Kurt Angle's best match

Recommended Posts

Guest jm29195

I know everyone thinks Kurt's a great worker but what do you think is his best match:- I'd have to go Royal Rumble 2003 vs Benoit as a wrestling match and Summerslam 2001 vs Austin as a great violent brawl...

Off the top of my head, I'd say Angle vs. Austin from Summerslam 2001, as well. Angle was totally over as a face, and the crowd was going nuts after every Stunner he kicked out of. Great drama and build all throughout. Sure, the DQ ending sucked, but it was somewhat necessary to give Angle his big title win in Pittsburgh the next month. Maybe it was just me, but when Finkle announced Angle as the winner via DQ, and Angle started frustratingly yelling, "No! No!", I just about felt the anger and emotion, watching live on PPV. I love the Ankle Lock on Patrick afterwards. I think that Austin-Rock from WM X7 just barely goes over this for MOTY 2001.

My vote probably has to go to Benoit/Angle at the Royal Rumble. One of the few great matches WWE has put on this year.

well, it's obviously between rumble '03 and summerslam '01, but that's a tough call.

rumble pros:

almost-perfect ending

bigger moveset

more crisp

summerslam pros:

no rest holds at all (million-dollar dream was too short to really be a rest hold)

better role-playing--angle as the never-say-die face, austin as the paranoid heel

HIGH PITCHED intensity

eh...the rumble gets it, but barely.

Yes, it was.

I remember downloading it like the week after, that match ruled all and is easily one of the best, if not THE best match the WWE has put on this year.

I also gotta give some love to the Angle's match against Austin at Unforgiven 2001, while probably not as good as their Summerslam match, that match still ruled.

The emotion at the Summerslam 2001 match, TOTALLY won it over for me.

1. vs Austin at Summerslam 2001.

2. vs. Brock at Wrestlemania XIX.

3. vs. Benoit at Royal Rumble 2003.

I give the SS01 match the nod by a hair over RR03. Crowd was into everything Austin and Angle did. In the RR03 match, they had to build the heat up because the crowd was not into it at first. Could've been the regions (San Jose is always hot) but SS01 does it for me.

what's with all the love for the lesnar match? it wasn't even all that good. 4 of angle's matches with benoit were better (wrestlemania, raw cage, unforgiven, rumble), and i'd even consider his triple threat match with benoit & mysterio to be better.

v Benoit - Royal Rumble 2003

His match with Austin at SummerSlam 2001 was more heated and emotional, but the Rumble match had the superior wrestling and wrestling drama. To me though, the finish to the SummerSlam match was just horrible. It might not have been so bad had the match 'only' been really good, but the match they were having was a classic, and to give it the finish they did killed it dead for me.

Definitely, Summerslam '01 is his best. The Rumble '03 match did have a great finish though. Too bad nobody in the WWE can call a heel hook.

looking at it now, the ending makes perfect sense to me & doesn't really bother me. of course, i was PISSED when i saw it live, but more pissed in a markish way cause i wanted angle to win so bad. sure, it could've been a better end if angle won clean. they'd booked themselves into a corner & it was overall better for business if austin retained; and angle wouldn't have looked as good if austin had outright won (cleanly or by cheating). a run-in DQ ending would've been criminal. considering all the options, they went with the ending that made the most sense--after all, austin made it very clear through the whole match that he was absolutely paranoid about angle being able to beat him, & about losing the title. the end did fit the story, & didn't COMPLETELY ruin the match.

5.) Kurt Angle VS The Rock (No Mercy 2000) [kurts first wwe title win... excellent match]

4.) Kurt Angle VS Brock Lesner (WrestleMania XIX) [brock FN up the ssp brought it down]

3.) Angle/Beniot VS Rey/Edge (No Mercy 2002) [what can i say]

2.) Kurt Angle VS Austin (SummerSlam 01) [the ending pissed me off soo badly, still incredible]

1.) Kurt Angle VS Beniot (Royal Rumble 03) [absolutely AMAZING, had beniot won it would of been PERFECT]

vs Austin and Vs Benoit are both excellent matchs, and the top of what angles done in WWE. I rate them both extremely highly but if i had to choose one out the 2 i would go for vs Austin at SS as it had the emotion where as the RR not so much.

I dont know why people are saying Kurt Angle vs Brock lesnar was one of his best matches because that match wont that good.

Kurts best matches were

Kurt Angle & Benoit vs Rey & Edge (Smackdown 2 out of 3 falls & No Mery 2002)

Kurt Angle vs Stone Cold (Summerslam 2001)

Kurt Angle vs Benoit

His best match ever was

Kurt Angle vs Undertaker vs The Rock.

I've mentioned it before: I haven't watched too much WWE in recent years but what I've seen, it's definately...

1. Kurt Angle vs. Steve Austin (SS 01, an awesome technical/brawl with GREAT psychology and storytelling)

2. Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit (RR 03, An amazing display of pure technique and drama)

3. Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit (Unforgiven, Not as good as RR 03, but still a very well-executed match)

While it wasn't one of his great matches, you gotta have a soft spot for the moment that Hulk Hogan tapped.

I'd say the No Mercy 2002 tag match. It was awesome and all four worked well together.

His best singles match would be Vs Benoit at the 2002 Unforgiven (I thought it was better than the WMX7 and the JD 2/3 Falls and all their other matches).

I must have been one of the few that thought the Rumble match was vastley overrated. It was good but Kurt no sold the leg and didn't seem to follow in the neck angle that Benoit was setting up later. And of course they repeated the predictable ankle lock/crossface chain sequences, it was fast paced though but it it was very similar to what they have been doing for quite a while. It had a really good ending though. I think I like his match with Austin at SS 2001 a bit more because it was better paced and the psychology was much better, despite the poor ending. The No Mercy tag comes in second to that.

i'd hardly call the crossface/anklelock reversals "predictable." that spot grew a lot in form from unforgiven to the rumble. do a side-by-side comparison, and it really looks like they've learned from the last match, they use new ways to counter & each tries new ways to get his own hold on.

the trading germans sequence was predictable, sure (although they did try to change it up a bit). but not the crossface/anklelock sequence.
