If it weren’t for the sanctions Saddam could have been removed internally like other dictators in the past. Several UN diplomats that were in Iraq during the sanctions strongly believe this would have been the case.

It's ridiculous how many times the US and Israel have played their veto cards in the last thirty years. And the sanctions against Iraq crippled their economy, destroyed their infrastructure, led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of children due to lack of medicine and clean water, and perhaps most importantly, crushed any chance of a popular revolt that would have removed Saddam over a decade ago. Hardly justifiable. The stated reasons for the sanctions are also hypocritical since the US were helping Saddam's regime during the worst of his crimes.

Well, what's Chomsky think about it? Noam Chomsky would probably say we need to be compassionate and understanding towards this woman, and that her forgetting her child in her own vehicle is a sign that the borgeoise government is leaving behind the masses, or something. Addressing the root cause for this sort of negligence would make sense.

I was reading a few articles about Latin America breaking away from US control and subsequent IMF loans. Also factor in the Washington's attention in the Middle East, and it could be true. But I can't help but believe this is wishful thinking though. The WHISC (aka School of the Americas) is still at large and there have been clandestine operations to remove leaders like Chavez in Venezuela. Obviously its not as bad as the wars on Latin America were in the 80's, but who's to say Washington won't reenact their old policies in five or ten years when more countries become too independent for their liking? Yeah? This still does not justify the invasion. The US attacked Afghanistan, not the other way around. Look familiar? The acts on 9/11 were not perpetrated by the Afghani citizens, who have been the primary victims since the war began and you could just as easily tie places like Saudi Arabia and Egypt and to the 9/11 attacks. Attacking Afghanistan in response to 9/11 also justfies counter terrorism. It's also like saying Britain should have bombed the US after the IRA bombings since the US provided finances to the group.
