All Time Yankees Draft

A mini-MLB draft is in the works. Instead of the whole of MLB history for this one, we are going to focus solely on the New York Yankees. Why the Yankees, a team I despise? They simply have the talent necessary to sustain this kind of idea. I'd run Phillies, but who is going to get excited over Fred Luderus?

We have five entrants. Myself, Canadian Chris, Smues, Brooklyn Zoo and 161st and River. One more person can join in if they are interested.

Here are the basics.

1. 21 man rosters (eight position players and a DH, three reserves, five starters, three relievers, and a manager)

2. You draft a player's career ONLY as a Yankee. If you draft Randy Johnson, you're getting 34 career victories.

3. A player may only be chosen either as a manager or player. A player may not be chosen twice for each role. Two exceptions, Hal Chase and Clark Griffith may be player-managers.

4. All home parks are assumed to be Yankee Stadium.

Oh ya I forgot about the name thing...I shall be the Highlanders.

Now I'm going to shock the world with my next pick but there is a pretty big drop off at this position after this guy.

Damn. Well, I thought it was like a 50% chance maybe that he made it back to me.

That's good, because now I know at least one of the two guys I want will be available. I expected Jeter to be gone by the time I picked.

My next selection is not as famous among baseball fans. Charlie Keller was an absolute hitting monster in his day. With the Yankees he compiled a .410 OBP and .518 slugging percentage. Unfortunately Keller missed nearly two years during World War II, and suffered a career altering back injury in 1947. To give you an idea of Keller's talent, Keller hit about .360 over two seasons in the IL, but was trapped since the Yankees already had Dimaggio, Selkirk and Henrich.

Keller will play left field on my club.

Oh yeah teamname. I'll go with Hitmen.

There's a big drop-off at both these positions, so I'll grab these two...the greatest in Yankee history at catcher (well, top two, at least, although I think mine was the best) and second base:

There are tempting hitters on the board, but my team needs an ace starter.

Lefty Gomez

189-101 record with the Yankees from 1930-42. 6-0 in the postseason, his teams won all five World Series they played. Gomez was selected to seven All-Star teams, and started the game five times! He is the only pitcher to win the All-Star game three times. Gomez twice won pitching's triple crown, in 1934 and 1937. Truly an elite pitcher in his era.

Oh yeah teamname. I'll go with Hitmen.

It has to be a real NYC baseball pro team.

I'm actually a bit surprised Mattingly lasted this long. I figured someone would be nostalgic and jump on him second round.

Brett Favre

I was going to take him over Rivera, but I figured there would be other guys who are closer to Mattingly than to Rivera.

"The name must be one used by a New York City team"

Didn't say baseball team! The Hitmen were the XFL team. But I guess then you'll just argue it has to be a current one? How about the Yankess?

Anyway:

I debated on this pick, but I can't deny his numbers.

With the 20th pick of the 2008 Pinstripe Assholes draft the Hitmen/Yankess/new name will be picked if required choose:

Jason Giambi

Yeah he's a steroid using douchebag, but his numbers speak for themselves. 8th best OP+ in Yankess history, 5th in OBP, 7th in Slugging. 195 homeruns in basically 4 full seasons and 3 half seasons. Fun fact: A couple of years ago the Yanks wanted to send him back to the minors, and the fans were screaming for his head, yet this season to date he's got 18 homeruns with an OPS+ of 147. See why 'what have you done for me lately' is bad kids?

Brett Favre

I select Thurman Munson. He's a 7 time all-star, 3 time gold glover, 2 time champ, and 1 time MVP.

My internet service may be intermittent the next few days. Instead of holding this thing up, if someone can text the draft picks to me, I can text my pick back and keep things moving.
