Well, somebody in the "Wrestler of The Year" Thread suggested a branch-off and a big poll with all categories in it. Ask and ye shall recieve. If I'm forgetting one or two, just tell me and I'll add it in. Keep in mind this is WWE only, I'm sure the General Wrestling folder will have an overall post coming up soon too.

 

Wrestler of the Year (Male) : Eddy Guerrero. As somebody in the WOTY thread stated, nobody busted their ass more in this company this year to make every opponent he had look like a God this year. Not to mention him carrying RVD and The Rock to some of their best matches in recent memory, saving Smackdown by jumping with Benoit and helping the world realize how fuckin great his nephew Chavo is.

 

Runners-Up: Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle (in that order)

 

Wrestler of the Year (Female) : Trish Stratus. Worked hard, got over with wrestling moves instead of her tits and continues to improve. I'm not a huge fan of womens wrestling in the WWE, but I'll give credit where credit is due.

 

Runners-Ip: Molly Holly, Victoria.

 

Match of the Year: Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle vs Rey Mysterio Jr. and Edge, Smackdown Tag Team Titles, No Mercy. Forget tag match of the year, this is one of the best tag matches this compnay has ever put out there, period. Innovative spots, awesome crowd heat and booking that was played out to fuck with the minds of every single member of that crowd. You just knew that crowd was waiting for Angle to hit Benoit or Benoit to hit Angle resulting in their loss, so when things like Benoit accidentally nailing Angle with the headbutt AND Angle kicking out happened, it made the match work all the more beautifully. I'd also be lying if I said it didn't make me smile to see Edge tap out clean in the middle of the ring.

 

PPV of the Year: WrestleMania X8. I was there. I lost my voice cheering for Hogan. Was it childhood nostalgia? Oh God yes. Do I regret it or change my mind now? Oh fuck no. Flame away.

 

TV Show of the year: Smackdown. There are few arguments that can be made for RAW being the better show. Very few. Actually, there's one: RVD vs Eddy Guerrero Ladder Match, because that's basically the only match it's put out that out-did the work on Smackdown. Benoit and Guerrero jumping only put one more nail in the coffin of RAW, as it allowed them to branch out and wrestle their style, as opposed to lumping it through a 5 miniute shit-fest with Bubba Dudley or Jeff Hardy. With a few exceptions, every single Main Event that Smackdown has put out has been good, on occasion great wrestling. Well done Paul, well done.

 

Rookie of the Year: Brock Lesnar. Really, there's no competition here, but this kid came up quick and worked hard doing it. The fans wanted this guy as a face since day one (ex. SummerSlam) but they didn't get it for a long time and now all that pent up face-heat is manifesting itself back out. Had some good matches with Rock, RVD and even Bubba Ray Dudley and will no doubt present us with some great matches against Benoit and Angle in the future. Agile, bumps well, sells well and continues to astonish with his super-human strength to boot.

 

Tag Team of The Year: I'm torn on this one, so I'm going the pussy route and declaring a tie between Booker T and Golddust and Los Guerreros. Both are for totally different reasons. I want to pick GoldenBook because it has totally revitalized Booker's WWE career, as well as Golddust. Their promo work is top-notch and they work as hard as they can in the ring, especially Golddust who is fast becoming a secret fave of mine on RAW. It would be a crime for them not to go over at Armageddon for the tag straps, because they're been ready for them for a long time and so have the fans. The Guerreros have cheated their way into this one by being one of the overally entertaining teams in recent memory. Eddy with his fake Mexican accent and Chavo with his totally obvious American accent always makes for great promos. Their in-ring work cannot be questioned, as the cheating continues and in the words of DEAN "I party and freak out" when it happens. Bonus points go to Los G's for getting Chavo TV time and getting his over as a plausible heel.

 

Most Improved: Edge. Horrible selling aside, Edge gets my vote this year. His promo's are getting better, his ring-work and pacing are getting better and he manages to run with Angle, Benoit and Guerrero in the ring. His over-ness with the fans (and not just the girls) reaches scary levels at times and it's obvious that this guy is going to be the Golden Child one day for this company. Now if he could just work on that selling...

 

Honourable Mention: Golddust.

