    Dodgers/Athletics World Series: Game 3

I rented this game recently off Netflix. I thought I had pegged the Gibson walk-off, but this game certainly did not disappoint. A 2-1 victory highlighted by Mark McGwire's walk-off home run in the ninth. A few thoughts: -It surprises me somewhat that you rarely hear about this homer from McGwire, even during his playing days. You would think a player known for his home run exploits would have this one highlighted. -McGwire's home run game came three days after Gibson won game one with his own home run. This was the first time two batters hit walk-off home runs in the same series. The only other series to earn this distinction was the 2004 NLCS. -I will never, ever complain about too many pickoff throws again. Bob Welch threw over eight times after Steve Sax reached base to leadoff the game. The eighth inning was interminable, with the Athletics obsessed with neutralizing Lasorda's running attack. -Despite the throw overs, the constant threat of hit and runs, steals, etc. make this game very interesting. Broadcaster Vin Scully does an outstanding job of giving the relevant situation, letting the viewer know the potential strategy given the statistics and results of the season. Fox should watch Scully and NBC work games and take notes.

    Dodgers/Athletics World Series: Game 3

Korean Byung Hyun Kim. I blame Bob Brenly for the fiasco. Kim threw 61 pitches in Game Four, culminating with Derek Jeter's walkoff home run. Brenly brought back Kim the next night where he again blew a save thanks to Scott Brosius' home run. Kim did not actually surrender the game-winning hit in game five however. Alfonso Soriano won it with an RBI single off reliever Albie Lopez in the 12th inning.

Top 50 Stars of the Last 50 Years

The Rock 'n' Roll Express had the teenage girl dynamic. And as good as the Midnights were, none of them headlined a stadium show against Ric Flair like Morton did. If I were to select another team, it would actually be the Fabulous Kangaroos.

What the Yankees need to do is take guys like Shelley Duncan, Kei Igawa, etc. Plug them in and find out exactly what they can do. It should not be the end of the world if the Yankees miss the playoffs, though their fans will certainly think so.

HUGE sweep of Bored's Oaks. Leaves me six games up in my division with 27 games to go. Right now no other team is further ahead in the playoff chase, even Smues.

Czech, I knew where you were going with that even before I checked the link. There's a great Onion article waiting to be written.

Two quick comments about the All-Star balloting. -I really wish they would designate a center fielder, instead of just voting three outfielders. There's a clear difference in the ability needed at all three positions. -There's no reason not to let fans designate a starting pitcher along with the rest of the lineup.

Review: WWE Royal Rumble 2008, from New York City; 1/27/2008.

Undertaker actually threw Holly over the top rope at one point, that got ignored by the referees.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...sp&c_id=mlb John Smoltz thinks his starting days are over, though he can still pitch out of the bullpen. I'd love to see Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux all retire after this season and go into the Hall of Fame the same year.

Roster expansion is September 1, that's hardly an obscure fact. If there was no scheduled game, the game would need to be replayed in its entirety, unless it were not necessary to determine a playoff entrant.

The sports coverage and announcing thread

Today on XM Radio, Kevin Kennedy extolled Joba Chamberlain's virtues in the bullpen by mentioning that the Yankees are 25-4 when Joba pitches. Great stat, right? Chamberlain only pitches when his team is winning in the first place! Of those 29 games, Joba came in with the lead 22 times. Only twice has Chamberlain entered a game with his team trailing, and just five tie games. Of course the Yankees are going to win when he pitches.

Yes. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/y2008/off...ending_game.pdf I can't cut and paste text, but check the top of page 42 and the previous page. They cover that situation specifically. Teams could abuse the rules or take advantage, but it probably is not worth the effort.

With the game suspended, they will almost certainly need to pick it up in Baltimore, as the O's don't come to Chicago again the rest of the season. That should be a fun quasi-doubleheader. How do you handle a suspended game that isn't resumed for weeks, namely, roster changes? Basically you can use any new player in the game, you only can not use a player already substituted for. If a player in the game is off your team, you simply use a substitute in his place. The MLB rulebook is pretty clear in the rule that if possible, this game should be made up prior to the next White Sox/O's game in Camden Yards.

Here's a pet peeve. The Mets/Pirates game in Shea was rained out. Rather than make it up the next two days the Bucs are in town, the Pirates must return on August 11th on what would have been an off day for both clubs. Honestly, are you really going to pull in that big a gate against a last place team on a Monday? Just play the damn doubleheader.
