Worth a try.

I know I'm probably one of the few Christians on the board, although I haven't made the point to be well-known. So basically, anyone else here into any of the music? I know it probably sucks to many of you, but to me it holds sentimental value for all the obvious reasons. Some of it actually is pretty decent music that you would listen to whether it was Christian or not, but much of the time that's not the case. Most of the stuff is guilty pleasure for me though. Jars of Clay have a pretty big following, what else are the other Christians on the board into? Oh yeah, can't forget the worship music. I like some of it, but even than, it has nothing to do with the music, but rather the message. What do y'all think?

If you were travelling to Europe right now

Anyway, Vineyard play more traditional worship music, and while I also dig the plugged in traditional rock thing (sometimes), I have to say that I prefer the more congregational feel that you get with Vineyard. Just give it a try and tell me what you think.

I don't think Rush ever had more than one Top Forty Hit (Limelight), but they're anything but one-hit wonders. Also, some bands have no real hits, but aren't unsuccessful because they're still around and such, perhaps due to a devout following. Slayer comes to mind. Inc., I stated that anyway because Weezer has had way too much success to be a one-hit wonder. But again, never mind. I can't think of many One-hit wonders, as they usually suck the big one, but I'm sure there alot of good 80s tracks and the like.

Again, I was joking, again, you took it seriously. Lighten up.

Thanks for the recommendations... Obviously I said that with Tongue in cheek, but yeah, I find it kind of annoying when people call it Xmas, rather than Christmas. It just seems disrespectful, in a way. But honestly, why would I be offended by an abbreviation? You knew that wasn't it due to the fact that I used one, but I just think that you needed to feel special about yourself or something, and thus had to put me down. Anyway, you ever listen to Vineyard? They cover alot of famous worship songs, and do a good job of it actually. I personally like the song "I Will Not Be Shaken", as it does a really good job of getting the congregation into it. My personal favourite though has to be "God of Wonders". I am sure that you can d/l it, it really is that great. I can't explain why, just listen to it and find out.

Theatre thing was a joke, you shouldn't have taken that so seriously. I know that it's not their name, but Jesus you don't need to be so anal-retentive about it, especially when I admit it. But of course knocking the spelling shows your lack of argument. They can play those classical works, like I can, but arranging and creating them is a different story. About the Top 40 thing; I Just picked them because they seem to be well-known by all. Just because they're well known doesn't mean they're any less of a band. Explain to me how Radiohead is a puppet to the recording industry, because it just sounds like you're talking through your ass again. Instead of tackling the argument, you're dismissing it, and I stand by my comment about those bands. Contrary, to what you might believe, the average Joe Blow doesn't give a shit about Radiohead, or The Police. At least today. Again, Indie snobs aren't nearly as pretentious as you make yourself out to be. I've asked time and time again for you to say something worthwhile, and you still haven't. Whatever, I feel like I'm talking to a wall. Just to point out, I still like Dream TheatRe (Are you going to cry now, Dace?), Rush, and Van Halen (one of these is not like the others), but they're wayyyyy overrated by any if all musicians.

Who the fuck would ever consider Weezer a One Hit Wonder? Whatever. I go with the guilty pleasure of Soft Cell - Tainted Love. I'm sure a few others round these parts have taken a liking to it as well.

I agree with you three. Once I see someone like that who's a complete and utter waste of time, I simply delete and block them. No need to waste a good conversation on them.

I have nothing to add to this thread except for the suggestion that Jubuki should definitely go and kick some ass in the NHB folder. Some may like your posts because you know alot about Puro, but I dig it just waiting to see who you're going to tear apart next. Keep up the good work. It's highly entertaining.

Regarding Christian music (because you won't find any Christian jazz), my tastes generally run towards things like Jars of Clay, along those lines. I am also a big fan of the worship songs, by like Vineyard and stuff. You know what I'm talking about? I could give a few recommendations of my own...

True, all the arrangements and compositions of classical music downright blow all those "technical" bands away in terms of musical prowess. On top of that, they contain the melody and soul I mentioned earlier. If you want to be "moved", if you want to listen to a technical masterpiece that is also beautifull arranged, listen to any sort of classical music. It's all good.

He stated that he wasn't for the killing of innocent Iraqi citizens, that he wasn't for the killing of American soldiers, needlessly mind you, and that he wasn't for the potential killing of others around the world... Apparently, most people that booed him are.

The Doors are the most overrated band EVER, retarded lyrics and all. It's CHRISTian, not "Xian". Like it's not that much harder to type it all out. Any good recommendations for me to listen to SP? How about any other Christians in this thread? I'm always open to new bands.

