Guest HellSpawn Report post Posted June 10, 2003 I been readin some of your Polls and rants, and me, being an Old School fan , I want to know some opinions... Attitude Way back at the late 80s early 90s, most of the rock fans hate when they saw their idols playing samplers. Now, the bands from now, actually got a DJ on stage. A team up between, lets say, Vince Neil and Madonna or Bret Michaels and I dunno, some woman from that time. Now, one frontman marketed as Bad Ass, 1st, made some comments against Christina Aguilera and B. Spears, and later you can see both dancing and singin in an MTV show. Or Eminem and the same girls, 1st bashing them and later talkin as friends. OK Eminem is not a Nu metal. I know Michaels and Bon Jovi made a team up with Stevie Nicks, but for me, Nicks is more Rock than pop. How about videos? I still remember some videos from the Hair bands... Filled with hot women, fast cars, women, concert performances, women, funny stuff, women, backstage parties and well, women. Oh yeah, and some of the Heavy/Hard bands with some war images or conceptual stuff, like some Maiden videos. Now? And I pick some old school bands that actually are alive. Concert performance, FX, and.. hmmm.. ok some bands still have women, but less than before. Concerts and Best Selling Albums I remember tours that last for years, Scorpions, Maiden, Metallica, AC/DC, Kiss, Whitesnake. Now they play for a couple of months and disappear. And how about Albums? Several Multi Platinum Albums vs what? Platinum if they are lucky? Musicians C'mon! You cant tell me Bucket Head is better than Malmsteen, Vai or Rhoads. And dont make talk about Page and Blackmore. Ian F'n Gillan sand in Jesuschrist Superstar, even Paul Stanley played at the Phantom of the Opera (I think, not sure), whats the future for Marilyn Manson or the guy from Limp Biskit? OK, Now I want to hear what you guys fans of Nu Metal think or if I have some backup from Old School fans. Thanx. Peace.
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2003 C'mon! You cant tell me Bucket Head is better than Malmsteen, Vai or Rhoads. And dont make talk about Page and Blackmore. Buckethead, I think, *IS* better than all of them with the exception of possibly Vai. As far as Blackmore and Paige go, while they're highly influential in the world of Rock/Metal, they can't touch Buckethead, ESPECIALLY Jimmy Paige, who I consider to be the most overrated guitarist in the music business. Sure, he can write a damn good song/riff, but his playing, for the most part, is sloppy. Only in songs like "Stairway to Heaven" and "The Rover" does Paige sound good. Whenever he picks up the tempo, he gets very sloppy, which drags the song down. "Heartbreaker/Living Loving Maid" is the perfect example of this.
Rendclaw 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2003 Guitar playing does not have to be letter-precise to be *good*. while I mark for Satriani, Vai, Petrucci, et al, I also have a high appreciation for those who have a loose, flowing, and even sloppy style... players like Dave Murray, Hendrix and Slash. there are some great guitar players on the scene today, but the landscape of metal has changed so much today that I have hella difficulty relating to it. That's why my music preference is stuck in the 80s.... The Metal Age.
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted June 10, 2003 I was just watching Girls, Girls, Girls and thinking....damn, videos used to be so good. You know, videos today have hot girls in them as well, the problem is before your hand can even get to your dick they cut away.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted June 10, 2003 I'll take Buckethead over everyone listed other than Blackmore and Vai. Seriously, the guy can rip some shit.
Guest razazteca Report post Posted June 10, 2003 Tom Morello is better than CiCi Deville [/sarcasm] You know, videos today have hot girls in them as well, the problem is before your hand can even get to your dick they cut away. Well the nekkid girls are now in the pop videos.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted June 10, 2003 Sadly, I feel Morello IS better than CC DeVille. For one thing, DeVille just did generic rock riffs, while Morello tried to copy the sounds of turntables and synthesizers (successfully, might I add). I do believe a better rant is in order than just making vague points. No talk of vocal ability, lyrics, or overall musicianship, with the exception of the small Buckethead comment (and yes, as others have stated, Buckethead fucking rips). Also, hard rock/metal has always been rather testosterone/"I'll kick your ass" oriented, right? Where is that today? Kid Rock, Saliva, and Limp Bizkit seem to be the only "big" hard rock acts that know how to party anymore (I left out Andrew WK because he's mainstream, but not big). Guest razazteca Report post Posted June 10, 2003 This is like trying to compare tight spandex with baggy denim. They're so different that the whole argument is negated. Why not compare apples to oranges? Why not say that Rage Against the Machine was a band that had a guitar player that would work miracles with distortion and other guitar gimmicks. All CiCi did was dance around stage or in videos in cliche fashion. no hair > big hair I am also willing to say that Tom Morello is better than Eddie Van Halen in his ablity to get more unique sounds out of the guitar. Rendclaw 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2003 Um, raz... you need to put the crack pipe down. EVH was more of an innovator back in the late 70s, going right though the 80s. His style has been revered by anyone with enough coordination to do a scale run for the last 25 years. He set the table and the standard by which almost every other guitarist worthy of the name would be judged. While I think that Morello did some creative things with the guitar, his actual playing style is very simplistic. Case in point: I was bored one day and I was noodling around on the guitar when Guerilla Radio came on the tv. I had the song down cold in ten minutes, and I'm not all that good. I will say that sometimes indeed less is more, but saying that Morello was more inventive than EVH is a rather silly statement to make.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Report post Posted June 10, 2003 Morello did more with the guitar from a strictly creative standpoint. Van Halen was copied for years, and his influence is still felt today (two-fingered tapping anybody?). And you can DEFINITELY compare nu-metal and hair metal, as they both are only "metal" if you use Rolling Stone and Spin as your music news/opinions sources. Guest razazteca Report post Posted June 11, 2003 Well opinions vary, both are stand out guitar players and both will be remembered for what they did. And I still prefer Morello over Eddie Van Halen from a stylistic view.
Rendclaw 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2003 And you can DEFINITELY compare nu-metal and hair metal, as they both are only "metal" if you use Rolling Stone and Spin as your music news/opinions sources. Its a new generation of music, and I like i saw some kid say in a Metallica video, every generation will scorn the next, and their music. Aside from the bands using the same instruments to make their music, thats where any comparable notes end.
Guest Steviekick Report post Posted June 11, 2003 And you can DEFINITELY compare nu-metal and hair metal, as they both are only "metal" if you use Rolling Stone and Spin as your music news/opinions sources. Rolling Stone and Spin totally ignore the metal scene. They've pretty much never paid any attention to the Swedish metal scene that's brought us In Flames and Arch Enemy, as well as the north-east hardcore/metal scene like Shadows Fall, Hatebreed, God Forbid, Candiria, etc. These American bands are definitely the true definition of new metal, not some whiny raprock crap. Guest Steviekick Report post Posted June 11, 2003 I think the purest metal band is Motorhead, not any of the crappy 80s hair metal bands. Motorhead symbolizes the metal way: do it yourself, don't care about anyone/anything else, and be loud and hard. IMO, Buckethead is amazing. What seperates him from so many "guitar gods" is that he can play along with so many different things...his own music is totally out there, but he can do an awesome job as part of the new GNR and still shred aong with Bootsy Collins' PFunk stuff.