 

Promo of The Year: Jericho's " I am not a joke" promo on The Rock, right before Royal Rumble. I loved all of this, it was chock-full of the Jericho that we need to see right now. Intense, angry and ready to prove something to the world. The Rocks' reaction was classic as well, as his facial expression changed from mockery to seriousness. The fact that Jericho just came out screaming at the Rock and didn't get any music or pyro added to it. Great stuff.

Wrestler of the Year (Male) : Kurt Angle - Eddie and Kurt RULED the ring this year, however Angle's charisma IMO surpasses that of Eddie's and it was shown in some AWESOME segments he performed very well this year. While Eddie was great, Kurt was godly and is one of the finest wrestlers ever to enter a wrestling ring.

Runners-Up: Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit

 

 

Wrestler of the Year (Female) : No one has improved like Trish Stratus. Easily the best the WWE has, Trish went from ringside bimbo, to wrestling bimbo in a matter of months, in no small part of Mr. Finlay.

Runners-Ip: Molly Holly

 

Match of the Year: Triple H vs Shawn Michaels - Summerslam 2002 - While i doubt many will vote for this, nothing this year made me mark out as crazy as this match did (Hogan/Rock came close though), and it was a great match to boot, so I'm sticking with this.

 

PPV of the Year: Quite easily Summerslam - Top to bottom the finest line-up one could ask for this year, an awesome opener, great IC match, fantastic brawl and electric main event. Brilliant show.

 

TV Show of the year: Even though Vince cut the Australian feed of Smackdown earlier this year, i feel that show, if only just by reading SK's rants, blows away RAW every week-uh.

 

Rookie of the Year: I'm with LOTC, Brock has really developed well this year, however they REALLY need to get this Angle-Lesnar match going so Brock can showcase his real wrestling ability.

 

 

Tag Team of The Year: Booker T & Goldust - Kurt & Benoit were fantastic, but they were meant to be. Booker & Goldy were originally a joke...but thanks to Booker and Goldusts charisma and determination they formed a joke into a formidable threat. Goldust really was a strong point in this team.

 

 

Most Improved: Goldust - VERY under-rated and under-appreciated. Goldust gets in the ring every week, despite being ridiculed by management, and busts ass like there is no tomorrow. God bless him for his love of wrestling and determination to give the fans what they want.

 

Honourable Mention: Trish Stratus

 

Promo of The Year: Kane's imitation of Hulk Hogan, if you can call that a promo - I've NEVER laughed so hard in my LIFE. Truly funny. However if that doesnt count, my vote goes to the recent RAW promo with Flair on HBK - Old school promo that SHOWED the kids how it's done by a REAL wrestler. Move over Axl Rose, Jesus Christ = Ric Flair.

THEN, even though he was relegated to being mid-card fodder with Benoit until Heyman used them correctly, he had ***1/2+ matches and THEN made Edge look AWESOME in their matches, including the No DQ match that had me buzzing. Then he tagged with his nephew and made EVERYBODY look good. Eddie is the most giving person in that ring, letting people go over him without losing any heat himself. Angle is the same way, but he was tossed around to much this year, in my opinion.

Runner-ups: Angle, Benoit

 

Wrestler of the Year (Female) : Trish Stratus. She's ended her plateauing though. She needs to add something else to her arsenal.

Runners-Up: Molly Holly, Victoria

 

Match of the Year: Now...I'm gonna be real here. The No Mercy tag was breathtakingly brilliant, but my favorite match of the year is Los Guerreros vs. Benoit and Angle on SD! in the semis for the tag titles. Benoit played Morton to perfection, Chavo stepped it up, and Eddie was on his game, BIG TIME. Angle's hot tag remains one of the best ones I've seen all year. And Benoit's chairshot at the end was SHEER BRILLAINCE.

Runner-up: No Mercy Tag, No DQ Eddy/Edge

 

PPV of the Year: SummerSlam, but I'm gonna give WMX8 the benefit of the doubt. Rocky/Hogan delivered even if most other matches didnt'.

Runner-Up: WrestleMania X8, No Mercy

 

TV Show of the year: It's SmackDown!, and I DARE Vinnie Mac to continue with the hoss-ification of that show. He'll lose SO many viewers...

Runner-up: NWA:TNA (HA!)

 

Rookie of the Year: Brock Lesnar, hands down. Love him or leave him, he tore the house down. Three words: 500 pound F-5.

