The worst combined performance is almost certainly the Orioles and Dodgers in 1966. The Orioles hit 200/267/342 and SWEPT the Dodgers, who hit 142/226/192. The Dodgers' Maury Wills stole the only base of the series. The O's outscored the Dodgers 13-2 over four games.

They hit .183 as a team. This is interesting. The '96 Yankees hit .216 in their World Series. Bad hitting performances are entirely common. It's a short series.

I remember reading somewhere that run scoring has averaged about a run less per game than the regular season. I'll try and run some more numbers and get a firm result.

I think most general managers have stories about pitchers who got away. Billy Beane traded Jeremy Bonderman. Brian Sabean traded Francisco Liriano. Gerry Hunsiker couldn't find a spot for Johan Santana on his 40 man roster. It's notoriously hard to predict pitcher performance.

Pine tar is used to get a better grip. Pine tar is allowed on a baseball bat to a certain extent (18" in some direction). The infamous Pine Tar home run by George Brett was simply Billy Martin trying to get an edge by exploiting a technicality. Rogers would use pine tar to grip the ball better. You wouldn't really use it to doctor the baseball because it's dark and noticable. You would rather use something like vaseline. If you did use pine tar on the ball, the purpose would be to create more break on a pitched ball.

I don't like the wild card because it cuts into the divisional races, and as one thread revealed, it really hasn't given us a truly classic first round playoff matchup. Instead of watching the Yankees win the East by one game and a winner take all playoff between San Diego and Los Angeles, we got two sweeps and two mostly uncompetitive series. I don't hate Bud as long as I keep things in perspective. He's the owners' represenative, and nothing else. I am truly happy that there will be no extracted labor negotiation.

If nothing else, this has already been the most competitive World Series since 2003.
