.avi files won't play on my computer

Well, it's not that the .avi won't play, it's just that when i do play them, I get a scambled black and white image. I can still hear it, but no image. I tried downloading Divx or something like that, but it didn't work. I've tried updating my windows media player, but that didn't work either.

 

Is there anything else I could do, or should I just accept that my computer sucks and start erasing my .avi files?

Yeah, I tried updating my codec stuff and all, but still no go. I guess it's time to give up hope on my avi's and start clearing space for trust old mpegs.

I have this same problem right now. When I play .avi files all i hear is the sound from the file but no video. It's like Windows Media player treats it like it's a sound file. I've even tried playing it in different media players and still the same results.

 

My OS is Windows 98...

 

Anyone know how to help us?

All right everybody. Updating codecs isn't everything. You need to update ALL codecs. Go to free-codecs.com, and download their mega-pack that includes all codecs. Once you do that, if it still doesn't work, go to microsoft.com and search their knowledge base.