Please define "owns". In any case, I would have to say Mudhoney, Flipper, and the Melvins all "own" Nirvana. Do you know who any of them are? You should since those are the big boys that influenced and/or were ripped off (lack of a better term) by Cobain. Did you ever hear of Nirvana before "Team Spirit". If you did you would of realized the abortion of there sound that appeared on "Nevermind". You come off as a Top 40 pop puppet fan to me (correct me if I'm wrong) when comparing the darlings like Nirvana, Police, and Radiohead to the selected others. Maybe I'm taking this all too personal, but some folks here just spew mindless, ill conceived crap at times. No, I'm not a Top Forty Fan puppet (whatever the hell that means). I do know who they are, and everyone is influenced by someone else. Mudhoney, Flipper, and the Melvins helped give Cobain a style, which he perfected in my honest opinion. Tell me how he didn't. I personally would prefer the Pixies over Nirvana anyday, but I merely picked three bands that are instantly recognizable to everyone, and were great. Besides, the Pixies are better than those three anyway.... Again, all you do is make blanket statements that sound like you have your head up your ass. Why don't you actually *gasp* READ my post regarding technique and try to refute it. If my post about the three bands in question is so uninformed, why don't you inform me hmm? Seriously, call it uninformed, but yours makes you out to be extremely stupid, since you don't even bother to put up an argument. Like honestly, it's as if you didn't read anything. If you don't put forth an effort and make a post that doesn't personally insult me, but rather tackles the material therein, I'm not coming back in here, because it's simply not worth it. By the way, I think in any way, shape or form, insinuating that either Dream TheatRe, Rush, or Van Halen is above Radiohead is a ridiculous insult to a band that TRULY ascends greatness. I like the aforementioned three, but to say they're better than Radiohead shows that YOU are the one who is uninformed. Remember kids; an opinion is only worth it's own weight in justification, giving EVERYONE a chance....

Technique can just be topped though. It can just go higher and higher. Like everything I've learned in my life, I will relate it to wrestling. It's like workrate, or in some cases, the highspots. You keep topping yourself, but what are you really doing? The faster you pick, or the higher you fall, it's just a matter of outdoing someone until the point of when it just gets ridiculous and unnecessary. To have the drama, to have the performance and psychology, you need that sweeping hook, that enchanting melody, something that's unique to you, rather than something all else could come up with or play, or an exercise one does to practice.
-
I meant that he really did miss the point, about the post being about technique versus non-technique, while he thought it was about the genre. So you see, in thinking I missed the point, you in fact missed the point.

I'll make an actual post tomorrow, but I'd just like to contradict a sentiment stated earlier in this thread; if you think an indie/underground music fan is pretentious, you haven't met an actual musician. I'm a musician myself, but even I can admit that most of us tend to be extremely pretentious and snobby. By the way, I agree with you on popular music being written for the lowest common denominater, and that great music isn't really being exposed to the masses. Thing is, I have a different perception of what that great music is. More on that tomorrow though, like I said. I spell it TheatRe because I'm Canadian, eh~!
-
Probably, but I don't care enough to think about it. In fact, I'll probably forget about all this when I leave the thread...

Razazteca, are you talking about Chris Rock and "No Sex In The Champagne Room"? I actually found that one pretty funny. I nominate that song "Bizarre". It went something along the lines of "How Bizarre, how bizarre, oh how bizarre". What the fuck is up with that shit?? I think they were only around in Canada though..

Allah. With all that talk of killing for Satan I... Hah, just kidding. If you're a Muslim don't take it seriously, although I don't think that Islam is running too rampant on these boards.

and hot dogs will always be better than steak, right? Of course not. Hence, that is why I picked nirvana and Radiohead, the finer cuts of meat to be sure. DUH!

You still haven't touched my original argument about technique not being very important. The Metallica Album DID suck. It was filled with boring power chords, accompanied by a crappy solo in the middle, just so it could be given some credibility to those who didn't know better. Lars was never Buddy Rich anyways you know? The songs were also just poorly written. Where was the soul searching of Fade To Black? The Kickass of For Whom The Bell Tolls? What about the hard hitting shit known as One? No more classics, but rather glossed over Adult Hard Rock. You know, that stuff that forty year olds consider hardcore. Danko Jones falls into that category. The vocals are as terrible as ever, and the lyrics are just as asinine as before. If only to mention the fact that they purposely made the record shittier to make a buck, you hate them even more. But I must say not me, because I tend to stay away from those "Sold out" arguments. They get pretty stupid, but yeah, the Black Album is a piece of shit. Technically, melodically, whatever, it's all garbage. You also have to back up a blanket statement like "Nirvana sucks". I simply compared them because Nirvana has very little technical proficiency, but would still own Dream Theatre anyway. Just an example of how you don't need to be a great musician to make great music. You missed the point. Radiohead pushed the boundaries of music really, with innovative production being a gross understatement. Rush pushed the boundaries of unnecessary self-mastorbatory soloing on the part of Lifeson, not to mention one of the most annoying voices ever. No contest there. I'm sorry, but you pretty much lose all credibility when you call a stripper a great singer. He's essentially Shawn Michaels with a microphone. Hey, the more I think about it, the more I think HBK's entrance theme was done by Van Halen. It even has that awesome solo in the middle right? Honestly, you could put that on a Van Halen record and not tell the difference. It actually manages to surpass that Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone crap. But I digress. The Police influenced all sorts of great pop albums after their time. Their drummer pretty much outshines Van Halen too, if you want to go for technical skillz. He's a great jazz drummer. The other guy(don't remember his name, don't feel like looking), even did some collaborations with Q-Tip. I can't see Eddie Van Halen doing anything with a credible rapper. No real contest there. I even like Van Halen in a guilty pleasure sort of way, but there's no way that they're on *that* level. Oh yeah, reading that Q-Tip part reminds me; if you think that technique is all that matters, than I assume that all rap is crap right? That makes you even more narrow-minded than usual. Okay, I'm expecting that, but call this stuff crap because it wasn't technically proficient, and make the argument easy for me, and yes I know, they aren't related in anything but their tech prowess, or lack thereof, but that's what we're talking about right? Here you go: The Beatles, Marvin Gaye, Velvet Underground, The Pixies, Johnny Cash, alright this is boring, you get the point...

I meant I would never have considered Slayer to be anything remotely related to Christianity. I listen to them and all, but Jesus ain't the first thing that comes to mind...
