one, but this is a showcase for Memphis & Motown, or ought to be, as far as I'm concerned. The vocals here. So simple, but so earnest! The string section is also top-flight, for those of us who appreciate a good pop-single string section. "Daydream Believer" by The Monkees: I'm glad it's socially acceptable to appreciate the pop proficiency of the Monkees. I know I used to make a big stink about that particular aspect of music talk, but why hold back any longer? "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison "Oh, Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison: Forced pick. "Can't Help Falling In Love" by Elvis Presley: Not doing Orbison v. Orbison. "Then He Kissed Me" by The Crystals: I don't like that Stones song. "My Generation" by The Who: I don't think I voted for this or its opponent, but hey, not so bad. "Purple Haze" by The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Not the best Hendrix song, but it's the only one here, so onward Hendrix soldier. I like Patti Smith's "Gloria" better, I think. I feel like my worldview is being updated. Or that it should be. "The Weight" by The Band: Not my favorite Band song, that'd be "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," but it's up there, and so here we are. "Time of The Season" by The Zombies: love the VU, but this isn't their place, 'specially not against one of the great organ showcases (and there were many more then!) of '60s rock. And to say nothing of the bass, the guitar, the harmonies, even the handclaps and "ahhh"s! All of those components blow my mind and STILL they're not worthy of the top billing in what makes this song so fucking awesome. This is another one that has the muscle to take this. "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys: vote for this a thousand times over. Sometimes I forget how amazing this song is and then I remind myself. "Venus in Furs" by The Velvet Underground: While no, the spirit of the thread is not one for pushing along Velvet Underground album tracks, I will not vote for Donovan. Donovan can lick my sack. "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5: Have I voted for a Jackson 5er yet? We will vote for this one. "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the MGs: Like I said about the Hair songs, "Turn, Turn, Turn" is awful '60s bullshit that should be banished from playback forever. Meanwhile, "Green Onions" is possibly the Memphis soul song to the rest of the world, will never age, and will always be loved. Potential winner. "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan: I had to go back on my Stax promise because the importance of this song mandates that it's at least in the round of 32. The Al Kooper organ part is neat, as is its legend. "Gimme Shelter" by Rolling Stones: here's the one Stones song I absolutely love, and now it makes me vote against prog. Oh well. Not the time nor place for prog. So dark, so foreboding. It makes you think of Altamont. "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" by James Brown: Hitler was a vegetarian. Haha. I hope one person gets it. Also, "Break on Through" is another '60s stinkeroo. "Norwegian Wood" by Beatles "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong: I can vote for it now! I didn't get to vote for "Down in the Boondocks" or "Under the Boardwalk"? Fuck the heck did you guys push forward instead? Retards.

Copper Feel 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2008 Ring Of Fire" by Johnny Cash This one was difficult. Respect" by Aretha Franklin I hate the Byrds. "Cupid" by Sam Cooke That 'Sloopy' song is just disgusting. "Sunshine Of Your Love" by Cream Not my favourite Cream song, but I really don't get the Zombies at all. "Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkle Two perennial favourites, but 'The House of the Rising Sun' is a cover. "She Loves You" by The Beatles Even at their most primitive, the Beatles' lyrics were still in English ('Michelle' notwithstanding) and thus their songs were better than 'Bonnie and Clyde'. "Mr. Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan The production ruins 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' and this has the most wonderful imagery of pretty much any Dylan number. "Good Vibrations" by Beach Boys Slightly overrated in terms of Beach Boys songs, but still very good. "Eight Days A Week" by The Beatles No real explanation to offer here, I just prefer it. "Hey Jude" by The Beatles I like 'My Way', but 'Hey Jude' is as good as recorded music gets. "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks Two awful songs here. "Dazed and Confused" by Led Zeppelin 'Dazed and Confused': an excellent bassline, powerful vocals and a great riff. Pure blues majesty, 'Fortunate Son': 'I AIN'T NO SENATOR'S SON' "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles My third favourite Lennon composition. "Visions of Johanna" by Bob Dylan I love 'Stand By Me' but 'Visions of Johanna' is the best thing on Blonde on Blonde. "Jumpin Jack Flash" by The Rolling Stones Not as good as 'McArthur Park' but better than the Monkees. "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison Fantastic song. "Space Oddity" by David Bowie The peak of what Bowie did in this particular decade. 'Pretty Woman' just frustrates me. "Can't Help Falling In Love" by Elvis Presley It is my secret shame that I adore the musical stylings of Elvis Presley. Orbison can fuck right off. "Street Fighting Man" by The Rolling Stones I don't like 'Street Fighting Man' as much as most Stones fanatics do, but my mysogny is going to keep it in the game. "Crimson and Clover" by Tommy James and the Shondells Great song. I don't like the Who much at all any more. "Gloria" by Them Whilst Hendrix is obviously great, I don't find him too interesting when he's working within a pop song structure. "The Weight" by The Band Haven't explored their work any further, but 'The Weight' is great. "Heroin" by The Velvete Underground Subliminal. I don't like the Zombies, as I mentioned earlier. "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys Sorry to pull a Smues, but I don't even have to hear the other song to make an informed decision on this one. "Venus in Furs" by The Velvet Underground This one was hard. Well, not really, but it stings to have to vote against my own nomination. "Tears of a Clown" by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles The Jackson 5 were really rubbish. "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the MGs Good instrumental. "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan One of the greatest songs ever. "21st Century Schizoid Man" by King Crimson Best album opener ever? Care to name a better one? Also, 'Gimme Shelter' is another Stones song I feel is slightly overrated. "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" by James Brown The Doors have atleast 30 better songs than the one selected here. "Scarborough Fair" by Simon & Garfunkel Yeah. "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong I far prefer his earlier material, but this is still good.

Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 12, 2008 I don't get your logic in this one, Czech. It seems you're voting for songs that are representative of popular opinion at the time. "Not the time for prog"? I'm just voting for the songs I like more. That said, I fucking hate Build Me Up Buttercup, and am psychologically urged to reach for a knife and a victim every time I hear it. I seriously, wholly, hate that goddamn song. Like, top ten songs I hate for all eternity. It's not quite Smash Mouth or Soul Asylum levels, but it's right there.
Guest Israeli Mixed Wrestling Report post Posted November 12, 2008 It's mostly what I like more, but there's a certain dash of the zeitgeist involved. The production ruins 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' Oh, hand in your card, charlatan. Also kind of a bummer that "Unchained Melody" didn't make the cut, since that was the catalyst for a pretty good off-board TSM moment.

Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2008 I love Led Zeppelin about as much as one guy possibly could, and even I'm not that into "Dazed and Confused." Couldn't we have gotten a better representative? Shit, "How Many More Times" is right there on that first album and superior in every way. Now that I think about it, II came out in 1969. "Whole Lotta Love" doesn't crack the top 128 songs of the '60s? Get right the fuck outta here.
Henry Spencer 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2008 I'm not crazy about Dazed & Confused either, but it's better than either of the songs you mentioned.
PUT THAT DICK IN MY MOUTH! 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2008 You guys are nuts. "Dazed and Confused" is the best Led Zeppelin song that's not called "When the Levee Breaks." It's just pure indomitable shit-kicking greatness. That bassline! Those drumrolls! Luv it.
Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2008 If I was separating Led Zeppelin songs into the categories of Great, Good and Average ("Hot Dog" is the only thing in their catalog that falls below average), I'd definitely drop "Dazed..." into the bottom rung. The bow playing is cool as a novelty, but I've already expressed that it's better used on "How Many More Times." Otherwise I've never been overly impressed. Then again, I've always enjoyed that bloated hard rock from the group's later days over the experimental psychedic blues of their early work. Probably why I'm the only guy in the world that likes Presence.
Guest Smues Report post Posted November 12, 2008 First of all I just want to express how happy I am that "Age of Aquarius" was one-and-done. That is one of the most wretched songs ever conceived, composed, performed, recorded, released, and played. No hyperbole on my part. It's one of those little chestnuts of shit that somehow represents everything that was awful about the 1960s. Good riddance, thank fuck. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who feels that way. I was more happy that Year 2525 is gone, but Aquarius going down too was a great one two punch.

godthedog 0 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 GROUP A "Build me up Buttercup" by The Foundations good clean fun. i never liked ring of fire that much, truth be told. Respect" by Aretha Franklin "Cupid" by Sam Cooke not his best song by a longshot, but i would like to see him push through. "She's Not There" by The Zombies great great great song. cream has worn a little thin on me. "The House Of The Rising Sun" by the Animals fucking best use of an organ ever. "She Loves You" by The Beatles "Mr. Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan very tough decision. "Good Vibrations" by Beach Boys not a very tough decision. GROUP B "Dance to the Music" by Sly & the Family Stone not a big fan of this one, but i just hate eight days a week. "Hey Jude" by The Beatles no contest. "My Girl" by The Temptations too bad this one is so overplayed. awesome, simple song. "Dazed and Confused" by Led Zeppelin "A Day in the Life" by The Beatles duh. "Visions of Johanna" by Bob Dylan "Jumpin Jack Flash" by The Rolling Stones "A Change Is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke i would really love to see this one make it to the final 4. so god damn beautiful. GROUP C "Space Oddity" by David Bowie "Can't Help Falling In Love" by Elvis Presley "Then He Kissed Me" by The Crystals "My Generation" by The Who "Purple Haze" by The Jimi Hendriz Expierence "The Weight" by The Band "Heroin" by The Velvete Underground "Reach Out, I'll Be There" by The Four Tops GROUP D "Catch The Wind" by Donovan "Tears of a Clown" by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the MGs "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan "Gimme Shelter" by Rolling Stones "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" by James Brown "Norwegian Wood" by Beatles "Come See About Me" by The Supremes i have a feeling that in 2 rounds or less, all the songs by black people will be gone. obama is but a hollow victory now. Guest Israeli Mixed Wrestling Report post Posted November 13, 2008 Jackson 5, rubbish? Puh-shaw. I think you're missing the experience of riding in the way-back of the minivan with your family as a wee youth, listening to your parents' oldies station on long drives to summer homes and county fairs. This is, of course, before the oldies format went straight to hell and started implementing late-'70s stuff and even, gasp!, 1980s music. Round these parts, it was about a seven-year skid till they flipped to sorry-ass Jack FM in 2005; the Milwaukee station from the north leg of those summer home trips took so long to stop being oldies that you didn't notice till it was too late. But yeah, that's when you forge a deep love for these songs, before you even know the names or the artists. I suppose there's no way to retroactively go about it once your music brain is hard-wired. I feel like Cyber Mark would have it all come down to Beatles and Bob Dylan were it up to him.

King Kamala 0 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 Jacksons 5 overrated? Perhaps. A substitute teacher of mine in high school even presented a somewhat compelling argument that the ascension of The Jackson 5 is when Motown jumped the shark. But rubbish? Pus-shaw indeed. The first Greatest Hits album was the soundtrack to my childhood. And The Epic label era stuff is a nice precursor to Off The Wall. And for my money, there's no music video more enjoyably bombastic and overblown than the one for "Can You Feel It?"!
