TSM Comic Book Superhero Tournament

A nomination thread was posted awhile back, but I haven’t seen anything done with it. With some other tournaments I’m running winding up, I figured I might as well see if I could get this one to go. I took suggestions from the previous nominations thread and seeded of my own accord, taking into account history, fame, notoriety, past storylines and the characters themselves. I seeded so that DC and Marvel (most of the nominations anyway) received the top two slots in each bracket and then cross seeded from there (meaning a DC one would be in the same bracket as a Marvel two and vice versa). These are only heroes, as villains will be done in a separate tourney when this one has been completed. Voting will be open until at least Wednesday, more if the tournament proves to be popular and ballots are flowing in. Clearly mark your winner for each match up.

There's a lot of golden age DC names on the list, because I like them and actually named them in the nomination thread. Pretty much every single name mentioned in that thread got picked and I think I only added like three or four names. I actually cut out the Golden Age Sandman when I realized I forgot to put the Crow in, so I'm not that biased, just halfway.

 

I pretty much ranked everybody first and then did the seeding and when I got down to the 8th and 9th slots I saw that I still had Iceman and The Human Torch on the list, so I said fuck it, seems like a natural to me.

 

Basically vote for who you like best. What you think are the better and more important characters to the comics industry. As noted in the seeding criteria, I weighed longevity, fame and overall character and comics storylines heavily. Basically we're looking for the best overall character, not fighter.

 

Edit: Thanks YnA, glad you like the tournament. I know you were dissatisfied with the TSM favorite t.v. shows tourney and had every right to be.

(8) Mr. Fantastic - battle of the greying temples. Tough one, since both Reed & Garrick are "firsts" in their respective companies, but in this case, I'll go with the science geek (Flash will get his due later).

 

(12) Starman (Jack Knight) - Jack & Kyle both debuted in the same year, but Jack was always a cult favorite and whose series was generally well-received (though it ended poorly, IMO), while people still bitch & moan about Kyle replacing Hal--9 YEARS LATER.

 

(13) Firestorm - I liked the (original) Crow a lot when I first read it (shortly before the movie came out), but I've always liked Firestorm--he had a great costume design, and the concept was really cool. Plus I mark out for anything related to the JLA during the time Firestorm was hanging out.

 

(6) Robin (Tim Drake) - I never liked Storm, Halle Berry or not.

 

(14) Zatanna - As much as I like the Daredevil title both now and during Frank Miller's run, I had a crush on Zatanna when I was a kid. Childhood comic book crushes trump Frank Miller. And fishnets trump Ben Affleck any day.

 

(7) Jean Gray - I'm generally a fan of Keith Giffen's work, but Lobo never did anything for me. Famke trumps Lobo.

 

(2) Incredible Hulk - I have yet to read any of Morrison's Animal Man stuff, so I'm only familiar with the character's (very) brief run as a member of Justice League Europe. And no way is that going to beat the Hulk (a great character).

(1) Spider-Man - Why are all the hot chicks in fishnets up against the mega-popular film franchise stars?

 

(9) Charles Xavier - OK, my friend (a fan of old comics) was telling me about these issues of The Spectre that he bought. In one of them, Corrigan gets attacked from behind in the dark by a female mannequin. So he turns around breaks off her arm and her head. So what, you ask? Well, he doesn't realize that it's a mannequin until AFTER he does this.

 

In short, the Spectre is one FUCKED-UP character. Patrick Stewart trumps the Wrath of God.

 

(5) Green Arrow (Oliver Queen) - Give it up for the '70s hippie.

 

(4) Preacher - Who cares about the Vision?

 

(11) Starman (Ted Knight)

 

(14) Dr. Mid-Nite (Charles McNider) -- the original blind superhero

 

(10) Wildcat - Punisher will move to the next round anyway, but I always enjoyed those Earth-2 JSA stories as a kid, so Wildcat gets the nod.

(16) Blink - Yeah, yeah, Superman is more important & influential. Whatever, man. I buy Exiles, but none of the Superman titles. Go Blink!!

 

(8) Dr. Strange - Dr. Strange was just ubercool. Awesome cape, cool mystical gadgets, lives in Greenwich Village. Carter Hall was just some dude with wings and a mace, plus I'm annoyed with what Geoff Johns has done with the Hall family lately (IMO, Hector & Lyta belong to Vertigo now, and shouldn't have been brought back)

(8) The Human Torch - This month's issue of Alias features a teenage Jessica Jones masturbating to a poster of the Human Torch. I don't think we've ever seen a poster of Bobby get that much action.

 

(12) Batgirl/Oracle (Barbara Gordon) - Why is Captain Marvel, a well-known Superman ripoff, seeded so high, and Barbara (who's appeared in live action form not once, not twice, but three times) seeded so low?

 

(4) Flash (Wally West) - Wally is pretty cool--even his villains like him. Pietro is just a fucking brat.

 

(11) Colossus - died heroically saving the world from the Legacy Virus. Plus, he was in a cool movie (X2), whereas The Thing was in a decidedly shitty one (though it's still fun to watch with your pals).

 

(14) Rorschach - total badass

 

(10) Green Lantern/Sentinel (Alan Scott) - grizzled old guy still fighting the good fight, plus his children are super-powered too! The Silver Surfer is one of the biggest whiners in the galaxy. "Oh, I miss Shalla-Bal. Why must I be tortured so? Why?!?". He needs a big cup of shut the hell up.

BTW, I think you should've left the Golden Age Sandman on (and kicked off the Vision or maybe Doc Mid-Nite). He had a fairly long-running series, which considering it was published in modern times, is a pretty good feat. Still a fun tourney though.

Areacode: Yeah, in hindsight I should have kept Wesley Dodds and booted Dr. Mid-Night. Dodds has been more significant in modern times and has the better overall character. I have just always dug Mid-Night. I think it's the costume.

 

As for the Batgirl vs. Shazam pairing: Captain Marvel has a very long and interesting history, albeit most of it is out of the actual comics continuity. I've always found Batgirl to be pretty lame until the Joker shot her. If you want to talk about crossover media, Marvel has had a couple cartoons over the years and a cult classic live action series from the seventies. Batgirl has had a failed t.v. show, came on another t.v. show when it was going in the crapper and helped kill a movie franchise. Doesn't bode well for her. Although I could easily see bumping her up a few notches and bumping Marvel down.

 

Talking about Batgirl made me realize that I forgot Supergirl. Maybe when we get through the villains in the next tourney, we'll do a women of comics books tournament.

 

Any spelling errors were just typos on my part as I really didn't double check any spellings.

 

I probably also should have cut a few more of my golden age favorites and went for a more eclectic independent variety like Cerebus and Bone, but they're all going to get jobbed out anyway.
