Guest Evolution Report post Posted July 7, 2003 2004 was the year for the first wave of SWF folk to enter, as the amateur draft took place on June 1st. The first to be drafted was Alex Zenon, who was taken in the 2nd round by Anaheim as the 41st overall pick. David Hunter was next, drafted by Houston as the 83rd pick. Two picks later, John Duran was drafted to Oakland. Early in the 4th round, R.J. Frost went to the Brew Crew in Milwaukee. As the last pick in the 4th round, Albert Katowski was chosen by the defending NL West Champions in the Arizona Diamondbacks. Oakland picked up another SWFer in Chris Card late in the 5th round, and Michael Craven was quick to follow as a pick for the Twins in Minnesota. Oakland isn't done, though, as they take Markus Cirillo in the 6th round. Finally, Arizona struck again and drafted Charlie Matthews as the last pick in the 7th round to round out the first wave of the SWF to infiltrate the MLB. Injuries were fairly common among the SWFers, though most were minor injuries. Cirillo went down with a stiff shoulder for 5 days a mere 25 days after he was drafted. Zenon had the most bizarre injury with a swollen ear in early July, but came back in a week. Duran strained his hamstring and was out for a week in early August. Hunter went down a day later with a bruised foot, but was back in a week as well. The biggest injury goes to Craven, however, who experienced back spasms towards the end of June and was out for a whopping 7 weeks. As the weeks went by, it became clear who would become a big star in a short time and who would need a little work. Frost was the first to get the "bump" to AA in a mere 41 games, sporting a .335 batting average with 11 doubles. However, Katowski got his big break with the injury of first baseman Jeff Bagwell. With no other healthy first basemen, the call was given to bring Katowski up to the big leagues. His stint in the majors lasted 13 games, as he batted .302, averaging about a hit a game until Bagwell healed and Katowski was sent back to the minors. Chris Card brought the power and the speed, finishing the season with 19 stolen bases and 9 homeruns, along with a batting average of .304. When Craven wasn't injured, he wasn't doing so well. Craven finished his 39 game season with a .248 average and 3 homeruns with 9 stolen bases and 38 Ks. Duran got off to a slow start, but picked things up and ended with an average of .305 with 20 stolen bases and 6 homeruns. Hunter, on the other hand, blasted out of the gates and was doing well, but crashed towards the end and finished with a .251 average, 6 homeruns, and a couple of triples. Charlie Matthews' middle name might be strikeout after his performance in 2004. Finishing with an amazing 102 hits, he also managed to strike out 102 times. His amount of hits gave him a .302 average to finish the season, but overall, Charlie was in whiff city for most of the season. As far as pitchers went, Zenon > Cirillo. Cirillo finished with a 2-5 record with 7 no-decisions. His ERA was at a chunky 5.60, allowing 88 hits in only 70 innings. Zenon finished with a 6-2 record with 7 no-decisions as well. However, his ERA was a slim 1.69, striking out 82 and allowing 77 hits in 90 innings. As 2005 begins, the first wave will attempt to continue to move on up, and new prospects will enter the picture for a chance to become the next big thing.
