Eddie Vedder's cover of "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" off the "I Am Sam" Soundtrack is pretty good.

Heck half the covers on that album are pretty good.

Yeah, that reminds of of when Alien Ant Farm covered "Smooth Criminal"

is this the new gimmick for a current pop-punk-metal band? Cover an 80's song?

It's not a new thing and it's not just the mtv friendly punk bands doing it. Modern punk bands have been doing covers for awhile.

I have several. The punk covers of tv theme songs rule.

NEW? Are you nuts?

Don't you remember Limp Bizcut doing "Faith"? Or Fear Factory doing "Cars"? Or Coal Chamber or whoever the fuck it was doing "Shock the Monkey" with Ozzy?

It's an old gimmick, dude.

I think Mike Muir summed it up best in the Suicidal Tendencies track, "Pop Songs":

"Every day there is another

Band that got big by playing a cover"

Disturbed's cover of Shout (Tears For Fears) actually made me like them.

and Metallica doing Killing Time (Sweet Savage)and Turn the Page (Joe Cocker), Iced Earth doing Transylvania and the Trooper (Iron Maiden) are excellent covers.

H2O did "Like a Prayer" and it's pretty swank. And that's all I have to add.

That Shadows Fall cover of "Welcome to the Machine" is an absolute hatchet job. Needless chugging, they lose the whole mechanical feel to the song, and the contrast with the acoustic guitar along with that. It's just them playing relatively the same notes. Awful cover song. I hate it.

How bad is it compared to the Foo Fighters cover of "Have A Cigar"?

Marilyn Manson - I Put A Spell On You(CCR)

The original is by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, not CCR.

Manson also does a swank cover of Suicide Is Painless, the MASH theme song.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds' album Kicking Against the Pricks is an all-covers album, and ranks among their very finest records.

oh man... have a cigar was horrendous...

and for the Ozzy and Dweezil thing... well, D is a Zappa, so by definition, it HAS to be good. At least the guitar playing, anyways.

I know Pearl Jam pulls a lot of covers out, so I'll stay away from their more recognizable ones.

Pearl Jam - "Redemption Song" (Bob Marley)

Pearl Jam - "Let My Love Open the Door" (Pete Townshend)

It's pretty good shit, I think. Primus does really tight covers, for the most part.

If you've never heard Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade's live set where they covered the ENTIRETY of Floyd's Animals, DO SO IMMEDIATELY.
