It's on page five. -
http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/ Baseball-reference.com has a new leaderboard showing batting/pitching leaders at each age, as well as before and after that age. For example, Andres Galarraga actually ranks 10th all-time in Home Runs hit after age 30. Rickey Henderson ranks 1st in both stolen bases before age 30, and 1st in stolen bases after age 30. No other player appears in both top ten lists. Bert Blyleven is 4th all time in strikeouts up to the age of 23, and the only post 1900 pitcher ahead of Blyleven is Bob Feller. Barry Bonds' age 39 season last year was the best ever for a 39 year old. The top 5 players in adjusted OPS+ at 39 are Bonds, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, and Edgar Martinez. Hank Aaron is noted for his late career home run surge. But baseball's best home run hitter after 40 was Carlton Fisk, who hit 72. Following Fisk on that list are Darrell Evans, Dave Winfield, Carl Yastrzemski, and Stan Musial. http://www.baseball-ref.com/friv/multifranchise.shtml Find the 194 players who played for both the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, or any two teams. The site also added Silver Slugger winners.

Of course, there's the minor detail that arena attendance increased with the moves South.

He stated before that he doesn't have net access from 6-2. I've already forwarded my pick to Flik. -
In a perfect world, yes. But the Baseball Writers have continuously shafted deserving players. They are unable to see greatness beyond big time hitters, or pitchers with gaudy win/loss percentages. It is absolutely criminal that Bert Blyleven is not in the Hall. If you left the voting to a group of baseball scholars, I'd be comfortable with a once and done voting system. But otherwise, I just can't see it.

Whatever you do, pay no attention to Spring Training pitching performances, especially this early. I would like to say that having XM Radio is a godsend. I was able to listen to my first Phillies game since October.

Basically I'm going to look for similar players, and assess their statistics from there, value-wise. I have the 1993 MacMillan Encyclopedia at my disposal, which carries limited statistics for Negro League players.
-
A few guidelines... 1. Each team's roster will consist of 40 players, 25 of whom will consist the active roster. Teams must carry a total of 15 pitchers on their 40 man roster. Otherwise, players can form their teams however they choose, provided they can place a lineup on the field. 2. All players who played at least one game in MLB are eligible. In addition, negro league players inducted to Baseball's Hall of Fame are eligible. Due to a potential conflict of interest when computing negro league rankings, I will not draft those players. Also, keep in mind that I will make adjustments to their raw stats. a. If you want to be cute and draft Eddie Gaedel, be forewarned. The simulation attaches weights to players who played less than a certain number of at bats in a given season. b. See below for a list of eligible negro league players. 3. Draft order will be random, and the draft will follow a serpentine format. For the first fifteen rounds, we will select one player at a time. Rounds 16-25 will see two selections at a time, and rounds 26-40 will see three selections at a time. This is necessary to ensure the draft ends this year. 4. Draft order will be determined via a Random Number Generator. Here is a list of eligible negro league players. Satchel Paige, Monte Irvin, and a handful of others did play in the majors, so be aware of those guys. Bill James included these players in a top 100 list of baseball players he ranked in the New Historical Abstract. He also ran a top ten at each position, and if a player did not make the top 100 overall, his rank among his fellow negro leaguers at his position is listed. LF Turkey Stearnes (25th) CF Cool Papa Bell (76th) CF Oscar Charleston (4th) 3B Ray Dandridge (1st among Negro Leaguers) P Leon Day RF Martin Dihigo (95th) P Bill Foster P Rube Foster C Josh Gibson (9th) 3B Judy Johnson (2nd among Negro Leaguers 1B Buck Leonard (65th) SS Pop Lloyd (27th) P Bullet Rogan P Hilton Smith SS Willie Wells (86th) P Smokey Joe Williams (52nd) P Satchel Paige (17th) If anyone has any questions, or if there is anything I missed, please let me know. We will kick this thing off hopefully on Saturday.

"It's soooooo reeallll!" -
By my count, I've got 19 teams. That leaves room for one more.

That's a good point. Syndicate ownership has never benefited sports, and it nearly killed baseball in the 1890s. It'd be nice to see a change in ownership, but this has obvious drawbacks.
-
They gave him the game in 1980. The White Sox wanted to give him a game in 1990, but Commissioner Fay Vincent put the brakes on the idea.

Are you kidding? The Iron Sheik finally made it Backstage from his WM XVII battle royal win just yesterday.

I don't think its a matter of the college kids playing their hearts out. 90% of these early exhibition games are won by the pro teams. Looking at this game in particular, I am unable to find a complete box score. But from what I gathered, the Miami Hurricanes scored a few runs on defensive miscues. The random nature of baseball gives lesser teams the chance to score upsets. On top of that, pitchers can be rusty their first few times out. Spring Training stats are essentially meaningless when evaluating players. Plus, most managers are more concerned with distributing playing time than with winning the ballgame.
-
I would love to open it to all players. However, the problem is that it is much to easy for me to select some obscure negro league player and declare he was on the level of Carl Yastrzemski when I enter his stats. My compromise: Negro League players who are in the Hall of Fame are eligible.

It's free. So far we've got 12 people signed up, myself included. A few details. The draft will be held offline, likely here. Since its a computer sim league, we do not have a definate time-table we need to adhere to. You can select any MLB franchise for your team name, or a popular AAA (i.e. Durham Bulls) or negro league team. Your team name does not effect your roster in any manner. Rosters will be 25 man, with probably a 40 man roster to account for injuries. The only positional requirements are that you must field a real team. You can draft 8 outfielders and play Ty Cobb at shortstop if you like, but be prepared to deal with the positional consquences.

If Verne shows up for his pick, then HarleyQuinn would be up for the first pick, I believe. -
Ok guys. I'm looking to run a mock draft, covering every player in baseball history. After the draft, I would input the rosters into OOTP 6, and sim the season. So far I've got eight players from NMB. Anyone interested?

You guys seriously don't know who Wendi Richter was?

Nothing up my sleeves besides solid drafting boys. -
Which Cordero? Chad and Francisco are both closers.
-
Is it normal for college and pro teams to play one another? And is it normal for the college team to win!? College teams have been playing ball for a month now, while major leaguers haven't played since September/October. Remember, these are not serious games by any means.

The "committee" is actually all of the former Hall of Famers. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article...t=.jsp&c_id=mlb I don't think Jane Clark has any real association with baseball. Rather, she's the leader of the Trust that governs the Hall of Fame. It is hard to pinpoint the problem, but I am reasonably sure the format is flawed, and will not result in anyone being elected. A poster at Baseball Think Factory pointed out that the average ballot contained six names, more than the Baseball Writers usually select. The BBWAA ballot this year held 27 names, 11 of whom had realistic HOF arguments. The Veterans' Committee ballot held 25 names, about 19 of whom have reasonable cases. When you have that many qualified candidates, it is hard to get a group of 80, voting blindly from one another, to come to any kind of consensus. Is this a good thing for the Hall? No, for two reasons. One, there are several overly qualified candidates on this ballot who deserve induction. Ron Santo was one of the five best third basemen of all time, before Schmidt, Boggs and Brett played. Second, a lack of inductions equals a lack of interest in the Hall. The Hall suffers during lapses of activity. Over 65% of the current Hall of Famers DID vote for Ron Santo, and that is to their credit. Now the Hall needs to re-organize, and develop a better format.
