  1. That line should be burned into Rush Limbaugh's retinas. There's a HUGE difference between Hoover's policy of complete inaction by the government under the most extreme circumstances, and the modern conservatives of today. Saying that we don't want the country to be completely socialist seems to be enough to be labeled a crazy conservative nowadays.
  2. Well, there doesn't seem to be as many college basketball games, so I'll list some of them: Stanford vs. Washington State- The game that should have ended Stanford's streak Duke vs. Maryland- ACC Championship UAB vs. Washington- NCAA 1st round Oklahoma State vs. Saint Joseph's- Elite Eight Oklahoma State vs. Georgia Tech- Final Four Duke vs. Connecticut- Final Four
  3. I find just about everything I ever need to know on Google. You just have to know how to enter keywords that will be picked up on, and know how to scan through the results. This is where you actually get a little something out of all that wasted time looking at porn.
  4. That Mike Hart vote's fine, but it's not official unless you check the little "Other" box at the beginning.
  5. How the hell do you include Washington State in this list? They went 5-6 and they'd be in the Emerald Bowl if they didn't play their worst game of the season against Colorado, dropping about 10 passes and fumbling at least 7 or 8 times. They beat UCLA and New Mexico on the road, and certainly are a step above Kentucky and Vanderbilt. . Am I the only one who knows anything about the BCS? The computers are not allowed to take into account scoring margin in any fashion. The only things they look at are wins and losses, and the quality of opponents. If they knew about the points, Boise State would have dropped a lot for nearly losing to about four shitty teams.
  6. Cal's in the national championship. Auburn and Oklahoma are screwed out of BCS bowls. Simple as that.
  7. See, Ron Artest should've taken a lesson in responsibility from this guy. I bet that if he'd done that, David Stern wouldn't have had the heart to get that big serious face on, and Artest would have only missed about 40 games instead of the entire season. He'd still get to do his big record tour, and he could come back just in time for the stretch run.
  8. Pretty good sports day for me so far. First, I go watch the Grizzlies beat Northwestern St. 56-7. Now, I'm watching Clean Old-Fashioned Hate, and GT's making a comeback against Georgia, and checking scores, I see EWU even beat So. Illinois. If Tech makes it all the way back, I would be a happy camper.
  9. Oh, when it comes to boring basketball, Mike Fratello has absolutely nothing on Dick Bennett. Yeah, he took Wisconsin to the Final Four, and he's resuscitating the program at WSU, but sometimes I think is whole strategy is just to be slow and boring to piss the other team off. It seems like any player that shoots the ball before the shot clock is down to 15 is subject to an automatic three-game suspension. I really doubt anyone here follows Coug hoops well enough to know what I'm talking about, but we have this PG named Randy Green who's one of the most talented players on the team, but he's a little creative, and gets to the basket, and takes an open shot when he has it, so naturally, Dick Bennett hates him, and he only played a few minutes in the opener. Mike Fratello may have been good at boring basketball, but Dick Bennett treats it like the Word of God.
  10. Just my two cents, but I think that Isaac Newton has a stranglehold on the award. He discovered more of modern math and science himself than about everyone else in his century combined.
  11. Washington's still number one. He basically set the precedent for the whole world that democracy could work on a large scale, in everything from fighting the war for freedom, helping set up the country, getting it going as the first president, and then most importantly, giving up that power, to make sure that the power would transfer peacefully after the first democratic leader was elected. He refused to take dictatorial power when a group of citizens conspired to make sure that he would, and then finally refused to run for a third term, and admonished any future generations of leaders that would try such an act. If not for Washington, the majority of the world might still be run by constituitonal monarchies.
  12. Wow, Canada sucks even more than I thought it did. They can't even find 10 Canadians worthy of being on a top ten list. Don Cherry's weak as fuck, and now we find that three of the other ten aren't even really Canadian.
  13. I read the article, but I still don't get what exactly happened. Did they refuse to let any white reporters into the country or something?
