The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 Have any of you guys made obscure pop culture references where you as you hear the "whoosh" of it going over their heads, you stop and think "why the hell do I know this?" Example: as we were getting ready for graduation ceremonies to beign, we waited in line and talked. Somebody said "What's our school gonna be like without us? I can't imagine what'll happen after we go." and I said "Well I think our whole high school will turn out to be the delusion of an autistic child inspired by a snow globe." Yeah. St. Elsewhere. Though with all the surreality of my old place, the comparison was justified. But damned if she got it. But come on. Great show. It had Mr. Feeny!
Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 That doesn't make you a nerd. It makes you super-cool. ... but that I'm saying that probably makes you a nerd. A big one.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted June 8, 2004 i've made many a "wrestling" saying and it gone over peoples head "Man, I bet he gets a huge pop" "He was busted hardway" "Gore is so doing the job to bush" too many to reference really
Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 I think almost all of us use smark terminology in our daily language. I know I do. ... (cries)
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 I always say how I "mark out" but NOBODY SAYS ANYTHING. They just nod and go "yeah I know right?" Then again I say "There's a sale on cookies at the School Store today" and they also go "yeah I know right?" so maybe I should test this on people who aren't functional illiterates like the ones I used to go to school with. I've actually made second-degree smark references: TSM references. If somebody totally misses the point of a joke I say "WHOOSH," and if I get caught in a situation where I paint myself into a corner and make myself look bad, I just go "Yeah well I was kidding the whole time anyway! You guys have to chill out and not take everything so seriously. I'm so much better than all of you guys, so go get a life."
spiny norman 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 I probably say TSM things all the time, but don't notice. I know I've often thought them but then realised and try to rephrase myself. As for showing myself to be the strange loser we all know I can be, my school house's name is McDougall. Anyway, we had to come up with a joke name of affection for it. So as a committee member for my house I had to discuss a possible name. I came up with McDoogie Howser. Two people got it. They thought I was a nerd. Everyone else didn't get it. They, too, thought I was a nerd. I was slightly embarassed.
Nighthawk 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 I make wrestling references that people won't get intentionally. I try to fit as many of them in without them realizing I'm doing anything. Bonus points for doing it during sex. But no, this is common, because I reference the most obscure things as a rule. It makes me seem intelligent because if someone happens to catch one or two, they'll start to notice that I do it all the time, and get maybe a few if they really try. They'll begin to think that everything I say references something, making me akin to something of a puzzle with no solution, a pretty cool cat. Virtually all of my posts here contain some, like there's several inside this post.

Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2004 Given the amount of people who read the books and saw the movie, I'd say your were in the majority of people that knew who Tom Bombadil was. Now, if you'd have said "Where is Radagst the Brown?" THEN you would've been journeying into nerd-dom.

Mecha Mummy 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2004 I'll occasionally say "mark out" or "no-sell." People in my clique have more or less figured out the meaning by now.
