Guest DARRYLXWF Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 Here's how it works. I'll put down either a band, song or album at the bottom and one of you have to give your opinion on it, once you do that, you put down a band, song or album (your choice) for the next person to answer. Band: The Moody Blues
Guest WrestlingDeacon Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 I find the Moody Blues to be overblown and pretenious for the most part. A mix of ELO's melancholy, lofty pop and Yes' overlong keyboard noodling that makes them kind of bland and full of themselves. I'll go with an album, Rolling Stones' Some Girls.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 I think next to Exile On Main Street, that Some Girls is the best Stones album. Killer riffs, good enough lyrics, and an overall great groove to the album. Artist: Faith No More
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 Had some decent tracks, but I feel Patton really expanded and got better afterwards with Fantomas, Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle, and his material with Dillinger. Song: Pink Floyd-"Echoes"
Guest mesepher Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 Song: Pink Floyd-"Echoes" Fantastic song... should never have been edited by seven~!!! minutes to put on some lousy 'greatest hits' package. Gilmour and Co. did a great job of playing this one on the Momentary Lapse tour... although it was only played a few times during the beginning since apparently Dave "didn't like the lyrics" album: Rush - Caress of Steel
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 I don't know Rush well, but I wanted to weigh in on the Moody Blues. They are the terrifying soundtrack of my childhood. For some reason, my dad's side of the family was really big into their live album from Red Rocks when that came out in the early 90's. We somehow ended up with two different copies of it, which meant there was basically one within listening distance no matter where you were in the house. This was like being stuck in a Russian gulag circa the early 20th century, except the soundtrack was "I know you're out there somewhere, in my wiiii-yiiii-iiiiildest dreams" instead of "Stay in your lines or we'll shoot you." I think I would have preferred the gulag.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 Fantastic song... should never have been edited by seven~!!! minutes to put on some lousy 'greatest hits' package. You've got to be shitting me. That would be like cutting off someone's legs from the shins down, and calling it a whole person.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 Oh yeah Oblivion, it's true. When The Floyd released Echoes, they cut out 7+ minutes of "Echoes." I mean, I could see if they did it to "Sine On You Crazy Diamond," but to do it to the TITLE TRACK is blasphemous.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 How exactly did they edit it? Just cut 7 minutes off the end? I remember seeing that when the compilation album came out and not really understanding why they'd bother to include it if they were going to cut it down. The very notion of a Floyd compilation album is kinda weird to me, because there's really no way to summarize a band whose output was so, so different across its career in two discs.
Guest Choken One Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 To get back on track... Disturbed-The Game
B. Brian Brunzell Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 They cut a bit off of the intro, and a bit out of the middle of the song(ya know, the weird screaming sounds that Waters made with the bass?), and I believe that a bit was taken off of the end as well.
Guest La Parka Es Mi Papa Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 Disturbed - The Game Incredibly generic and vanilla sounding, with a really irritating keyboard riff in the intro, adds up to me wanted to destroy my brother's copy of that fucking album. Album: The Pixies - Doolittle
Guest The Czech Republic Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 Finally, that picture is back! So, comment on Obscured By Clouds by Pink Floyd.
rising up out of the back seat-nuh Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 The Pixies: Dolittle GREAT album. I personally prefer it to their other albums. The second track (tame?) pisses me off though. Obscured by Clouds by the Floyd The worst Roger-era Floyd album. That about says it all. Band: The Mars Volta
Guest mesepher Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 Obscured by Clouds by the Floyd The worst Roger-era Floyd album. That about says it all. care to elaborate?
rising up out of the back seat-nuh Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 Obscured by Clouds by the Floyd The worst Roger-era Floyd album. That about says it all. care to elaborate? I would like to say, before I start, that this is purely subjective, so don't flame me. Please? The album has never grtabbed me in the way that most Floyd albums have. It comes across as a poor mans Dark Side in many ways. I appreciate that it was just before DSOTM, and it's not fair to compare it to that album, but at the same time it just sounds like theres something missing. The instrumentals suck in my opinion, and the whole thing doesn't seem to flow the way that the other albums do, maybe because its a soundtrack. Then again I'm not a massive fan of Dark Side either, so maybe thats why. Having said that, I've heard some people speak highly of it, and if someone can convince me of it's benefits I'd be more than willing to give it another chance.
