The Dames 0 Report post Posted October 19, 2002 I saw The Ring tonight and after initial trepidation from the previews, I was DELIGHTED that the movie was 100 times better than I thought it would be. It is a VERY creepy film and I recommend it to anyone into horror or suspense. Don't have much else to say except there are now three little girls that scare the shit out of me. The Exorcist, Angela from Sleepaway Camp 1 and the girl from The Ring. Dames

Guest HBK16 Report post Posted October 19, 2002 The Ring is an awesome movie. I don't blame you for wanting to turn the lights off. The well part was the worse for me.
Guest NaturalBornThriller4:20 Report post Posted October 19, 2002 This Movie is like another version of "Fear Dot Com" But since I enjoy a good scare, maybe i'll shell out $10 to see this.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted October 19, 2002 This Movie is like another version of "Fear Dot Com" Considering that Fear Dot Com was an awful and blatant rip-off of the Japanese version of the movie, Ringu, which came out a few years back, I can see why you'd think so... I'll be seeing The Ring the first weekend it's up at Zeotrope, which is a local theater that charges $4 a movie instead of the $9 that Hoyts charges. Plus, Zeotrope is just up the street from my house, and Hoyts is another town over.

Fear Dot Com also rips off Horrorvision. Just saying... I'll probably check The Ring out; at first I was mad because it was a remake and new remakes are usually totally unnecessary and not good at all. Then I saw the first previews and it looked pretty interesting, but the recent TV spots they've been showing make it look bad, but the reviews I've read so far say its pretty good. So... I guess I'll check it out, although I'd still rather see Ringu.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted October 19, 2002 I don't see the problem with the previews. I thought they all made the movie look good and actually "scary".
Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted October 20, 2002 It was totally scary. And the fact that my parents are gonna be in columbia (missouri) and I'll in all likelyhood be alone in the house exactly seven days after I watched the movie doesn't help much. ***Spoiler warning*** The worst parts (scare-wise) for me were at the very beggining when the girl opened the door and saw the screen, when the mom said 'I saw her face' and it showed her face (I figured it'd just be her regular face only, you know, scared and dead. But THAT was totally fucked up), and when her son gets that 'what the fuck did you do?' look on his face when she said that they 'set her free', cause I knew something was gonna happen. I don't see how the well part was scary. I mean, anticipation-wise, totally. But once it was actually into it it seemed like they were going to do a Haunting-type 'They set the spirit free, now it can be laid to rest, we won't die and everyone will live hapily' type of ending, and I was really glad that they didn't. "You weren't supposed to let her out...". Best. Line. in the moive.

Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted October 20, 2002 Ok, I'm starting to be legit freaked. I'm already VERY paranoid and all that, and even the idea that for some reason I'm gonna die of fright in seven days....*shudder*. I'm twitching and constantly looking over my shoulder for real. Don't take this as my being easily scared or anything like that, because I'm not easily scared, but I AM easily unnerved, and again am naturally, borderline have a condition paranoid. Don't take this to mean that the Ring is the scaries thing since being thrown off a cliff or something, I'm just trying to get stuff out, because I'm at the point by now that if someone came up behind me and said 'hello' something without me seeing them I could very well....I have no idea, feel free to ignore this post, in fact, just move along... Guest Vyce Report post Posted October 20, 2002 Well, it was pretty good. Even though I detest remakes (and yes, it struck me as a remake, not an adaptation of the book). Even though I still prefer the Japanese version, and think that Ringu is the overall better film. But trust me, this movie is probably as good a horror flick as you're going to get this side of the ocean.
Guest C.H.U.D. Report post Posted October 20, 2002 Being one of the few people here who have seen the original Ringu, I absolutely loved this film. I actually liked it more than the Japanese version, because they made the story tighter, took out some complications that weren't needed and got rid of the stupid "everyone has ESP" theory. I didn't find it "scary" since I knew everything that was going to happen, but it did have some good suspense and built a nice level of dread. Btw, the horse scene on the boat freaked me out. I don't know why, but it's one of the most disturbing scenes I've ever seen. This film will probably make my top 10 list for the year.
Guest kkktookmybabyaway Report post Posted October 20, 2002 I'm such a scrooge. I saw it Friday and didn't really care too much for it. However, my better half, who wanted to see this, jumped several times while I laughed. SPOILERS AND STUFF!!! With that being said, I did like the "Why did you set her free?" bit. I got a laugh out of that. Usually I can understand movies, but there are way too many questions I had after the film. For example, at the very end why do they have to show the tape they were making to another person? BTW: The highlight of the film came when that chick came out of the TV and a guy with his LITTLE KID walked out. Why would you take a kid who looked to be 7-8ish to a film like this?!?! I bet that little tyke slept well that night...

Dames I would have gone to the one on the 30th too, except that they're showing Ringu 2 on the 26th & 27th, and Ringu 0 on the 27th & 30th. So I'll probably hit the Walter Reade Theatre on the 26th to see the first two, then see the prequel on Wednesday. Too bad these aren't out on R1 DVD. Guest Vyce Report post Posted October 20, 2002 For example, at the very end why do they have to show the tape they were making to another person? SPOILER***** Because that's the trick to breaking the curse. You have to show a copy of the tape to someone else within the one week time limit. Otherwise you're toast. It's like one of those really annoying chain letters, only in this case you WILL die if you don't follow through.

Since the American version of The Ring was basically a carbon copy of Ringu, I don't want to go into seeing the American sequels (which I'm sure there will be) knowing everything. It ruins the fun. Guest El Satanico Report post Posted October 20, 2002 Too bad these aren't out on R1 DVD. They do have them on a All Regions DVD. Well i know they have the original, but I'm not sure about the sequels. Well nevermind i just checked the site i was going to buy it from and it doesn't have english subtitles. Good thing i saw that before i ordered it.

Dames So much for my clever plans. Well, I went to the WRT box office and picked up my ticket for the 30th (it's cheaper than a regular movie, thanks to my student ID). I guess I'll wait to see the sequel and the prequel some other time.

Now this may be just me, but if I was ever thrown down a well and forced to haunt nimrods who watched some tape, wouldn't I want these people alive if I wanted my "legacy" to be spread around? Instead of killing the person, I'd just go through the TV and say "Hey, you better show some copies of this or you'll be in big trouble, mister." I don't know -- that just seems more effective than just out-and-out killing all those who see a product I want to be spread across. What's the sequel to this film? "The Ring II -- putting the 'special' into 'special edition DVD'. Or how about haunting P2P file-sharers? It could be revealed that the ghost-chick was a mercenary from the RIAA hoping to crack down on file sharers?...
Guest Ravenbomb Report post Posted October 21, 2002 in The Ring 2 she haunts pro wrestling, and leaps out of tapes that've been procured via online tape trader. They stop her once and for all by putting a glass ceiling over the well after Jeff Hardy tries to sacrafice himself by doing a swanton onto her corpse. in The Ring 3 she kills transvestites with sticks.
