Jimmy Eat World and like many emo bands are just like a spin-off of Punk (so is garage rock, grunge, etc...) and which is basically the same thing, over and over and over and over and over... Tool on the other hand has a unique style of music, that is different from song to song and album to album.

The majority of the 60's biggest hits were by garage bands. One of the biggest was the Kingsmen's Louie Louie and that was in 62, Stooges and MC5 didn't come around until about 69. Even early Stones and Beatles was considered garage until they progressed out of that stage.

ARE YOU FUCKING RETARDED? Answer truthfully, how much DEP have you actually heard? They're one of the most insanely technical bands I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Absolutely everything is dead-on at all times, both in the studio AND live. To me, it's incredibly impressive that a band can play such an offbeat/erratic style, and still be that tight playing live. Most hated band, sure, that'll work, but to say that they're WORSE than "musicians" like, say, Sisqo is ridiculous.

Meaningful lyrics, creative riffs, interesting beats, and lord are they diverse. They went from a good raw sound on Opiate, to a darker motif with Undertow, then did a complete 180 with Aenima, adding in way more samples and gloss, then completely raised the bar with Lateralus. I'd call them the second coming of Pink Floyd in that respect, but they need to put out 4 or 5 more albums that are all different to attain that honor. They also do long songs better than anyone I've heard that's still active and recording music. Did I mention they're probably the best band I've ever seen live? Well, they are.

I've heard people who don't like Tool call them ponderous, pretentious, and too weird, but boring is a new one. I could see people calling Undertow boring because it's more of a straight rock record than their others, but their last two albums keep my head ringing better than just about anything else I know. Lateralus was a bit of an acquired taste, but till now I've never known anyone who wasn't hooked instantly by Aenima first time through. They've some of the best musicians I've ever heard, and though I'm one of the first to use the "I don't care how well they play if they can't write good songs" argument, I've always found Tool to fit this bill perfectly.

I heard there really shitty Christmas song that I can't remember the name of, it was only two or three minutes long but it seemed like it was a half hour. It seems to me like they're just trying too hard to be wacky and off the wall. On the other hand, they do have some decent videos.