  14. The way you summarized that article made it sound a lot worse than it actually was. The gist of the article was that the coaches shouldn't be able to influence a third of the BCS rankings when their votes aren't even made public. They have every reason to be terribly biased, and when Texas moves up on Cal as much as they did last week, it looks really suspicious. For the most part, I think all these "tweaks" to the BCS system that happen almost every year just make it worse. If we had a system where SOS was taken into account and the computer rankings could take into account margin of victory as long as there was some reasonable cap, we wouldn't be having most of these problems. Utah would be in, Boise would be out, Texas would need Cal to lose, and Auburn would probably end up passing Oklahoma. I agree with the writer that an eight team playoff is infinitely more reasonable than the current system, and the fact that the BCS actually keeps getting more and more screwed up is completely true.
  15. I was just thinking, how sad would it be if this thread is actually still going in 2008 when the election comes.
  16. I say... Barry Bonds! Sure he takes steroids, and acts like a total dick, but he does it in a funny way. The best thing is that he can tell every reporter in the locker room to fuck off and they'll still be back sucking his dick three hours later. He is to baseball what Eminem was to music before he sold out.
  17. I think the odds of Barry Bonds playing in something like this are about the same as the odds of Italy winning it all.
  18. Furman is also a darned solid AA team who has a good shot at winning the national title. We're not discussing a horrendous AA team here. -=Mike Yeah, I think Furman will definitely make it to the title game at least. In addition to their close call against Pittsburgh, they also beat Ga. Southern who played with Georgia for three quarters. The Grizzly fan in me wants to give UM a chance at taking at all, and I am going to their 1st round playoff game this week, while I'm home for Thanksgiving, but honestly, I'd say that Ga. Southern and Furman are probably the two best I-AA teams in the country.
  19. Mack Brown always plays the wrong quarterback. For years, Major Applewhite was better than Chris Simms. He'd come up huge in big games, (beating Nebraska for their only Big XII Title) whereas Simms would always choke when it mattered, throwing five picks just about every time he faced Oklahoma. Brown would always wait until the game was just out of reach to put Applewhite in, and he'd lead a huge comeback but fall just a few points short. If Brown would have played Applewhite the year that Nebraska got into the title game against Miami, the Longhorns could have won a national title. Now he's doing the same thing with Vince Young and Chance Mock. Young's okay when they're running the triple option to protect the lead, but he can't throw the ball to save his life, and unless he's playing a team that should move to the MAC like Kansas, he can't engineer a comeback. Every time they're in a situation to throw the ball, they really need to bring Mock in to give the Horns an opportunity to win the game. I mean with Cedric Benson as a major Heisman candidate, why do you need a quarterback to take a third of the carries anyway? I can't guarantee that Texas would have beaten OU with Mock, but it would have been a really close game, and the Horns would have put at least 14-17 points on the board. Only Jason White awkening from his slumber trailing in the 4th quarter could have gotten OU by Texas if Mack Brown would have played Mock.
  20. In the poll I did see on ESPN.com, 45% of the voters picked Peterson and no one else was over 20%, although that's probably more due to the fact that ESPN was hammering him as THE Heisman Winner for a while, than it is due to any real merit of deserving the award. I still don't see why JJ Arrington doesn't get more hype. He's got the best stats in the country, and his team's one play away from being in the national championship game. As for Smith, I'd say he almost certainly gets an invite. I remember Steve McNair was a finalist for the award when he was playing at I-AA Alcorn State.
