Guest Evil Ash Report post Posted October 25, 2002 I was just watchin' some ol' UWF Midsouth action. Man, what a roster? Gentleman Chris Adams, the Freebirds, Ted Dibiase, Steve Williams, Chavo Guerrero, Terry Taylor, Jim Duggan when he was decent... But man, what a lot of run-ins! It's like late 90s WWF! And every main event ran out of time! Anyone else seen some UWF stuff? Anyone know some matches that were given a decent amount of time, and didn't have any sort of screwy endings? Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted October 26, 2002 I loved Mid South when I was first able to see it on WTBS in 1985. TBS would show an hour of NWA and an hour of Mid South back to back on Sunday night. Jake Roberts came out for 3 or 4 weeks straight demanding a shot at Terry Taylor's TV title and eventually attacked him and DDT'd him onto either a chair or the title belt.It was the first time I remember seeing blood on a televised wrestling show.Taylor was face down and this pool of blood formed under his head on the mat. Brawls were the MS specialty. They had a pretty good locker room clearing brawl between Duggan and One Man Gang that saw Duggan leave the ring to get a chair, come back and just starting hitting everyone he could swing at. The ring cleared and Duggan eventually sat down on the chair in the middle of the ring beckoning OMG to come back. And Jim Ross calling the action. It was a great promotion
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted October 27, 2002 It's funny how everyone always talks about ECW influencing the WWF (and to a lesser extent, WCW) but no one ever talks about how much Mid-South and World Class influenced ECW. Wild bloody brawls, tag matches that go all over the arena, etc. I liked it when Gordy won the UWF Title because OMG beat the snot out of Jim Duggan before the tournament finals, so Duggan wasn't able to defend himself and was easy prey for Gordy. Booking like that is what the WWE is missing now ... but why do that when you can just have a run-in at the end of EVERY title match?!? The NWA really dropped the ball by not doing an invasion angle when they bought the UWF. If they had a few of their bigger names turn on the NWA and join the UWF side, it could made some real money for the NWA. But instead, they just jobbed most of the UWF talent (how does Terry Taylor vs. Nikita Koloff to merge the TV belts seem like a fair matchup?)
Guest Slingshot Suplex Report post Posted October 27, 2002 Is it all about egos? McMahon had a sure fire winning angle if they had just made the Alliance look like a serious threat and did Crockett not do a promotional feud partially because it would have made the UWF look a little too equalish to the NWA? Wild bloody brawls, tag matches that go all over the arena, etc. You're right, but it's probably because they didn't get to see Mid South and World Class back east. That's just what I'm assuming anyway.
Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted November 6, 2002 I'm from Boston, and I got to watch both shows ... WCCW had the syndication on ESPN, and I used to watch from 3-4 every day after school (it might have been 4-5, it's been a long time since then). Mid-South/UWF were on either the superstation or wnds, which is a local shit-station out of new hampshire. It was on for like one or two hours a week. In terms of the best years, I'd say 84-86 for either show. By 1986, most of the bigger names had moved on to the NWA or WWF, so the rosters got a bit weak. (Iceman Parsons in a feud for the title?!?) Hasbeen1 0 Report post Posted September 4, 2006 I looked up MidSouth so I wouldn't just be starting a new thread and found this one even though it's old. I watch a MidSouth tape today, around 4 hour of it with 2 to go. Totally enjoyed it. Looked to be around 1982, I can look up the matches/feuds and find that. Ted DiBiase was on it more than anyone, as a face then as a heel. Enjoyed him as both. Good, intense interviews too. Other talent included Jake Roberts, Hacksaw Duggan, Dusty, Orndorff (I'm not putting out a bounty on DiBiase, it's a reward), Andre, Bob Orton Jr, the Freebirds, Butch Reed, Bob Roop, Tully Blanchard, the Iron Sheik, Kerry Von Erich, lots more. Biggest pops went to the Junkyard Dog, if you've not seen his old matches you wouldn't believe how the crowd went crazy, whether it was in a studio or an arena. Duggan started in MS as a heel, I didn't remember that until seeing it. Strangest thing after seeing the wrestlers age over the years was how thin many of them were, how they could move in there. Neidhart, Duggan, Roberts, Gordy, JYD could all fly around the ring. Even the Iron Sheik was in good shape. Roberts had short trunks, I'd never seen them on him. Probably weighed only 190-200 pounds at a legit 6'3 or 6'4. Good angles, good action, commentary by Bill Watts (such as that Jap manager got what was coming to him, very PC). Thought the fans would lynch Michael Hayes after the JYD was "blinded" after one match. Just good stuff all around, even the squashes served their purpose. cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2006 I'd say old school Memphis stuff influenced ECW more than anyone. The main difference between places like the USWA, World Class, Mid South and ECW was that ECW packaged it as a hip "this is the new style" promotion. I remember last year during the initial One Night Stand build when Bischoff ragged on ECW, saying they ripped off a lot of WCW ideas. It sounded ludicrous at first, but if you take a look at early 90s WCW it was a very violent promotion. Stuff like the Wargames matches, Cactus Jack doing Falls Count Anywhere, Sting and Vader trying to kill each other, etc.