Guest Choken One Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 No song/band to be commented on... "Highway to Hell" ACDC
Guest INXS Posted June 13, 2003 Report Posted June 13, 2003 "Highway to Hell" is what a hard rock song should sound like. The blue print of a hard rock song. Great guitar riffs, great structure, powerful/fun lyrics that make you want to shout along. The song just has incredible energy. "Highway to Hell" is what makes you excited and proud to be a rock fan. "Authority Song" John Mellencamp
Guest WrestlingDeacon Posted June 14, 2003 Report Posted June 14, 2003 "Authority Song" is a very catchy pop tune with a good hook of a chorus. It's a lot like "Born in the USA" where you kind of get lost in the groove and don't listen to the words. However, I think the message of the song is a little over simple and childish in the presentation. "I fight authority, authority always wins." Pretty cut and dried. I like Mellencamp's moodier and darker stuff than his blatant pop work, so I'll throw up what I believe to be an underrated Mellencamp album to discuss: Album: Big Daddy by John Mellencamp
Guest two_tuff_toddy Posted June 14, 2003 Report Posted June 14, 2003 "Authority Song" John Mellencamp I really dislike this song. It's probably because I hate everything that Menstralcramp has come out with. Very generic music. Band- Talking Heads
Guest redbaron51 Posted June 14, 2003 Report Posted June 14, 2003 While I'm not the biggest fan on John Mellencamp, Bid Daddy has always strucked a chord with me, musically, and lyrically. To me, Big Daddy is Mellencamp's best work, period. Here's one. Alice In Chains: Dirt.
Guest Harry Hood Posted June 14, 2003 Report Posted June 14, 2003 Talking Heads - the best 80's band out there. Hand's down. So many good songs like C&P, Burnin' down the house etc...Plus stop making sense is a great alubm, one of hte better live albums out there. Greatful deade, American Beuaty
Guest two_tuff_toddy Posted June 14, 2003 Report Posted June 14, 2003 "Alice In Chains: Dirt." FOr some reason when this album came out I never found it to be that good although I have been hearing it a lot lately and I have to say it's fucking AWESOME. This album alone makes them one of my 15 fav. bands. Rooster is one of the better songs I've ever heard. This is probably the best album from that time period although I am partial to Nirvana. Band - Throbbing Gristle
Guest two_tuff_toddy Posted June 14, 2003 Report Posted June 14, 2003 "Greatful deade, American Beuaty" Decent effort although really middle of the road for them in my opinion. I'm partial to Shakedown Stree and Skeletons From The Closet. Band - Ween
B. Brian Brunzell Posted June 14, 2003 Report Posted June 14, 2003 Ween has always amused me with their music. Good tunes, good album covers. Album: Here Comes the Zoo- Local H
Guest DARRYLXWF Posted June 14, 2003 Report Posted June 14, 2003 I really like this album. Rock & Roll Professionals is my favourite track, and the new drummer seems pretty good, though I'm not sure whether he's better than the previous one. Oh and 'What would you have me do' is starting to really grow on me. Band: Helloween
B. Brian Brunzell Posted June 14, 2003 Report Posted June 14, 2003 Very good band. Great musicianship in Helloween. The vocals are ALWAYS splendid. Song: "Out on the Tiles"- Led Zeppelin
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted June 14, 2003 Report Posted June 14, 2003 Don't lie to the people, Brian. Helloween is the most horrible cheesy band in the universe not named "King Diamond." The vocals are girlier than Rob Halford after he's been slipped a mickey... And if by good musicianship, you mean overblown "epic yet dark and spooky" textures, mixed with cheeseball masturbatory solos, and an ever-galloping drummer, you've hit the nail on the head. Awful awful band to avoid at all costs, unless you LOVE power metal for some reason.

You're probably referring to their first singer and drummer, but their 2000 release 'The Dark Ride' is a really good album (power metal standards). BUT, every member in the band hated making it for some reason (perhaps it was because it wasn't "happy happy haloween' enough), and the ones who didn't, were fired. Anyway, I would recommend taking a look at the album if you have no problems with power metal.....especially the title track, if i could fly and the departed. Out on the tiles: One of the rockers from III, and a pretty good one. Has a nice riff and a good bass beat. Also appears to be a straight out love song. Not bad at all Song: Pink Floyd - High Hopes

May I just first say that I love, admire, wish to stalk, respect, and frankly am a little attracted to this man. ahem, anyway. I'm going to answer the pink floyd song by making a fairly general statement about their songs. I find them to be good for background sounds. Nothing that really grabs, nor can I ignore it. Something along those lines anyway. Anathema - Judgement.
