the greatest american rocknroll band of all-time?

Nrivana jacked their sound from the Pixies.

Which Cobain readily admitted.

Than the Pixies? Come on. They wrote a song based on a Luis Bunuel film. How cool is that?

Furthermore, I point you to the skit "You Fuckin' Die" on Surfer Rosa and say nay, no one is cooler (in a dorky sort of way) than the Pixies.

No love for The Eagles here I see, so I'll pimp them

pimping the eagles for the greatest rock group of all time is like pimping your retarded sister on the street: the really desperate people may bite, but the rest either laugh at you or recoil in horror.

anywho...

anytime this thread comes up i vote for the velvet underground. one of (IMO) only two bands in history that can claim to be essentially flawless, the other band being the who. they weren't technically proficient musicians, but i don't count that against them cause they still played great. awesome live band. about as perfect a catalog of songs as you can get. vocals that almost always kicked ass & sounded unlike anything else (whether it be reed, cale, tucker or nico--i say "almost" cause yule's vocals were kind of weak). up there with the beatles in terms of never being afraid to try something new & almost never misstepping: all 4 of their albums are classics, & no album sounds like another. (i feel they made some missteps--'european son', 'the gift', etc.--but the small number of these is pretty shocking, considering how much they were experimenting & how often they got it right.) decades ahead of their time in every sense, imitated by scores of bands & still not sounding like anyone else.

about the jimi hendrix experience: definitely one of the best bands ever, but i wouldn't consider them american. two of them are british, & IIRC they were formed while hendrix was in england.

To quote the Dude, "I've had a long fucking day and I don't want to listen to the fucking Eagles."

I think On the Border is a great album, but other than that I find them overplayed and overrated. You want to start pimping the James Gang and I'm all ears.

Everyone knows that The Doors owns you and your mother. And I'd have to throw Tom Petty in at second.

i've said it before and i'll say it again: the doors are a glossy, pussified version of the velvet underground. they did some great stuff, but everything the doors did, the velvets did better. the doors showed the darker side of the 60s drug scene? reed was writing songs about heroin & sadomasochism before the doors even formed. 'sister ray' is darker & scarier than anything i've ever heard by the doors. the doors were experimenting with looser, different sounds? the velvets went farther. the doors experimented with long solos? the velvets went farther; again, see 'sister ray'. reed wrote better songs, & they boast the most consistently great backlog of albums out of any band.

VU: 1

doors: 0

If I have to use "rock and roll" as my measuring stick (so can't pick a metal, punk, funk, etc. band) ...

Monster Magnet

Every band in the world wishes they were as rock and roll as Monster Magnet.

As for the original post I think people forget some really great American bands from the 60's because the Beatles, Stones, Kinks etc (never liked The Who as much) are forever pimped. Bands like the Byrds, The Band and Love were all amazingly good.

As for my pick i'd probably go for The Beach Boys, with REM probably second.

I never saw the big deal about The Doors or Talking Heads, I really don't think much of either of them.

My picks are Aerosmith, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and the Beach Boys.

Aerosmith

Matter of fact, I'm listening to "One Way Street" right now.

I'd say the Velvet Underground and the Pixies are up there, but I'll let Pitchfork tell you how it is....

"On the scale of human accomplishments, turning out a classic album ought to rank up there with climbing Mount Everest. Stoned. With one leg. And no oxygen. Given the infinite potential for obnoxious excess within the Rock genre, it's no small feat to assemble an album that's so well phrased, so deftly stated, that its impact extends far beyond the realm of the audible. Turn out two or more such albums and you're headed for legendary status. Turn out five or six and you're R.E.M."

I so can't get into Aerosmith these days...don't get me wrong, the early stuff is great. But their 80s work was the drizzling shits till Pump...and then after that they seem to be putting out the same songs over and over again. Every time I hear a new Aerosmith song I can't help but think "haven't I heard this already?"

If were talking about real Rock N Roll here than the title of America's greatest Rock N Roll band goes to none other than the NEW YORK FUCKING DOLLS!

Some of my favorite American bands:

Aerosmith

Nirvana

Van Halen (with David Lee Roth, especially)

The Doors

Pearl Jam (one of the best live bands I have seen)

I am sure if we started a "Greatest Rock and Roll Band of all time" thread, then we could throw in bands like the Stones, Beattles, and Led Zepplin (all of whom are some of my favorite bands).

Well, honestly YNA, people are throwing down Van Halen and the Eagles. I think we've strayed past the talent issue a while ago.

Hey man, don't knock the Dolls. If you wanna talk about rip-offs, Aerosmith really ripped the Dolls off. Of course, if you wanna go further you could say the Dolls ripped the Stones off.

But the Dolls were cool because when you listen to them you imagine yourself in some garage or basement with the speakers blasting in your ears and people fighting and breaking windows. It's all sounds so glamorous. Kind of like the MC5 or the Stooges. Hey, nobody's mentioned them yet, they both kick tons of ass as well!

Van Halen didn't have talent?

Well, I suppose they had talent on a technical level and certainly a commercial level, but in my eyes they never really did much with what they had. I'm not a fan of the speedy cheese-metal sound that Van Halen embodies, and I don't think I'd even put them close to being the best American band. I don't even think they'd make it into my top ten.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to really rip on the NYD, but when you think of greatest "American Rock N Roll Band," The New York Dolls are not the first band to cross most people minds...or even the 20th band

I'll have to say Aerosmith.

Their 70s albums were tremendous, and while Draw The Line started a downward trend, Toys In The Attic and Rocks are the definitive American hard rock albums of the decade. Their bad habits started catching up with them after that. Night In The Ruts was a less than stellar way to end the 70s.

The band fell apart for a while in the early 80s, losing both Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, and releasing the disappointing (but still a little underrated) Rock In A Hard Place. 1985's Done With Mirrors, with the original lineup back together, was a declaration of intent for what would follow: the solid Permanent Vacation, and the excellent Pump.

Get A Grip, in 1993, was the last great album the bad made. Their releases since then have still been good, but lacked the power of their classic older stuff, or of their late 80s resurgence. Still, for a 30-year body of work, theirs is quite impressive, and has many, many more ups than downs.

Supposedly their next album will be leading them back to their roots.

Yeah, because everybody else is naming Metal, Alternative, and Hard Rock bands. Fuck, I'd take the Dolls over most of them anyway.

The Dolls on the other hand were straight up kick ass Rock N Roll in terms of the look, lifestyle, and music. They were also probably one of the most influential American bands of all time, doesn't mean their best, but they sure as hell crossed the minds of a hell of lot of important musicans over the past thirty years. Everyone from Kiss and Aerosmith to the Ramones and Replacements list them as major influences. Not to mention Slash stole his look from Johnny Thunders.

Oh, and the Dolls may have ripped off the Stones, but the Stones ripped off the Pretty Things.
