Guest Still Fly Report post Posted April 30, 2003 As far as Im concerned the Wolves lost the series in Game 4. They had a chance to go up 3-1 and win it on the Target Center. But hey, garnett choked and here we are Game six in Los Angeles. The Lakers are undeafeated in elimation games since 2001. The Wolves are dead. Now for the Spurs. what everyone forgets, that while the Spurs do well in the regular season, in the playoffs they dissapear. The Lakers are 8-1 against the Spurs in the playoffs since 2001. Duncan never plays well against Shaq andth role always step it up in the playoffs as always. Nobody on the Spurs can guard Kobe as well as Shaq. To me the Spurs are all hype. Spurs could bring out Ferry & Willas to throw elbows and stomp on Shaqs big toe or they could use the game plan the T-Wolves use to beat the Lakers which is double team both Kobe & Shaq and make the role players of the Lakers beat them. Malik Rose will be playing the part of Troy Hudson as the other scoring option and who knows maybe Bowen will get on a 3 point shooting streak. The Spurs can beat the Lakers if Parker & Rose become offensive threats while relieving the pressure off Duncan & Robinson in the middle. I know they won all 4 this year, but I'll be surprised if they have a .500 or better record against L.A. in the regualr season for the last 3 years. The last 2 or 3 years in the playoffs, The Spurs seemed to have a mental problem when it came to the Lakers: We can't beat them. Then again, the whole league seemed to have that problem. Now The Spurs' convidence is high, and they no longer "fear" the Lakers, should they have to play them. Although I would of rather seen Spurs vs. winner of Wolves/Blazers; let the Mavs, Lakers, and Kings destroy each other. And historically the Suns have always played the Spurs hard. Yes, he choked last night, but frankly, he has taken a team that is quite bad to be honest, and carried them through a dogfight with the world champs. Although if we were just going by playoff performance, friggin Troy Hudson could probably be a contender for that whole thing. The Spurs cant afford to go with the same stragey they have been going with for 2 years. They cant beat the Lakers doublin teaming Shaq or Kobe because eiter one orthe other wil burn you. Not to metion the role players (Fisher, George, Horry, Madsen) have all steped it up. The Spurs role players are un-tested in the playoffs. The Lakers role players are. Nobody can stop shaq in the paint, not even Duncan. The Spurs guards cant guard Kobe. Fisher is finally hitting threes. George brings need hustle and scoring at small foward. Horry always seems to get his. My point is this you can say how the Spurs are not afraid of the Lakers, you can talk about Parker and Bruce Bowen and Claxton. You got 5 guys on this team with over 10 years in the league who all have an extensive postseason history with Robinson, Kerr, Willis, Ferry and Smith. You got three more guys that have been in the league for 5 years or more and have all been in the playoffs including Rose, Duncan and Bowen. Rose and Duncan have been in the playoffs every year they've been in the league haven't they? I mean, this team IS a former champion right? Then you got 3 youngs guy who have been in the league less than 3 season but all three have been in the playoffs for those years. So what your left with is Ginobili being the ONLY person on this team who hasn't been tested in the playoffs. Oh, and I'm pretty sure that voting for the MVP award is done before the playoffs begin. Spurs had always been given that stigma of being soft because Mr Robinson and in general most of the team are nice guys in daily life. And the association of the old commercials from NIKE when David was using a Mr Rogers persona. But that was years ago and every year the Spurs have been adding free agents, international players and veterans for the sole purpose of being the NBA champions. Now with Kevin Willas playing a Dennis Rodman role if you will, the Spurs are ready to challenge the team(s) from California for the title. Tim Duncan had a Triple Double but Shaq almost had one also in the last game of the 1st round so they will basically cancel each other out. Face it the Spurs role players are better than the Lakers role players. And we all know that defense win championships and the Spurs have a superior defense. Don't forget that we're talking best of seven. They may stop one of them a game or two. But this is the playoffs and this is The 3 time, 3 time, 3 time, world champs, the role players will step up. If the Spurs can keep Kobe & Shaq under 25 points a piece than they will win the game. And the Spurs better wake up and shoot better than 40% in the game to win the series. That's not a factor unless the game is close. I think Duncan and Shaq are about the same from the line though. You do have a good point, but 25 a piece is good enough to beat The Spurs. They may have a good defense, but LA has been getting solid games from weak bench players lately. If that continues to happen then everybody else can hang it up.
