Dahl didn't write the Phantom Tollbooth, and no, there is no BFG movie. -

So he got a kids name wrong, big deal. It happens. Ebert was right though. Depp was totally aping Michael Jackson here and Wonka was creepy as hell. He's supposed to be though, so it's okay. They totally got Violet's character totally wrong which was my big gripe of the movie. I didn't write that. -

The movie was not authentic like they claimed, as there were numerous differences between the book and the movie. The kids were "killed off" way too quickly and the subplot about Wonka's father was horrible, and nearly killed the movie for me. It was a good fun movie that I think people will like, but I still don't think the true Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been made. -
Amber Tamblyn gets nothing??? Joan of Arcadia only gets a Best Guest Actress nod? Bullshit
-
Which episode was this? What was it about(I suck with names)? I also hope Without A Trace gets some recognition but I'm fairly certain it won't outside of a sympathy nod for Lapaglia. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Malone v. Malone was submitted probably to get LaPaglia a nod. The other episode (the one with Dylan Baker) was probably to help Eric Close. I don't know why they submitted the abortion episode.

Last year Without a Trace submitted "Wannabe", the best episode well ever, and didn't get any big nominations. The people at the Emmy's can be clueless

They're obviously not going to come right out and refer to Hassan and Daivari as terrorists. But if you can't see the connections in what they did, then you're really stupid.

Direction for Hassan's Character on SmackDown
bob_barron replied to The Mandarin's topic in The WWE Folder
UPN should've cut it, but WWE shouldn't have the done angle in the first place. And if they ran the angle without the London bombing, there still would've some backlash. People were outraged before the attacks happened. -

I don't think that's what RRR meant. I think he meant that regardless of the London attacks or not, it's still a stupid angle. Is that right RRR? Yes, because pulling out will send a great message to the terrorists. That'd just be letting them win. No it's not. I read about the angle on Monday night and was disgusted then, saw pictures of it on Tuesday and thought it was stupid then too. If London hadn't happened, it still would've been an incredibly stupid angle to run. London just made it worse. The discussions probably wouldn't have been heated (and I think it was a horrible decision to close that thread IMO), but people would still be discussing it, because the London attacks or not- It still was a stupid and offensive angle to run, that shows how classless WWE is. -
They have that for the SAG Awards I think

AD requires more commitment then Seinfeld did, since each episode plays off every other episode and a lot of the gags work because people have seen the previous episodes.

Amber Tamblyn needs to be nominated for Best Actress again, since she's the best actress on TV. It'd be great if Without a Trace got a nod for Best Drama, but I saw the episodes they submitted for consideration, and they weren't the best ones. LaPaglia will probably get a Best Actor nod based on Malone v. Malone, even though I would've submitted The Juror and John Michael Malone. I'd like to see Joan get a nomination again this year, moreso as a fuck you to CBS, but all the backlash the show got for its rating drops will probably hurt it. And of course, Arrested Development deserves nominations for the show, Bateman and Arnett.

I became a huge basketball fan because of the lockout. It's going to be very hard for me to get back into it. I mean, a whole season was lost....for nothing!

The OAO Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Thread
bob_barron replied to SuperJerk's topic in Television & Film
To be fair, I'll freely admit to being really anal about the adaptation of the book, since Dahl is my favourite author and it's one of my favourite books. I like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory just fine, I just remember everytime I watch it, the changes from the book always really bothered me. But as I said, I'm really anal about stuff like that. Hearing that they're making a version that's supposed to be more faithful has excited me. -

Let me dispense with the obvious comparison immediately: this version is more faithful and substantive than Mel Stuart's foppish 1971 production, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Somehow - probably because many of my generation saw this year-after-year on television during our youths - that overrated motion picture has become a classic. Dahl hated it, and it's no wonder why: the edgy became genial, Willy Wonky was transformed into a father figure, and the Oompa Loompas sang lame songs (okay, so one or two of those tunes are catchy). In making this movie, Burton shoulders aside Stuart's film and returns to the source material. The result is faithful enough to have earned the Dahl family's seal of approval. Johnny Depp's portrayal of Wonka is creepy. This is the kind of man one wouldn't feel safe leaving a child alone with. Every once in a while, he says something unexpected. Consider, for example, his introduction to a chamber in his factory: "Everything in this room is edible. Even I'm edible. But that is called cannibalism, and it's frowned upon in most societies." Does Depp's Wonka recall Michael Jackson? Without question, and some of the mannerisms are so similar that it's impossible to believe it's a coincidence. Depp and Burton have said that the portrayal is based on Howard Hughes and Edward Scissorhands, and it's not hard to see those influences, as well. In fact, Burton pays explicit homage to his earlier movie in a scene in which Wonka is shown hefting a pair of large scissors to cut a ribbon. Young Freddie Highmore acquits himself admirably as Charlie, and what he accomplishes here may help to dispel the memory of Peter Ostrum's hideous acting in the same role more than three decades ago. This is Highmore's second consecutive outing opposite Depp - the two appeared in Finding Neverland. The supporting cast is filled out nicely. Helena Bonham Carter (Burton's current off-screen leading lady) and Noah Taylor play Charlie's parents. And veteran Irish character actor David Kelly is Grandpa Joe. Kelly has enjoyed a long and fruitful career, with recent international screen roles in films like Waking Ned Devine and The Matchmaker, but he may be best-known as the infamous Mr. O'Reilly from John Cleese's Fawlty Towers. The mixture of the gothic and the jaunty makes Charlie and the Chocolate Factory a sometimes topsy-turvy experience. In terms of how it works, it's not unlike Little Shop of Horrors, the musical comedy about murder, mayhem, and a giant Venus Fly Trap. There's a dark side to that movie's fun, as well. (Both films feature a shot from inside a mouth as a dentist performs a procedure.) By adding a subplot about Willy and his father, Burton gives his lead character and the story an added emotional component. It's hard to say what fans of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory will make of this movie - many of the basic elements are the same, but the "feel" is entirely different. Lovers of Dahl's book, however, will almost certainly appreciate what Burton has wrought. Excerpts from the ReelViews review. Apparently Mike Teevee is addicted to video games, when in the book it was Westerns. -

Charlie wasn't lucky though. I mean he was the only one who was greatful for the whole thing (notice in the book, all the kids constantly complain the whole time) because of his impoverished background. I mean Wonka shouldn't have had any doubt about Charlie considering all the crap he put up from the other kids, and how he didn't put up with any from Charlie. Squirrels>geese. I think this is in the movie, but I love Wonka's nonchalantness about the burning of the trash and how Veruca could be burned. I mean, awesome. They just seemed corny and tacked on to me. I mean, Willy Wonka doesn't sing! Expanding on Wonka's background does stupid and like a waste of time. I mean why can't we just accept Wonka for Wonka? -

I just remember watching it and noticing a lot had changed from the book. It was just too over the top, and I don't think they made Matilda as badass it could've been. I'd love to see them try and make Going Solo into a movie. It's my favourite book ever and it's about Dahl's experiences in World War II. That would be awesome if they could get it right. -

You didn't know it was a book????? Wow. Didn't Grandpa Joe come in and straighten Wonka out or something, either way it was a needless swerve that killed some of the movie. There's a reason it's not in the book. I hope we get to see the kids as they leave the factory, another great part of the book. I tried to find the book today, but couldn't. I did see Matilda though- they sure fucked that one up.
