Guest Respect The 'Taker Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 Just when you thought it was safe...ANOTHER 'who's the best at what' poll has emerged... Shoot me for being curious, however I'm very interested in the bands you think personify rock n' roll and are the best at what they do. Since i refuse to acknowledge anything recent as qualifying for a chance to be labelled the 'greatest rock band of all time', i've gone old school and dug up some true greats by which modern music has been structured. The Stones have forever referred to themselves as the greatest ever, I personally agree, however i cannot speak for the masses... So let the masses speak for themselves Illusion
Guest Anglesault Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 Hey, where is Aerosmith? I don't think the newer stuff should DQ the older stuff.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 Def Leppard, AC/DC, and Deep Purple shouldn't be on there. The Beatles rule all, but if you're looking for something harder and rawer and consistency isn't the issue (as the Stones and Petty names would have to be dropped if they were), it's gotta be the Who or the Clash. I'm still marking Other, though.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 It's hard to go against The Stones.
Guest Respect The 'Taker Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 I didn't know about calling the Beatles a 'rock' band...spose Get Back pretty much shoots down that argument.. Illusion
Guest spiny norman Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 Yeah, I would consider The Beatles a class of their own. I'm going Other, and it's a tied vote between Queen and Dire Straits. I would've replaced Deep Purple and Def Leppard for those two, myself? Also, I would've had Pink Floyd on the list. But that's enough of my nit-picking.
Guest redbaron51 Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 The Who=What Rock 'N' Roll should be.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 Yeah, I would consider The Beatles a class of their own. I like to think of The Beatles as the original boy band. Think about it you had the funny one, the cute one, the quiet one, and the serious one. Ringo, Paul, George, and John. They played music that was as bubblegum pop as it gets to millions and millions of screaming teenage girls. Granted, they changed with Rubber Soul, but they are the inspiration for EVERY by band out there today. There's always the funnyone, the cute one, the bad boy, etc.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 My vote goes to early Sabbath. Aside from that, it's Pink Floyd all the way, or maybe Rush.

Granted, they changed with Rubber Soul, but they are the inspiration for EVERY by band out there today. There's always the funnyone, the cute one, the bad boy, etc. but they weren't premanufactured by a record company, they started out as a garage band. there wasn't really "the funny one," cause they all told jokes to the press. they weren't given specific stereotypical roles to fill by their manager epstein, it was just their natural personalities coming through. the beatles fucked around with the press all the time & didn't really care, no self-respecting boy band would ever say or do anything that wasn't calculated. the beatles didn't like doing the teenybopper thing at all, & eventually they just stopped it altogether & did a complete 180. and the sound may seem bubblegum now, but go back & listen to the albums, not just the singles. there's some damn good rock songs. witness 'money', 'you can't do that', and especially 'long tall sally' & 'i'm down'. i know they served as the INSPIRATION for every boy band (notably the monkees, which i consider the original boy band), but that doesn't make them a true boy band.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 Well, I've been put in my place. **cries** I'll definitely go back and listen to their stuff again though. Now that I think about, The Monkees WERE the original boy band. At least Nesmith's mom invented white-out, so there's something cool about that family.
Guest Sassquatch Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 I was torn between choosing either Stones and Sabbath. I went with Ozzy and the boys.
Guest Anglesault Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 The Beatles also played instruments.
Guest saturnmark4life Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 Thin Lizzy are an overlooked REAL rock n roll band, from the list it's close between The Who, AC/DC and Sabbath. Def Leppard should be removed, cos y'know, they're brutally horrible n all.
Guest godthedog Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 yeah, what's up with illusion including def leppard and deep purple on the poll but leaving out the damn beatles? and what's up with illusion creating a poll in the first place without mentioning la parka? he was robbed! ROBBED!
Guest Incandenza Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 This poll is horribly skewed. I marked other, and went with the Velvet Underground.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 I just noticed that there's no Ramones on the list. A travesty, a travesty I tell you. saturnmark, your liking of Thin Lizzy makes you instantly cool.

More than 3/4 of my C-D collection is metal. The other C-D's are The Beatles.

Guest Respect The 'Taker Posted November 30, 2002 Report Posted November 30, 2002 yeah, what's up with illusion including def leppard and deep purple on the poll but leaving out the damn beatles? Nimrods, all of you. The names there are just SUGGESTIONS, i put the 'Other' option there for a reason, you know. Besides, i thought Def Leppard had this huge cult following or something? Eh, am i outta touch or what. Illusion - Stoned and rolling
Guest saturnmark4life Posted November 30, 2002 Report Posted November 30, 2002 yeah sorry, a tad out of touch, though i was under the assumption that everyone knew def leppard had always sucked shit out of a monkey's ass (though that at least would be entertaining) fun fact - saturnmark has the same hometown as def fucking leppard, and they switch on our christmas lights most of the time, fuckng cocksuckers...
Metal Ed Posted November 30, 2002 Report Posted November 30, 2002 yeah sorry, a tad out of touch, though i was under the assumption that everyone knew def leppard had always sucked shit out of a monkey's ass (though that at least would be entertaining) fun fact - saturnmark has the same hometown as def fucking leppard, and they switch on our christmas lights most of the time, fuckng cocksuckers... Shit, dude. I am so gonna crack your skull. What I don't understand is how could anyone not dig the Leppard? That fuckin guitar just goin "vrom vrom srronnnk" and the singer goin all like "you're bringin on the heartache!" and the one-armed drum dude goin all like "boom boom bum boom" and it's just fucking bitchin, man. I listen to that shit every mornin when I'm combing my hair in my Def Leppard mirror. I can't get enough of it.
Guest Respect The 'Taker Posted November 30, 2002 Report Posted November 30, 2002 i was under the assumption that everyone knew def leppard had always sucked shit out of a monkey's ass (though that at least would be entertaining) Ouch, there's a music critic in you yet.. Illusion

But, shit, Metal Ed's fucked fatter chicks than that...I ain't one to judge on looks and shit, unless someone's like dog fuckin ugly.

What i did was go to AllMusic.com and just request a list for some old school rock bands. THAT was the list that was given back to me. There were actually a few others in there, however i just stuck the first ten off the list in as well as an 'other' option for the masses to implement their own opinions. However it DOES annoy me when people scream "WHY THE FUCK ISNT MY BAND IN THIS FUCKING POLL! FUCK YOU! I HATE YOU! GNR SUCK! I ROOT MY OWN PARENTS!" Well...you get the idea.
