Guest Flyboy Report post Posted June 9, 2003 You're also very bias toward older rock, rock and roll, and the like... therefore, your opinion is bias and moot. (Not that I'm taking up for her or anything.)
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted June 9, 2003 I'm not attacking anyone in general, but what's the point in bitching about a artist in a music genre you don't like or care about. Bitching about them is bad enough, but taking the time to hate someone from a genre you don't like is even worse.

Guest El Satanico Report post Posted June 9, 2003 Oh yeah I know the thread is asking for opinions, but still you can say "I don't like her" without the venom laced posts some post on their hatred of someone in a genre they dislike. I mean hell I have no great love for American pop either, but I just ignore the artists I can't stand.
Guest justsoyouknow Report post Posted June 9, 2003 I LOVE Avril Lavigne. I have ever since I heard Complicated. I play her music all the time and am listening to her SNL performance of 'I'm With You' right now. ... Is that the Metallica song she sang at that Icon special? I never heard it so I'm just wondering. No offense Bob, but you make my head hurt. ...Can anyone else see Bob standing outside of an Avril appearance with a little tiny tie and Dickies pants, with a homemade sign, screaming his head off? I can. It makes me smile.

I mean hell I have no great love for American pop either, but I just ignore the artists I can't stand. what's the fun in just saying "i don't like her"? the real fun on a message board comes from exaggerating your opinion and making the english language your bitch as you sink your rhetorical incisors into the topic at hand. that's why the CE folder is so much fun: everyone who argues there, argues passionately. all wishy-washy comments & no fire make TSM a dull board. You're also very bias toward older rock, rock and roll, and the like... therefore, your opinion is bias and moot. (Not that I'm taking up for her or anything.) that oversimplifies things quite a bit. first, one can still like individual artists IN a genre while disliking that genre: i hate country but i love johnny cash, i'm not a big fan of jazz but i love miles davis. though she's in a genre, she can still be judged on her individual merits. second, the main criticism of avril more or less seems to be that she's bland & generic. you can apply this criticism whether you like the genre or not. i like rock as a genre, but i can still point to bands IN that genre that make me puke for being generic. i hate pop music, but i can still point to artists IN that genre that i love for not being generic. Guest Michael Joel Benoit Report post Posted June 10, 2003 I voted yes. I've liked Avril since I saw the "Complicated" video for the first time on MuchMusic last July. And I've had a crush on her since I saw her at the MTV Video Music Awards last August. She said on a t.v. special I saw last night on ABC Family that she doesn't consider herself punk but more of a "Rocker chick" because she "likes to rock out sometimes." I downloaded her CD and enjoyed it but I HATE "Sk8er Boi" also. I do enjoy her music, I think she has a nice voice live also. I plan on seeing her in concert the next time she's in New York. And she's hot. My future wife.

Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 10, 2003 Ever really look at the lyrics of the songs that you listened to growing up...not a pretty sight. Well, my mom and dad had me listening to bands like Pink Floyd, Renaissance, The Doors, and The Who when I was a kid. However, when I listen to some of the typical 80s stuff that I loved as a kid, the lyrics are nothing special. Well, except for Prince. My dad had an INCREDIBLE record collection that I was into as soon as I could work a turntable. Early favorites were mostly stuff with cuss words or rude lyrics, so The Mothers of Invention and Procol Harum were instant hits with me. I remember liking Zeppelin a lot, and Cream. Then I found an album in there while rooting around, looked at the cover, thought it was awesome..put it on, and sat in amazement of the coolest fucking thing in the universe, Black Sabbath's first album. Granted, with every top-notch album, there was stuff like latter-day Jethro Tull, Styx, 80's Kiss, and really cheesy shit like David Essex and the solo material the guy from T-Rex did. Overall though, the good far outweighed the bad.
LaParkaYourCar 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2003 I think it's a test of a girl's true beauty if she still looks good without makeup. I have met quite a few girls who looked good without makeup. Avril's non makeup to makeup look is so drastically different that it makes it hard for me to find her pretty. Her music is okay. Someone said she claimed to not be punk. Problem is in another interview she'll say the exact opposite. Either she's stupid, wishy washy, or just toked out of her mind.

Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted June 11, 2003 I can appreciate good pop (MJ, Kylie, Justin) but her songs are just not good pop at all. That ballad where she does that HORRENDOUS scream at one point is a blight on the face of himanity. At least Creed has comic value.
Guest two_tuff_toddy Report post Posted June 11, 2003 Avril Lavigne sucks is quite annoying and not that talented. Although she has nothing on the hotness of TATU I still find her to be pretty hot and she ranks #38 on my list of the 50 most attractive women today. However, my best friend is obsessed with her and it kills me because I have to listen to the shit when I ride around with him. He just went to Japan for 2 years so I guess I don't have to hear it for a while. Man, his taste in music has really plumeted since he joined the military. What the hell is that about? Guest the 1inch punch Report post Posted June 11, 2003 Problem with Avril Lavigne -When i first heard Sk8r Boi, it was a decent track, unlike most stuff at the time. That was ten months ago, and the fact that MTV still play it regulary today, has soured my opinion of her. As for attractiveness. I'd do her, but i havent had sex in three months so i'm desperate

I played everything from Surrealistic Pillow to Street Survivors and all things in between. Mom had some stuff I never liked, like Dan Fogelberg, but for the most part, our records OWNED. And what's wrong with 80s KISS? I like most of it, but then again, I'm a die hard KISS mark.
Guest phoenixrising Report post Posted June 12, 2003 Avril Lavigne..."I don't mind her much" is pretty much summing up my feelings toward her. I usually don't listen to pop, but the sound of her voice won't make me change the radio immediately when I'm flipping channels. About The Great Image Controversy, sure I'd imagine that a lot of celebrities aren't the people their image suggests they are. With Avril though, coming out and saying that she isn't a skater, doesn't play guitar, etc. hurts her more because her image is what distances her from other singers in her genre. Pop music is usually more about image than actual musical talent. Artists have to create a look that sets them apart from other artists. But if it becomes clear that the image is carefully crafted by producers, record execs, etc. then you get a major backlash. Compare the backlash Avril got when she admitted her image was more fiction than reality with Britney Spears and the backlash she gets for abandoning her virginal image for more of a grown up one. To sum up... Do I feel like throwing up at the sound of Avril's voice? No. Would I go out of my way to spend money on her music, or to listen to her song on the radio? No. And the most important question... Would I bang her? Sure...she's pretty cute...she gotta lay off the Mascara though.