  21. Here's my top five and why: 1. JJ Arrington: At 7.0 ypc, is leading the other major candidates at RB by a yard every time he touches the ball. Gets in the end zone, and hasn't had a bad game all year long. Could have put up ridiculous numbers if he didn't sit in the 4th quarter so often when Cal had huge leads. 2. Derrick Johnson: The real MVP of the Texas Longhorns, Johnson kept them in the Oklahoma game for three and a half quarters, but couldn't really do much with the offense scoring no points. The best defensive player in the country, Johnson has been every bit as valuable to his team as a 1800 yard RB. 3. Adrian Peterson: Peterson had absolutely monster games when it mattered going well over 200 yards against both Texas and Oklahoma State. Has put up great numbers yardage-wise all year, and is the best candidate from a national championship contender. Only his difficulty getting into the end zone keeps him from being the pick to win it. 4. Jason White: Probably the best QB in the country, White's put up another year of tremendous numbers. However, much like Leinart and Benson, it's hard to escape the feeling that he's only second best on his own team. Adrian Peterson absolutely carried the Sooners against Texas, while White turned in an abysmal performance going 14-26 for 113 yards with 0 TDs and 2 INTs. 5. Alex Smith: Forget the tremendous passing numbers. the fact that he's only 220 yards from being the Utes' leading rusher shows just how integral Smith is to the nation's most high-powered offense. Only the lack of competition and the two picks in the closest thing Utah had to a big late-season game keep him from rising any higher. And just for fun, here's my 6-10 with no why: 6. Cedric Benson 7. Reggie Bush 8. Jason Campbell 9. Matt Leinart 10. David Pollack
  22. When I see most of the polls on the internet, they only have five candidates, and they don't have the one that I'd pick listed. I figured I'd make a poll on here, and maybe a thread for a little Heisman discussion as well. I put the people who I see as the nine most legitimate candidates on the list, but if you are voting for an "other" pick, please tell us who you wanted to vote for. I added as many names as I could, but there are still many legitimate candidates out ther including Erasmus James, Braylon Edwards, David Greene, Aaron Rodgers, and David Pollack. Feel free to vote whoever you wish.
  23. OK, I've actually met Don Cherry, and I still think that the fact that he's on the list is utterly ridiculous. He was a hockey coach and broadcaster. That would be like people in the US voting John Madden as the greatest American of all-time. I don't really think Canada's done all that great politically, so I wouldn't give it to any of their shitty PMs either. Out of that list, I'd put Alexander Graham Bell first, Banting second and then Suzuki third. They at least accomplished something that's helpful to the greater world. However, unless Suzuki's the guy I'm thinking of that did something with AIDS or cancer, he gets knocked out too. If he's a glorified television personality, he's not on the list of the greates jack shit.
  24. Here's how I see the AFC: 1. Steelers (14-2) 2. Patriots (14-2) 3. Colts (12-4) 4. Chargers (11-5) 5. Broncos (11-5) 6. Jets (11-5) Yeah, it will probably be the first time ever that there were no 10-6 teams in one conference's playoffs, but that's how I see it. I see the Patriots dropping one to the Jets at the Meadowlands, and the Steelers maybe losing a freak game to the Giants or Bills. The Colts are still solid, the Chargers will beat the Broncos, and with the Jets not getting into the meat of their schedule until Pennington's 100%, they should all be able to get to 11-5. As for the playoff picks, I say the Colts and Broncos win, since the Colts are too good to lose to the Jets at home, and the Chargers won't be able to beat the Broncos twice in a row. Then, the Steelers and Patriots will whip those two teams in the divisional games, and the Patriots will dig down deep to the fact that they're actually better than the Steelers when motivated to win the AFC. I don't have all the schedules quite so handy for the NFC, so I won't break it down team-by-team, but I'm still sticking with my preseason picks. I say the Eagles will go 15-1 and get the 1 seed, and end up facing the Falcons in the NFC Championship. They'll be off to a 24-7 lead at halftime, before Donovan McNabb reverts to his real self, throwing three picks against the solid Falcons defense, as Atlanta goes on to a 35-34 win. Then, since the Falcons aren't actually an elite team like the Patriots, Steelers, or Eagles, they'll get killed in the Super Bowl, 38-14.
  25. I have to agree with Damaramu on this one. Texas is shitty and the fact that they're second in the Big XII makes the whole conference look bad. I mean look at last year. WSU was one of the most overrated teams in the country. (How's that for bias; I go there.) Yet a heavily favored Texas team still managed to lose to them in the Holiday Bowl. Meanwhile, this year Texas almost lost to Arkansas, and they'll probably lose to ASU or Cal in the Holiday Bowl too. The only difference I see is that the fact that Texas is second and that shitty isn't really a strike against Texas as much as it is an indictment on the entire conference. If the Longhorns were playing in the Pac-10, the SEC, or maybe even the ACC, there's no way that they would have been able to escape with one loss. The Big XII has a good non-conference record, but the best quality win that anyone in the conference has picked up is UCLA. I think we're going to see just how overrated the Big XII is come bowl season.
