If any of you know me and talk to me away from TSM, you more than likely know that my personal favorite film of all time is Memento. When I first saw that movie, it just blew me away. I became obsessed with the concept and the film itself. It's been a few years ago since I first saw Memento in the theater, and I didn't think that I'd ever see a film that I enjoyed more than Memento, especially already. However, with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I might just be able to say just that. After months of waiting for this one to be released, I finally was able to check it out tonight. Wow. I've seen Memento over and over again, so I can't really say for sure that I enjoyed Eternal Sunshine more, but I do believe that once I watch it a few more times to really let everything sink in, I'll be able to say it without a doubt. I checked this film out right before I saw Dawn of the Dead (yep, double duty for me tonight), and the first thought I had after leaving the theater was that I might as well not even watch another film for a while, because no way in hell could anything even come close to the perfection of Eternal Sunshine. Charlie Kaufman is a freaking genius. From Being John to Adaptation and now this, I've decided the guy is not only screwed up in the head, but he is also a genius, period. He's just such a great writer. I've loved his work before Eternal, but this script is hands down the best that I have ever read, and it is presented on the big screen perfectly. This film isn't like his other films however, it's much deeper. Eternal is not a gimmick film, it is NOT a comedy. It's a true love story, with a Kaufman feel to it. I could go on and on talking about how perfect this film is in my eyes. The overall film itself isn't the only thing that's so great, as it's so much more than the story. The performances of everyone involved go above and beyond. Jim Carey proves once again to me that he is much more than the physical comedic actor that so many have certified him as without even taking the time to realize that he is capable of so much more than just moving around in an insane way. To me, he's just a damn fine actor. If this film doesn't prove that, then nothing will. He brings forth so many different emotions, in such a sincere way. From fright to antisocial to depression and ultimately to being totally in love. Jim Carey's chemistry with Kate Winslet, his love interest in the film, is just unreal as well. They interact with one another with just such great feel. Carey (Joel) being the antisocial type of guy when he first meets Winslet (Clementine), who is everything but antisocial, the type of woman who is totally forward and is just totally open and free, from the very start they work great together. Even though both have a totally different personality, it works together, and eventually the personalities meet in the middle, forming one hell of a bond between the two characters. The performances of the other main stars, Mark Ruffalo, Kirsten Dunst, Tom Wilkinson, and Elijah Wood, also do a great job. Everything just clicks for everyone involved, it's just a great experience on film when you have something like that happen between all of the actors involved. But back to the character of Clementine. I can't remember the last time that I saw a character in a film with such an energy that Clementine shows off. I'd go so far to say that the character is my favorite character ever. I don't know what to say about this other than just that. I could watch that character all day interact with Joel, or anything else. The look of the film, the special effects, the dialogue, the theme, all of the actors, it all fits together perfectly. I know it's cliche, but it's like a big puzzle where all of the pieces fit together in just the right way. And with Eternal, the film itself really is a huge puzzle. That isn't an exaggeration at all. The film doesn't even click in your mind until about twenty minutes in, but it's in a good way. You just have to see it to understand what I mean. So yeah, I do believe that I have a new "favorite film of all time". I could watch this one over and over again, and I know that when I do I'll notice something different each time through. Go check this one out, do NOT allow this film to go unnoticed. I know that it will more than likely not do that great at the box office, as I understand that this isn't the type of thing that the masses would really "get". Either way, have it do good or bad at the box office, WE NEED MORE FILMS LIKE THIS IN HOLLYWOOD RIGHT NOW. I can't say that enough. In a town working on so many remakes and sequels, it's refreshing to see something as original as Eternal Sunshine come out from the ashes. I'll be seeing this one again in the next week, and I already can't wait. Sincerely, ...Downhome...

The official Dawn of the Dead 1979/2004 thread
Downhome replied to Youth N Asia's topic in Television & Film
You don't get bit and then turn into a zombie. What happens, is that once you are bit you are infected, and once the infection kills you (or once you get killed while you are infected), the moment that you die, you come back to life. Every single time someone become a zombie, they died before hand. Have it be right when they were bit because their neck was torn out, or have it be they are bit on the arm, yet do not become a zombie untill they die of the infection or are killed while infected. I LOVED this movie. It was one of the most entertaining films that I've seen in years. It had gore, laughs, a few cheap thrills, some cool scenes, and on and on and on. I really loved it, and I will own the DVD as soon as it comes out. There were a couple of things I had against it, but nothing that would make me say I disliked the film as a whole. The end credits are awesome also, but I DO have two questions about the credits. SPOILERS BELOW In the flashes, am I crazy, or do they not show the "smartass" I believe his name was Luis. He was killed off before they got on the boat, so why would they show him on it at the end? Also, where did that brunette on the boat come from that took her top off right as the credits ended? I don't remember seeing her at any point in the film. I loved the ending credits, it was a very cool way to finish the film off, but those two things just had me wondering. -

I'm trying to think of another film to compare the deaths and everything to, but I'm drawing a blank right now.
-
That is the only thing that would even excuse such a rating. I'm being completely serious when I say that the movie is just about totally absent of all sexual acts. I'll even list the two in the film. This isn't really a spoiler, but if you want to be totally surprised by every scene, I'll give a WARNING. 1) There is one scene where the main gal in the film is in bed with her hand in her pants listening to music, slightly moaning. 2) Near the begining of the film, the psycho is sitting in his rusted truck. You see it moving a bit over and over, and you hear him go "ahhhhhhhh oooooooo" a few times. You don't see anything at all, other than seeing the truck move a bit and a faint impression of the guy with his head leaning backwards. This lasts for just a few seconds, and when it's over he rolls his window down holds a severed head, and drops it. Obviously implying that he gave himself a BJ with the head. Again, it didn't even show anything.

