Son of the Mask

Recommended Posts

Son of the Mask is the sequel to the 1994 film The Mask. Jim Carrey will not reprise his role. This installment follows a cartoonist named Tim Avery whose son who receives the powers of the trouble-making mask. Larry Guterman directs from a script by Lance Khazei, Chuck Russell, and Michael Leeson.

Since filming will begin on July 21st, 2003, the credits may change. But, according to IMDB, Jamie Kennedy will play Tim Avery. The only other cast member listed is Alan Cumming, which is of course, how I found the movie in the first place. Since he's in it, I know I'll probably rent the movie, but honestly, is there even a need for a sequel?!

To answer your question: no, there is absolutely no need for a sequel, as is the case 99% of the time. Everyone knows there have only been like four or five worthy sequels to any movie ever, those being Godfather II, The Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, The Color of Money, and X2 (though I'd argue that Matrix Reloaded belongs on that list, but no way in hell am I ever bringing that up on this board).

Anyways, don't get too freaked out by this news. A sequel to The Mask has been in the works since the original film's opening week, so it might not even happen.

EDIT: I forgot the Indiana Jones sequel Temple of Doom, Road Warrior (the sequel to Mad Max), and both sequels to the original Evil Dead, which are Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. Okay, so I was a bit over-critical. I still stand by my belief that a sequel to a movie like The Mask can in no way be a good thing.

god damnit why?

Because Hollywood can't make established stars on their own, so they have to rip off from another good actor with lame impersonators [see: Dumb and Dumberer].

I like how they named it like Universal named sequels to their classic horror movies.

Besides it's only a sequel in name. It's not furthering the story of the first, so it shouldn't be considered a true sequel.

I know that it's technically a sequel, but in reality it only has the name and the mask in common with the original.

I'd have to quibble with The Color of Money and Army od Darkness. What wastes of time those flicks were!

I'll only rent it because my fave actor is in it.

can we look forward to a sequel of Lair Lair as well someday?

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised. Hell, why not make Son of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective while they're at it?

Another fuckin' sequel...

This from the person who is freakin' obsessed with X2.

Um...I liked the idea of more mask movies. I comic was differant and a lot darker than the movie. I think thats the way to go. Jamie Kennedy can eat donkey balls! Make Alan Rickman the MASK! Or at least someone cool, I'm so sick of this new breed of wafer thin vanilla brats, like Ashton Kutcher.

GOD I FUCKING HATE ASHTON KUTCHER!

I see nothing wrong with a sequel to Get Shorty provided it's based on another of Elmore Leonard's books. He's had so few books adaptated correctly (Get Shorty, Jackie Brown) that I'm salivating for another one done right!

They could make 100 sequels to Scooby Doo and they'd all do well. The rest are better off not made.

Color of Money I can understand, even if I don't agree, but Army of Darkness fucking owned ass. It still wasn't as good as Evil Dead II, but it was close.

If the Mask was dark and super gory like the comic book it would be good... not that this movie will be.

I'd take Empire Strikes Back off the list of good sequels, seeing how it's part of a series and not a true sequel. I can think of a few other worthy sequels... I don't think most would agree with me, however, so I won't bother naming them.

AoD is greatness just like DTHOC said, it's not as good as Evil Dead 2, but it is an awesome film.

I hope that because Dumb and Dumberer bombed, they'll cancel it, but Son of the Mask has some potential at least to be decent.

The problem with Dumb and Dumberer was that it was a prequel to a movie that was character driven by two actors who couldn't be duplicated even if Hollywood tried to clone them.

Son of the Mask can be a completely seperate movie from the original ending with the Mask getting tossed into the river under the bridge where Stanley Ipkiss finds it in the original...

My only beef with it is that they could at least try and come out with an original idea as opposed to ripping off a movie thats been out for 8 years and the main reason fans liked it was because Jim Carrey played the part well.

Im waiting for them to mess up Ace Ventura. It wasn't bad enough that there was a real sequel, they'll probably drag out a prequel out of it as well.

Be prepared for more drek like this for several more years, until some people can actually get their original ideas pushed through... though it will always be about money in hollywood, so why take a chance on something new and fresh, when you can rehash something on the strength of what came before it, regardless of whether what you're putting out is good or not?

If they have to make a sequel to Scooby Doo, it should have been called Scooby Duex.

So we're trashing the movie before a single frame has been shot, eh?

I dunno. if they're going to continue with The Mask, I'd rather they go to the comics for it. The comics with the Mask being passed around between these friends were great, what I got to read of them.

heck, a friend gained his nickname (Snacky) because of those comics.

eh...Scooby Doo is something that can be sequeled numerous times and not be that bad. There's endless amounts of "monsters" they could fight, so it's not that big of a deal.

Besides it's just Scooby Doo, who cares if they sequel the hell out of the franchise it's not like it's going to hurt something of value.

To each their own. I like Evil Dead and I LOVE Evil Dead 2 but AoD did very little for me. I liked it even less the latest time I saw it.
