God is a concept by which we measure our pain.

..."In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Gen. 1:1

..."Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!" Deuteronomy 6:4

..."But know that the LORD has set apart for Himself him who is godly;

. The LORD will hear when I call to Him." Psalm 4:3

..."Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him," Psalm 33:18

..."Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel,

. 'I am the First and I am the Last;

. Besides Me there is no God.' Isaiah 44:6

Rat's Milk, my young friend, GOD is not a concept. GOD is very much a person. As from the scripture above, you can see that He is not just some mesuring stick.

He sees. He creates. He speaks.

He owns everything! He is the reason you are reading this post right now. And He is watching you at this very moment.

A little tip from uncle Dopey; love Him, make Him happy, don't make Him mad!

Were I to be a religious man, I'd subscribe to the notion that God is utterly indifferent to us and all of our actions. We are to him as a raindrop is to the Mississipi River, as Vonnegut put it. I actually think the pages of The Sirens of Titan was the one point at which religion ever seemed plausible to me. Check it out. And if anyone counters by referring me to the Bible, there's going to be hell to pay. Hell to pay!

well, personally, i don't really distinguish bands or artists by their religious beliefs. if i did, i wouldn't think of george harrison as that beatle who wrote 'give me love' but as that hindu artist who plays with ravi shankar.

as for 'god', it's a great song from a great album. Inc., maybe you should do a review of 'Imagine' and compare and contrast its strengths and weaknesses as the followup to Plastic Ono Band!

for the sake of my sanity, please stop taking these jokes and turning them into a theological pissing match. in case you didn't pick up on it, "god is a concept by which we measure our pain" is a LINE from a SONG. it was meant as a clever little gibe, not some profound argument concerning the nature of god and man. if you disagree with it, take it up with john lennon and not the music fans of this board. you are in no way obligated to defend your position if you disagree with a LINE from a SONG that someone quotes. if someone offhandedly threw out a post saying "all women got a little bitch in 'em" i wouldn't feel inclined to go off on a rant about how misogynistic that view is and how it's sexist and ignorant. see, even though i disagree with the quote, i let it slide because it's just somebody being funny and making a reference. you believe strongly in god: we get it already. this is the music folder, and it should remain strictly the music folder.

Won't happen. I officially quit writing for the site yesterday.

Over the last couple of weeks, I knocked out a couple of potential columns for the site, but wasn't satisified with either one. Plus, with the school semester starting up, I decided I'd be better off just leaving the main page rather than sit there and do nothing.

Interesting post Kinetic. I don't consider myself too much of a religious man, seeing that God says true religion is visiting orphans and widows. I don't know too many orphans and widows.

I do consider myself a Christian. In the fullest sense of the word. Seeing that this ultra-dimensional, dis-embodied, all knowing, all powerful being called GOD, made me born again (i.e. took my dead spirit inside me and made it alive by His power.), and now has let me be called by His title (i.e. a follower of CHRIST -- a Christian.).

Now let's look at this book 'The Sirens of Titan'. You said that its pages made religion plausible to you. Ok. Why is this book different to you, than me and my Bible?

The Word of God (the Bible) is an awesome thing. And it has inspired countless millions of people. Why are you so against it? Has a Bible ever flown off a shelf and cut a limb off? What has this book done to you, to make you THREATEN eveyone on this board who loves it so? I'd honestly would like to know.

sometimes topics take on a life of their own and go strange places, and i'm fine with that as long as it remains in the general vicinity of music. dopey took one offhanded comment and blew it completely out of proportion, posting a reply that had nothing to do with music and made no mention of it whatsoever. and since philosophy of religion has managed to creep into many topics lately, it's kind of annoying to see it pop up again in the music folder.

god the dog, I write this post for the sake of your sanity.

What you call a joke or a glib, is many times just sarcasam. If you are not aware of the root meaning of sarcasam here it is. 'Sarcae' greek, meaning to 'tear the flesh'.

Many times on this board I see this kind of behavior. Now let me explain why I respond like I do.

GOD is the soveriegn ruler of this universe. You and Rat's Milk, as well as everybody on this earth are drinking His water. Eating His food. Breathing His air. He has commanded all human beings to love and bless eachother. We are not supposed to hurt one another through physical violence or through word. When someone posts something that Sarcae's me or someone else (tears the flesh) then I respond to them, explaining their error.

Bottom line-- don't be evil and try and 'tear the flesh'. If you do. Then one of His servants will let you know that you have over-stepped your authority. And you should stop.

I hope this helps your sanity.

Dopey, answer me this:

Where do all of the good, honest people go to when they die...if they don't believe in God or particularly follow the beliefs set on page by some sexually frustrated old misogynistic racists and homophobes all those thousands of years ago?

See, that last comment has nothing to do with this board. NOTHING. Neither does the theological talk. Take it to Current Events or No Holds Barred or General Chat, where talk that doesn't involve music, movies, video games, etc. go.

Back to the music...

In all honesty, I like the Christian rap stylings of Ill Harmonics, mainly because they don't rap about God 24/7, but instead about hope, love, honesty, and everything else that believing in God allegedly gives people.

Getting Back to the topic at hand here,

I am a strong disbliever in the religion of Christianity and I will leave it at that as not to get into a war of worlds here.

My take on the christianzation of music is this, The Christian advocates simply use Rock music as a expression of their faith and another outlet to implement and enforce their beliefs.

I have no problems with others believing in what they wish, that is what is truly the message of the real god, not your abstained god.