There isn't really any sexual content in it at all. I mean, a couple of things here and there but nothing that would give it such a strong rating. There isn't even any nudity in the film, aside from a single topless gal taking a shower for a few seconds, and the view of even that was far away. While I don't think it needs such a strong rating, I'd say it's been given a NC-17 over the actual violence. The effects in the movie are highly realistic, it's not over the top or anything like that. The deaths actually look brutal. I'd list a few examples, but I don't want to spoil anything, heh.

I just read that the director of this film, Alexandre Aja, is going to direct the upcoming The Hills Have Eyes remake. I knew his name sounded familier. I just got a whole hell of a lot more excited for this reamake, heh. I also just read that Lions Gate viewed this film at a screening, and they picked it up for release. Right now, it looks like it will be coming sometime this year, and it has been branded with the NC-17 rating. I'm going to watch a few more horror films in the next few days, and I'll let you know what I think of them. Horror, Undead, Dead End, Ginger Snaps II: Unleashed, and a few others.

One and Only Smackdown Thread For 3/18/04
Downhome replied to ChrisMWaters's topic in The WWE Folder
While not a MOTY, it was still DAMN good for a free TV match. This year in WWE has been fantastic, with a HUGE "smarks favorite" moment happening in each month so far. Benoit winning the RR, Eddie winning the WWE Title, and then Benoit winning the World Championship. All the while we've been getting consistantly good wrestling, and various other interesting feuds, segments, and other mark out moments. If you haven't found something that you like in 2004, then you need to just stop watching. I can't remember the last time we had a year quite like this one. -

That was sorta sad considering it's for real. -
I was going over various horror movie sites a few months ago, and over at Bloody-Disgusting I found a review for a French film, Haute Tension (English title, Switchblade Romance). After weeks and months of trying to find some way to see it, I finally found it for download a few days ago, and this evening I finally got around to watching it. It took me a while to find the subtitles anywhere, but I finally did. And I'm very glad that I did. The film is just A grade quality all the way through. The performances of the two girls being stalked Cécile De France (Marie) and Maïwenn Le Besco (Alex) are great, while Cécile does an especially good job. Then we have the protagonist, Philippe Nahon (Le tueur), who does just perfect in the role of the insane madman. This character is smart, creative, and you will hate his guts. While watching Tension, I had the same feeling that I get when watching films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the such. It's more than just a cheap teen slasher flick. It's smart and frightening. The level of tension throughout the film starts with the very first frame, and it stays high throughout the entire film. Something like that is rare in horror these days, so that is yet another reason I loved this one. The score fits perfectly in this film, and as the guy over at Bloody-Disgusting said, "The film also contains the most brilliant score I've heard in a long time. It is in the tradition of the 70's horror classics with a touch of Goblin from Argento's work.", I agree with every word of that. Then we have the director. This horror flick is Alexandre Aja's first dive into the genre, but he has a film here that makes it feel like the guy who directed it had been working on this type of film for years. He did a supurb job, and I can't wait for his next horror film, if he decides to continue down this same road. In my opinion, this Tension is better than any horror film released in the US in the past few years. If you haven't seen this one yet, then go find it. Go download it, or do whatever you need to do to check this one out. I give it a 9/10 rating, it really is that good. If any of you have already checked this one out, what did you think? Sincerely, ...Downhome...

Maybe this is a work just like Brock Lesnar quiting and going to the NFL!!! OMG maybe Ron and Brock will join together in ECW~~~~~~~~~!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I've always liked him also. I'd rather see Ron wrestle than some of these other guys WWE puts on the air. Heck, I was pulling for Ron to beat Taker for the WWF World Title back all those years ago. He'd fit in perfectly in TNA, either as a manager or some other such role, while possibly wrestling the rare match now and then to get over his storylines as a manager, etc...

Why would you even need to ask if the Mysterio DVD is worth picking up or not?
-
Here are the steps. 1) Download a client like ABC, and install it. 2) Go to a site that has torrent links and click on whatever you want (suprnova.org and it's search site novasearch.net are the best IMO). 3) There isn't a step three, ya jackass. I DO advise you to download a program like PeerGuardian or the such, to block IPs from connecting to you. Just get PeerGuardian, it's my favorite.

Here is a video of the game from IGN. The movement looks a bit jerky in places, but otherwise it looks great. The reversal of the Sharpshooter is especially cool. The commentary also sounds pretty good. http://media.sports.ign.com/articles/499/499800/vids_1.html

Gee, I wonder who wins that darn Gauntlet Match.

I cringed when JR and Lawler brought up the possibility of Benoit possibly having the title just stripped from him.

Holy crap, this is great that he's going to stick around! I've missed the guy a lot.
