Guest mach7 Report post Posted May 20, 2003 We got a peek at the new Wrestlemania XIX game for the GameCube at THQ's E3 booth. One of the big new features added in this edition of Wrestlemania is location-specific damage. This feature allows you to focus attacks on your opponent's arm or leg, and the game will reflect this by causing the wrestler to hold his damaged arm or even to limp, if you've done enough damage to a leg. This adds a new layer of strategy as well, as doing an armbar to an opponent with a gimpy arm may cause him to tap out earlier than normal. The game's story mode adds some role-playing elements to Wrestlemania XIX. As you go through the single-player game, you'll earn money that you can use at the shop zone to buy upgrades for your wrestler (strength, stamina, speed, and other attributes), as well as new costumes. The host of the shop zone is none other than the lovely Stacy Keibler of WWE fame. THQ was also happy to point out that the old grapple system from No Mercy will return in Wrestlemania XIX, allowing players to do two kinds of grapples--weak and strong. Weak grapples let you do more quick-hitting moves by pressing in any direction and pressing A or B. The strong grapple maneuvers let you choose from eight different, harder-hitting moves. Counters using the R and L buttons are also present in the game--one button is for countering strikes and another is for breaking out of grapples. Presentation has also been a point of emphasis in XIX. Each wrestler in the game gets his own special entrance video, complete with music and movies playing in the background as you make your way into the arena. We watched as Hollywood Hogan entered with Hendrix tunes announcing his presence. Finally Wrestlemania XIX will include blood, a feature which was nixed from the last version of the game. With up to four player multiplayer capability, Wrestlemania XIX's improved features should make it an attractive game for GameCube wrestling fans when it's released this fall. We'll have more information on Wrestlemania XIX as it becomes available. Sweet!

Guest Sakura Report post Posted May 20, 2003 The game is being made by Yukes. It will not be No Mercy II. They used this same BS hype of "it will be back to the AKI game roots" with the last title....
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted May 20, 2003 I will play it when it comes out. If I like it, if the NM-style system is back, if I can customize my buttons how I like them, I'll buy it (assuming I decide to get a Cube). If it blows, I shan't spend money on it. Guest Aero Report post Posted May 21, 2003 I don't think it says it in the article above, but WM XIX is supposed to feature both a season mode (mentioned) AND that Revenge Mode, which is the one where Vinnie Mac is holding you down or something, so you have to sabatage his company by completing missions, such as blowing up his yacht, I heard. I've seen the screens of Undertaker and Hogan beating down security backstage. I was a little skeptical of Revenge Mode when I first heard about it a month or two ago, but since XIX's supposed to have both a season and Revenge, tell me you won't have fun in Revenge... in between going through season and playing the game, of course! Bottom line, XIX sounds like it will most definitely be an improvement over last years WM game. I'll most likely pick it up.

Guest Big McLargeHuge Report post Posted May 21, 2003 Doing specials by pressing A and B together sucks big time. Just use the fucking z button. If there was one purpose to that out of place nudge, it's to perform your special in an Aki wrestling game. Other than that can't wait. I WILL be renting it before I buy it, though. If I buy it at all.

Guest mach7 Report post Posted May 21, 2003 They've never said it will be No Mercy II. They've NEVER said that any of these games WOULD be No Mercy II and from what I can remember this is the first time that THQ has announced that the No Mercy GRAPPLE SYSTEM is being used in a Yukes game. The Dames 0 Report post Posted May 21, 2003 Grapple System + Great Graphics + Reversing Finishers = Goodness. Expand the CAW feature and now we're talkin. Still, it's a rental before a purchase. Dames

Guest Lightning Flik Report post Posted May 21, 2003 Doing specials by pressing A and B together sucks big time. Then how do you steal your opponent's finisher? You can't. Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame. No not lame. Lame is for a poorly utilized addition that does nothing for the product. Hencely, because it's not in the game this would be the appropriate phrase: BULLSHIT~! Guest mach7 Report post Posted May 21, 2003 Still, it's a rental before a purchase. Ugh, definitely. Especially after reading this bit about the story mode over at IGN. IGN talking about playing the game at E3... We also got our hands on a first demo of the story mode, which lets players fight through real world settings to destroy Vince McMahon's evil empire. Our romp took place in a construction site complete with wooden planks tied together with steel beams and bolts. We took controlled the Hulk as beefy construction workers arrived one at a time to beat us down and toss us to our death. Thankfully, our mad WWE skills sent the five chumps tumbling to their demise as we wore them down with hefty blows and then stomped on their fingertips as they gripped the beams for dear life. We felt no remorse. I think this constitutes the word "lame" for sure. I thought they had done away with this dumbass idea of a storymode? Ugh...

So IGN proclaims that the Storymode and the Revenge Mode are one in the same. Yet, we've been told they aren't. So who is right? I'll tend not to believe a word IGN says, thanks. Reminds me of that Gameboy game from a few years ago where you had to rescue Stephanie. *shudders*
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted May 21, 2003 I could sit here and say that I'll rent it first, but i ALWAYS say that, but end up buying the games the day that they're released. I'm so weak-willed.
Guest Jobber of the Week Report post Posted May 21, 2003 Jesus christ guys, read what was said about this in the E3 thread still on page 1. Here, I'll copy and paste: (EARLIER POST BEGIN) IGN has a huge developer interview up. They talk about how they've added strike and grapple counters, and strong and weak grapples to the front and back. Then the talk about the much-crapped-on single player story (the thing where you demolish Vince's cars, beat on rent-a-cops, etc.) Guy says they included this because "One of our criticisms from last year was that we didn't have a compelling single player experience, so we listened to our consumers and everybody really wants to take the action outside of the ring. It's great to fight in the ring, it's great to fight your friends in the ring. That's true to programming, but hey, this is a video game. Let's do something fresh, let's do something new. (...) This is a very unique WWE storyline full of turns and twists and double-crosses with the usual likes of Vince and Stephanie with environments like a construction site, a shipping port, a parking lot, a shopping mall. Things that feel alive, that you can throw your opponents through." They talk about how they've mixed WWE match types to the storylines "You know Royal Rumble, where you have to throw your opponent over the rope? Well, in the construction site, which is a multi-level construction site with an environment you can roam around, where you fight construction workers depending on your mission, you have to throw them over the platform to the lower level to knock them out. Similar to a Royal Rumble where you throw them over the top ropes." It definitely looks better in motion than in pictures.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll rent those as well, since I spent all my money/store credit on purchasing my GameCube. And speaking of GC related items, what are the best kinds of memory cards out there for the Cube?
