What's the best movie of the year so far?

I haven't seen a lot of movies this year (since most of them are crap), but of the movies I have seen, I'd say that X2 is the best. Had a good plot, good actors, (espcially Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler!) and very enjoyable and entertaining.

It was just a fantastic cinematic experience. The ultimate popcorn flick.

both the 25th Hour and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind were in limited release late last year so that they would be up for oscar consideration.

 

Best movie this year is probably Better Luck Tomorrow.

 

Not that it matters, as the fall season is when most of the movies worthy of critical acclaim are released anyway

It's been a good year for movies. I like more than most, but the only movie I saw that bored me was Daredevil.

 

Head of State was surprisingly awesome too.

4) Shanghai Knights (Owen Wilson mark, obviously)

What's a shame is that most people don't get the subtlety of Owen Wilson's humor and all the historical references in Shanghai Knights. When my friend and I saw it there were several instances when we were the only ones laughing. Most notably some of the Revolutioniary War and White Chapel/Jack the Ripper references. I have to mention that the look on Owen Wilson's face when he's jumping up and down during the pillow fight and he sees the old man is PRICELESS.

 

So as far as the best movie so far this year, I'd have to go with either

 

- Shanghai Knights

or

- Better Luck Tomorrow

I really need to see A Mighty Wind. I love Best in Show. My favorite part is when the announcer just looks at his co-announcer and says, "How much do you think I can bench press?" right in the middle of announcing. I lost about half a mouthful of Coke on that one.

Matrix Reloaded. The misunderstood sci-fi masterpiece of the year (carrying on the tradition of such films as Dark City & Minority Report). It did by far the number one thing a movie like this should do, make you want to march up to the box office and buy a ticket to the next one. Revolutions has a long road ahead of it in order to surpass this one, something that Return of the Jedi failed miserably at.

I'd also have to say Matrix: Reloaded. It far exceeded my expectations, and once again lowered my opinion of the general populace of urban Miami, the majority of which said it wasn't that good. Which made me realize most people who didn't enjoy it either didn't like the first one all that much either, or liked the first one because OMG ACTION~! OMG LOOK HE'S DODGING BULLETZ HE DID HE DO THAT?!!!>?!?!1!~! and didn't grasp the premise or reason WHY they could do all that.

 

Frequently heard when regarding TM:R is "oh, he can fly now" in a condescending, sarcastic manner. Uh, as if he shouldn't? He's a hacker who figured out he can pretty much do whatever he can in a virtual reality dream world (to put it in simplistic terms), so why the fuck not, eh?

If a movie gets a NY/LA release at the end of December so it can be considered for the awards I don't count it as a movie from that year.

 

I know that may be wrong but I actually have to have an opportunity to see it for me to consider it being from that year. Gangs of New York, Catch Me..., and Pianist all had that opportunity so they are 2002.

 

25th Hour had a nationwide release on January 10th and Confessions had a nationwide release on Jan 24th. Therefore I consider them both to be 2003 releases (although yes, technically wrong).

 

Hence, they are the best two movies this year so far. Also, add Narc (Jan 10th) to that list to round out the top three...

Finding Nemo, X2, and Matrix Reloaded are the three best that I have seen.

X2 improved on the first film IMO and was a really excellent blockbuster. Matrix Reloaded wasn't quite as good but was still entertaining nonsense (action scenes were great but the script was pretentious and meaningless)

 

I've got to chuck my hat in as another Shanghai Knights mark, the first 20 minutes left me a bit unsure but it soon kicked in to being a totally entertaining and funny film. Chan & Wilson just look like they're having fun on screen and it translates to the viewer, its corny and silly but good natured charm and genuine wit about it to. Good, undemanding stuff. Phone Booth was really smartly done and featured a smart performance by Colin Farrell but like Schumacher's Panic Room its not exaxtly a film to return to more than once despite being expertly paced and crafted.

 

Not a 2003 release but the best film i've seen myself this year is undoubtedly Donnie Darko. Funny, moving and thought provoking, nothing i've seen for a few years has grabbed me in such a powerful way.

A) I didn't like Matrix
