A society of hierarchy and coercion is contrary to human freedoms, so laws that make weed illegal are not justified and so are the subsequent punishments. It's pretty alarming that such violations of human rights are allowed to continue. Also if you look back at the times when drugs were first criminalized, the decision to criminalize them is usually based on false information and/or racism.

Regardless of the crime, nobody deserves that kind of treatment.