Timmy8271 0 Report post Posted September 6, 2006 Mid-south was just awesome because Bill watts was so crazy. He would go off on Vince Mcmahon for no reason. My favorite Mid-south angle is Eddie Gilbert and Dick Murdoch destroying Dr. Death and Jim Ross and Magunm TA selling it like Doc is dying. Then the next week they do it to Dusty Rhodes. BruiserKC 0 Report post Posted September 6, 2006 I was a big UWF/Mid-South fan back in the day. People talk about the rabid ECW fanbase...the UWF fans were pretty crazy in their own right. One of my fave stories from back then...when they would hold their supershows at the Superdome in New Orleans, General Skandor Akbar was the most hated man in the promotion. Before one show, the NO police showed up at his hotel room and informed him there were some threats on his life. THey gave Akbar one of their bulletproof vests and inform him he's not going on without wearing it as they can't guarantee his safety. Now THAT'S heel heat! Hasbeen1 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2006 Look for the Lawler vs Austin Idol hair match in the cage from the 80s. The cage surrounds the ring area, so Tommy Rich comes out from under the ring, still inside the cage and helps Idol beat Lawler, spike piledriver doubleteam, "post" him on the ring post. A fan tries to go over the cage and they know they're in trouble. Paul Heyman (Paul E Dangerously) was the heel manager...I love the expression on Idol, Rich, Heyman and the barber's faces when they get out of the cage-It's "how in the hell are we getting out of here." There was some trouble in the aisle and they have to sprint to get to the back. Now that was heel heat. I believe Idol had told the fans he'd refund all their money if he'd lost, so I guess they were mad about that too.
BruiserKC 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2006 I have a tape of that match...in fact Idol did offer to refund everyone's money at the Mid-South Coliseum if he lost. Watts' booking of Mid-South at that time was very gritty but he was able to make wrestlers into great heels or faces. The One Man Gang was a reputable UWF World champ...he clearly played the part of a monster heel.

Guest East.Coast.J Report post Posted September 25, 2006 Heres the link to an ebay auction http://cgi.ebay.com/UWF-Wrestling-lot-of-5...1QQcmdZViewItem they have five UWF tapes for sale -Wrestling Greatest Champs, The Lumberjack Match, Best of Mr. Wonderful, Steel Cage Match, Tag Team Tandems there is about five days left in the auction and no one has made a bid yet and I want to help these guys out.I'd bid but I have just got a Chikara DVD off Ebay so I don't have any ebay money right now so hopefully some of you can bid on these as they seem like good tapes and are extremly Rare Tape Traders. This is the terrible Herb Abrams incarnation of the UWF, which was a completely different company.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted September 25, 2006 The Rock-n-Roll Express beat The Road Warriors, The Dirty White Boys, and The Freebirds (Gordy & Roberts) in a "four corners" match. It's pretty cool that there was a 4-corners match in the mid-80s. You normally associate that with the mid-90s, or even more recent. Terry Taylor pinned Buddy Roberts in a "barbed wire cage" match. Steve Williams pinned Michael Hayes in a "steel cage" match. The final two matches were held simultaneously. The first wrestler to score a win (Taylor) was allowed to enter the other cage and help his friend. That's a pretty cool stipulation. I'd like to see someone pilfer that idea and use it now. And it's surprising that the faces won the 1st match - and thus the chance to have a 2-on-1.
Hasbeen1 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2006 I thought it was interesting the dome crowds went way downhill after the NWA/Crockett takeover. Leading up to that, the WWF took the likes of Junkyard Dog, Butch Reed, DiBiase, Jake Roberts, Hacksaw Duggan even One Man Gang, so maybe they just had no choice to sell. Watts did miss out on a huge push for Sting, so give Dusty or whoever made that call in the NWA some credit. I wish and hope they considered a merger with World Class, having a TX-LA base would have made sense but maybe Fritz and Watts could have never worked it out. Kerry, etc, did work a lot of old midsouth dates. Without looking it all up, I thinka roster with Steve Williams, the Von Erichs (if able and available), Chris Adams, Freebirds, Terry Taylor, Rick Rude (maybe could have stopped a move to NWA), young guys like "Dingo" (Ultimate) Warrior, Simpsons, Bigelow, and a ESPN slot, could have let them last several more years. Well I certainly hope that these tapes are still at least decent since I'm the one that bought them (I'm having them shipped from my inlaws in the US so I can see them)
Guest East.Coast.J Report post Posted September 29, 2006 They are interesting if you are the type of person who wonders what bad wrestling would look like on the floor of a half empty casino. The tapes aren't THAT bad. If you don't have too high of expectations going on, you might have some fun watching them.
Bruce Blank 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 Doesn't hurt that I'm a fan of a lot of the names mentioned on the tapes, old school all the way