Runner-up: Noble, Cena

 

Tag Team of The Year: Booker T & Goldust, bar none. They haven't even held the belts, yet time and time again, even with Booker jobbing TWICE in Texas, he's risen to the occasion and delivered. Goldust turned a joke into a credible gimmick, and he's doing all he can, in AND out of the ring to make himself a credible wrestler again.

Runner-ups: Los Guerreros, The Canadian Chrises

 

Most Improved: Which leads me to this category, where Goldie gets the win here. BARELY, might I add, over Chavito.

Runner-up: Chavo, Trish Stratus, Rob Van Dam.

 

Promo of The Year: Hmmm...there's the Eddie/Rocky "Little TIMMY~!" promo, the Rock/Hogan promo, Rock/Jericho, RVD/HHH...damn. I'm going with when Rocky came to RAW. Because I was at that show in San Ho when Austin was for sure not coming back, and then he came out and my brother and I just ERUPTED when he came out. It was AWESOME.

Runners-up: all the promos I listed above, Angle and Benoit arguing backstage before their match a couple weeks after No Mercy...I was in STITCHES.

Match-Rey/Edge vs Benoit/Angle No Mercy. Im a big tag team wrestling fan and this was one the best Ive ever seen

Runner(s) up-Benoit vs Angle Unforgiven, HHH vs Michaels because it far exceeded my expectations and these days I rarely mark out but this match had me marking out big time

 

PPV-Summerslam, nothing else really comes close

Most Improved-Goldust, used to hate this guy but really liked his match with RVD at No Way Out, and he has improved even more since then

Runner up-Edge, but I guess cause that was because he was in there with guys a lot better than him, lets see how he gets on vs Albert

 

Promo-Eddys 'Dont look at me like that, you think I hit you' promo with Benoit and Chavo, awesome, Eddy deserved an Oscar

Runner(s) up-Jericho/Rock pre Rumble, Flairs Dont bring in the nWo, HBK/Flair from last Raw, until Triple H started talking. I also really liked Heymans promos leading up to Survivor Series

Wrestler of the Year (Male) : Eddy Guerrero. As somebody in the WOTY thread stated, nobody busted their ass more in this company this year to make every opponent he had look like a God this year. Not to mention him carrying RVD and The Rock to some of their best matches in recent memory, saving Smackdown by jumping with Benoit and helping the world realize how fuckin great his nephew Chavo is.

I think he carried Edge more than he carried Rock or RVD, but anyways here's my vote:

Wrestler of the year:Eddie Guerrero(GGTW:God's Gift To Wrestling)

Runner up:Kurt Angle

Wrestler of the year(female):Jazz

Runner ups:Who cares about women wrestling in the USA?Bring me some japanese female wrestlers and they'll spin circles around their american counterparts.

Match of the year:RVD v. Eddie G.(ladder match) the good ending of a great feud, the fan favorite went over and the heel didn't loose any heat by getting pin.

Runner ups:Angle/Benoit v. Edge/Mysterio tag titles match(NO Mercy).This would've been #1 but Heyman killed it by using the same wrestlers on almost the same match over and over.

PPV of the year:Summerslam. The Rock did what months of build up couldn't do,and that was make Brock get over.

Runner up:Wrestlemania X8, Hogan and Rock overshadowed HGH's world title win, those 2 got more charisma in their pinkies than HGH does in his whole body.

TV Show of the year:Smackdown because the SD!5(Angle/Eddie/Benoit/Rey/Chavo) made the show watchable and lso b/c RAW is so bad right now that even a test pattern would get more ratings.

Rookie of the year:Brock Lesnar.Here's a good example of a good push, now this rookie has become a main eventer and he pretty much is a hard worker who's still learning the ropes so eventually he will improve.

Tag Team of the year:Los Guerreros.Best heel team in the business today.

Runner ups:Angle/Benoit,Booker/Golddust

Most improved:Edge. Even though he needs now to prove himself if he is ready for the main event by wrestling other people besides Wrestlers that could make you look good with their eyes close.

Promo of the Year:Y2J's "i'm not a joke" promo, Jericho showed his more intense angry side for the first time.

I don't know. With RVD he had to get him to hit certain moves at certain points at JD whereas at other points he let him loose and the outcome wasn't as great; with Edge he had to figure out a way to work to his strengths and cover his weaknesses (the no DQ, working over the whole body). Very close.
