Guest The Mighty Damaramu Report post Posted February 8, 2003 I was wondering if anybody here had seen any of the old Real World Tag Leagues and Champion Carnivals? I'm not talking about anything from the 90's and on. I mean from the 70's and 80's. Anyone seen any? Were they any good? I looked at some results and match times.....they don't appear to workrate intensive but I'm probably wrong because most of the guys in it that I know as has-beens these days were pretty young then. So anyone?
EL DANDY~! 0 Report post Posted February 8, 2003 It seems to me that some of the late 70s tag leagues, the ones that featured the Funks and such, were just awesome tag matches. Not technical masterpieces, but DAMN what brutality...
Guest XdojimeX Report post Posted February 9, 2003 I haven't seen many of the early Carnivals (plus there's that stretch where Baba stopped promoting them) but I recommend the Tag League tape set Vap put out awhile ago. Each volume is kind of a digest version 3 years at a time ('86-'88 for example) with the final matches each year being shown in full. Some classics for the time, Funks vs. Brody/Snuka, Tsuruta/Tenryu vs. Choshyu/Yatsu, Tenryu/Kawada vs. Hansen/Gordy..great stuff.
Guest Jubuki Report post Posted February 9, 2003 The new G+ AJ Classics are covering a pile of 70's stuff, too. Not all of it looks stellar, but quite a bit does. Lynch is getting those monthly shows. I'd check them out were I you.
Guest PlatypusFool Report post Posted February 9, 2003 I'm picking up some 70's AJPW with Harley Race vs. Giant Baba on it very soon. Kitsch offence galore!
Guest The Mighty Damaramu Report post Posted February 9, 2003 Hey did Andre the Giant ever compete for AJ or NJ in the 70's? I was wondering because I'd like to see how the crowd reacts to him. And while not a technical masterpiece or anything I think it'd be kinda cool to see Baba/Andre.
Guest XdojimeX Report post Posted February 9, 2003 There's a Hansen/Andre match from the early 80's (NJ?) thats become sort of a cult favorite. I have it on a comp somewhere but havent gotten around to seeing it yet. Should dig that sucker out...Anyhow its usually called the best Andre match ever so there you go. Guest The Mighty Damaramu Report post Posted February 9, 2003 Sometimes it hurt to watch Andre wrestle in the later years. He couldn't take a bump and I was afraid someone was going to kill him if they hit him to hard. He just seemed fragile. But maybe he's not in this match. Guest The Mighty Damaramu Report post Posted February 11, 2003 And after reading Hisa's history of Puro for like the 4th time I am really getting interested in getting some classic matches. Like from the 70's and 80's.....hell the 60's to! Any recommendations?
Guest RickyChosyu Report post Posted February 11, 2003 This was posted in the "Matches to Check Out" thread. Scroll down and you'll find a post by jdw (John Williams) with his top twenty AJPW matches from the 70's and 80's: The thread A great read. You definitely want it as a primer on the seventies but there's another great post by John on 90's AJPW and an excellent list of 90's Joshi matches by Chris Coey (who posts as "Ichimonji" at Wrestling Classics and "Jubuki" here). If you want more recomendations on 60's and 70's footage, tOA is resource with tons of posters knowledgable on the subject, including Williams who posts there constantly. Look in the "eighties" folder there for tons of posts on what to look for. (It feels good to be a helper - well, a would-be helper, at least )
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2003 "Sabu V. Sandman" Was he joking when he said that was one of his favourite matches ever? I had gone into that thread so many times, and I've always wondered. It seems odd for the guy who started the "Kawada" trend, so to speak...
Guest wolverine Report post Posted February 11, 2003 What are you talking about, man? jdw didn't say that was one of his favorite matches.
Guest RickyChosyu Report post Posted February 11, 2003 That would be WJD, the guy who created the thread, that said that. Seeing as he included that on a "top twenty ninties matches" list with a Shark Boy match and an ECW Three-way, I can't really be suprised by it. Again, you've got to scroll down and read the posts from "jdw" and "Ichimonji" if you want to get much out of that thread.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2003 My fault, I just glanced through it, so I suppose I mixed up the names. Even though this probably shouldn't be in the puro folder, I will add it anyway since it's relevant to that board. Check out the Flair GOAT thread, since it's an interesting debate on the greatness(or lack thereof) of Flair.
Guest RickyChosyu Report post Posted February 12, 2003 Yeah, some really good posts from Jewett, Yohe, and others in that one. I would have enjoyed it more if Meltzer has stuck around.