I never could respect "artists" that are so adament in their christianity(or anyother). I strongly believe that Christians are the lowest of all religons, even more so then Islamic faithful here in america. We've given our Christian leaders and policitians vastly overruling power. (Quick to judge others, and so willing to blind themselfs)

We unfortantly live in a society that loves to present itself as equally aligned but indeed we aren't nearly that. Our customs and traditions here in America are strongly Christianized. The music is strongly representive of this.

We have a surge of Christian bands, musicians and artists that easily are given too much time and whom offer nothing intelligently.

I perfer bands that will open their minds to other faiths instead of completly enforcing their own faiths in a effortless means of expression.

I am not saying that Christian Musicians and Bands aren't talented, a few of them posses some, It is in my strong belief that Christian Musicans offer nothing as Lyricists.

Does anyone know if there's Jewish rock or anything like that? I think the concept of religious popular music should go beyond christianity.

For instance, start up a new genre called Druid-core, or something.

Well, I know there's Viking Metal, which is basically just bands based on Norse mythology and the ancient Norse theology...

So, Dopey, you're saying somebody goes to Hell simply because of ONE difference in thought, and not because they're a bad person? Hardly seems fair, which kinda makes the entire "God is the supreme and fair master of all" idea null and void.

Oh no, I think the religion of Christianity, at it's base, is great. It's supposed to teach acceptance and for all to be peaceful. It's the actual Christians themselves I have a beef with...

...but that's not here nor there, so I won't get into it.

Please don't judge Christianity based on this idiot. To take his beliefs as the "word of God" regarding an entire community/people/whatever is just as narrow-minded as he is.

well as someone famous (i forget who) said, the worst argument for any religion are its adherents.

CoreyLazarus416, poeple go to hell because they have sinned. God is Holy. The average person in America right now does not understand that. GOD is Holy!!! That means completely, 100%, absolutly without any sin. HE hates sin. He absolutly hates every and all sin. He hates everything about sin. Sin is vile and putrid in His sight!!! Here are a few verses on the nature of GOD:

..."Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings; with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called out to another and said, "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts," Isaiah 6:2-3

..."He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords; who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light;" 1 Tim. 6:15-16

..."Therefore, since we received a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire." Hebrews 12:28-29

The last verse is a metaphor for the Holiness of God. Meaning that there can never be any sin in His direct presence. He burns sin away!!!

Now as for people and their sin, God says, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," Romans 3:23

..."There is none righteous, not even one; There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God;" Romans 3:10-11

CoreyLazarus416 this is the penalty of sin: "FOR THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH," Romans 6:23 Spiritual death. Eternal seperation from God. Hell/ lake of fire.

Now, all people who are not Christians, their spirits inside their bodies are DEAD, and they are covered in sin. Hence, they are going to hell.

The only way to become spiritualy alive and be washed of your sins, is by being Born Again. "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." John 3:3

Now those whom He chose before the foundation of the world, He will cause to become born again. It is an act of God's grace (grace is unmerrited favor; something you didn't work for.). If He has chosen you from before the foundation of the world, then He will make you born again, He will make your DEAD spirit ALIVE; and wash you clean from all your sins! He makes you born again, He gives you 'a measure of faith' (Rom. 12:3), which creates a desire in your heart to follow Jesus; then you hear the gospel and you exersice the faith He has given you, then Pow!!! You are now a Christian. One who is born again by the Spirit of God!

..."PAUL, and apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus, and who are faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,

just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace,...

'also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will,...

'For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast."

Ephesians 1:1-7, 11, 2:8-9

..."But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" --that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed." Romans 10:8-10

So, CoreyLazarus416, since God is Holy, and since sin is evil (the breaking of God's commands/law), then "there is none righteous, no, not one." We may think we are good compared to Adolf Hitler, fine. However, according to God we are sinners/lawbreakers/rebels in His kingdom. The penalty is spiritual death, the sentence is eternal damnation.

The only way out of this mess, is to be born again, and have Faith in Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the Holy One of Israel. Jesus Messiah died on a cross, to shed His blood, to wash away the sins of His people. On the third day He rose from the dead. He now has the keys to death and hell. Salvation comes through Him, and Him alone.

That is the Gospel.

Believe it and put your trust in Him; and you go to heaven.

Don't believe it and don't put your trust in Him; and you go to hell.

PSALM \ 'sa (l)m, : a sacred song or poem used in worship; esp: one of the biblical hymns collected in the Book of Psalms

------------

PSALM 2

------------

WHY are the nations in an uproar,

And the peoples devising a vain thing?

The kings of the earth take their stand,

And the rulers take counsel together

Against the LORD and against His

Anointed:

"Let us tear their fetters apart,

And cast away their cords from us!"

He who sits in the heavens laughs,

The Lord scoffs at them.

Then He will speak to them in His anger

And terrify them in His fury:

"But as for Me, I have installed My King

Upon Zion, My holy mountain."

"I will surely tell of the decree of the

LORD:

He said to Me, "Thou art My Son,

Today I have begotten Thee.

'Ask of Me, and I will surely give the

nations as Thine inheritance,

And the very ends of the earth as Thy

possession.

'Thou shalt break them with a rod of

iron,

Thou shalt shatter them like earthen-

ware.'"

Now therefore, O kings, show discernment;

Take warning, O judges of the earth.

Worship the LORD with reverence,

And rejoice with trembling.

Do homage to the Son, lest He become

angry, and you perish in the way,

For His wrath may soon be kindled.

How blessed are all who take refuge in

Him!
