TheOriginalOrangeGoblin Posted April 29, 2003 Report Posted April 29, 2003 Whenever people mention great series they say Flair/Steamboat, Dynamite/Sayama, Angle/Benoti etc. but one forgotten great series is the 1988 World title feud between Savage & DiBiase. They had a ****1/4 match on the SNME before WM4, a **** match at MSG in which DiBiase's nose is borken 1 minute in, a solid *** cage match which features a fan attacking Virgil and a ****1/2 match at Wrestlefest 88 which for some reason was cut from the commercial reason(does anyone know why?). 3 of the 4 matches are available on the Macho Madness tape and they are all great matches which showcase how awesome these guys really were. Anyone else got comments on this series of matches?
EL DANDY~! Posted April 29, 2003 Report Posted April 29, 2003 These matches are hardly forgotten, since I know the rulingness of both wrestlers and their ability to put on some really good matches. I've seen the cage match, and that's about it. I've seen snippets of the other matches, but no doubt in my mind that those matches were great.
HurriShane Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 Plus, they met in the finals of the title tournament at WM 4 in a ***1/2 match .
Guest tank_abbott Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 I hate to argue * ratings but ***1/2 for WM 4??? Steamboat/Valentine was ALOT better than i remembered it when I watched it for the 1st time in 7 years recently
cawthon777 Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 They had a ****1/4 match on the SNME before WM4, a **** match at MSG in which DiBiase's nose is borken 1 minute in, a solid *** cage match which features a fan attacking Virgil and a ****1/2 match at Wrestlefest 88 which for some reason was cut from the commercial reason(does anyone know why?). About a third of Wrestlefest was cut from the CHV. My best guess is because no CHV at the time ran 3hrs and they could use the other matches to sell future video tapes (like Macho Maddness). I believe a few others were aired shortly thereafter on Prime Time.
Guest Corey291 Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 DiBiase and Savage had the best series of matches during 1988. Their matches at Madison Square Garden (I have them all on tape) easily outshine their SNME and Wrestlemania matches. -Corey
Guest theoldxpac Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 Taht wrestlemania match is SOO overated it just not true, it was pretty short and didnt feature anything at all. Corey what tape have you got these matches on
Guest Tim Cooke Posted April 30, 2003 Report Posted April 30, 2003 Best series of matches in 1988 was MX/Fantastics. Dibiase was good, but these guys were working at a higher level. Tim
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted May 2, 2003 Report Posted May 2, 2003 Just out of curiousity, have any of you seen a Duggan-Dibiase match from the early eighties? I believe that it was part of a series, and I've heard rumours about this match being excellent, hard to believe when you think of Duggan being involved in anything remotely average. Hell, Meltzer has this on his Top 20 matches of the 80s, and although I don't take his opinions very seriously, that was an eye opener. Can someone shed any light on this for me?
Guest Stunt Granny Posted May 3, 2003 Report Posted May 3, 2003 I don't like Savage vs. DiBiase from WM 4. It was too short, the fans weren't into it until Hogan came down, and the ending made Hogan look like a hero and everyone else like a chump. Plus Hogan stealling Savages thunder in the post match was horrible. I mean yeah it's 1988 Hogan is still mega over but if your going to have Savage go over at the end of the night don't make him celebrate with Hogan flexing in the background.
