All Time Yankees Draft

A mini-MLB draft is in the works. Instead of the whole of MLB history for this one, we are going to focus solely on the New York Yankees. Why the Yankees, a team I despise? They simply have the talent necessary to sustain this kind of idea. I'd run Phillies, but who is going to get excited over Fred Luderus?

We have five entrants. Myself, Canadian Chris, Smues, Brooklyn Zoo and 161st and River. One more person can join in if they are interested.

Here are the basics.

1. 21 man rosters (eight position players and a DH, three reserves, five starters, three relievers, and a manager)

2. You draft a player's career ONLY as a Yankee. If you draft Randy Johnson, you're getting 34 career victories.

3. A player may only be chosen either as a manager or player. A player may not be chosen twice for each role. Two exceptions, Hal Chase and Clark Griffith may be player-managers.

4. All home parks are assumed to be Yankee Stadium.

I'm going to name my team the Giants. We need at least one team with that name.

The Giants select Bill Skowron. Skowron made the All-Star game in five consecutive seasons for the Yankees, starting the game four times.

I guess I'm going to have to make up a list of players I want and PM them to one of you guys, because I'm going away on Saturday and won't be back til next Saturday.

Anway, the Gothams select:

Waite Hoyt and Joe Torre

I really didn't want a manager yet, but the run for the top ones started a lot earlier than I thought it would.

Highlanders select Tommy John.

So I got a guy who had a disease named after him and now a guy with a surgery named after him. BEAT THAT!

Gil McDougald

A utility infielder who spent time at third, second and shortstop, fielding well at all three positions. (Casey Stengel loved moving his players around.) McDougald hit .276/.356/.410 in ten seasons for the Yankees. He made five all star teams and won the Rookie of the Year award in 1951. Yankee Stadium killed his home run power. He hit 56 home runs from 1956-60, only 12 of them at home.

While McDougald can play three infield positions, I anticipate making him my starting third baseman.

Dodgers select:

David Cone

Throw out the 2000 season and he was pretty awesome in pinstripes. Two-time All-Star and three times in the top 6 of the Cy Young balloting. He's also the Yankees' all-time leader in strikeouts per 9 innings.

Frank "Home Run" Baker

His best years were spent with the Athletics, but he was still a very good hitter while with the Yankees. He'll be my starting third baseman.

Wow...4 of those 6 picks were on my board for the next round.

Was McDougal one of them?

My next player is a left fielder who was better than Jim Rice, dammit. Roy White produced OBPs of .380-.390 in his prime seasons. He stole 233 bases in his career, and had a fair bit of power for a righty in that ballpark. He pushes Keller to the DH role, and occupies either the 1st or 2nd slot in the lineup.

Highlanders select Alfonso Soriano.

Oh you motherfucker I KNEW I should have taken him last round.

Fuck it with my next pick I take KANO!

Sure he sucks this year, but his first three seasons were good, and he can rip out your heart!

Giants select closer Johnny Murphy. Murphy was the Yankees' first long term relief specialist, collecting 104 saves with the club and attending three All-Star games.
