Yeah, I'm from Melbourne too Darryl.

Nah, Ash aren't huge down here YouthNAsia. I'm not a big fan, nothing too special there.

Ah, 1_inch_punch, are you aware that The Vines are Australian?! They're pretty big down here, not sure where you got that from!! I was considering getting Highly Evolved, but there are too many required CDs before them.

B. Brian Brunzell - I listened to Devin Townsend - Material. Pretty cool. Different. I think I'll check out some more stuff of his. Nice one.

CoreyLazarus - Yeah, I checked out Demise of Sanity. Perhaps the quality wasn't great, but I wasn't really blown away. It was good, but I probably liked Type O & Devin better.

I listened to The First Noble Truth by Shadows Fall, and I liked the kinda punky guitar, but the unintelligable death metal vocals just wrecked it. Pity really.

Cheers though.

Kotz - Body Parts was a bit of alright. Pretty all over the place. Not sure I could listen to a full CD of it. Good enough for government work, to borrow a phrase. Oh and by the way, something I've been meaning to tell you for a while, to add to your fandom, Kylie is really cool in person, my best mate's dad is her manager. She's just as hot in person also.

Well, I promised I'd throw out a few Aussie tracks for people to give a try to. Don't know if any of these bands have tried to break into the US, but here's a couple for now. If I'm asked for more I'm more than happy to recommend more.

Powderfinger - On My Mind (It's their newest, but a lot of their stuff is pretty good)

Grandville - Walking In Circles

Motor Ace - Death Defy or Carry On

I'll assume everyone over there is familiar with Silverchair but if not, give Freak or Pure Massacre a listen

1 inch punch likely got confused with Strokes, Hives and the other shitty glorified Garage junk...

It was seen as pretty odd for The Vines to get big in the US and then come home after that, but I wouldn't say we turned on them. Highly Evolved sold well down here, they played Big Day Out and got a great reaction. I'd say there would be some in the Australian Music Industry who would have been incredibly jealous they'd cracked the US without working through Australia first though.

Even though it appears my suggestions are being ignored, I'll add a couple more anyway because I just thought of it before

Palladium - Butterflies

Grinspoon - Chemical Heart or Just Ace or Don't Change

I won't lie, I like "Body Parts" only because it's so different from the rest of their stuff and because it gets my girl into stripping mode. Something about it just turns her on like mad.

The rest of JLC's stuff is pedestrian.

And by the way, I hate you. And your friend. And your friend's father. Damn all of you.

Grinspoon also sang "Snap your fingers, snap your neck", Justin Credible's ECW entrance music.

Another aussie band that impress me is the Sick Puppies.

Leonard Nimoy - "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins"

I know what you're thinking, but it's not the actor just a band using his name.

"Snap your fingers, snap your neck"

That's Prong, unless Grinspoon covered it.

Grinspoon covered it for ECW. Justin Credible used to use the Grinspoon cover. That way, it was cheaper for ECW to get the rights to use it.

Yeah, I know Ween. I'm very underwhelmed. I've seen this Velvet Underground mentioned about the place. I'm Kazaa-ing for them presently.

EDIT: UGGGHHH  Strewth mate, I said I don't want any of that artsy, indie bullshit. My God, what did I do to deserve being exposed to that??? I have been aurally abused. I don't want to be lulled into some kind of off-key trance, I want to be entertained. Mate, how can you listen to that tripe? Genuinely one of the worst pieces of "music" I have ever had the misfortune to be exposed to. Thank you for trying though.

We're 1 for 4 thus far here people. Impress me.

Next.

dude, calm down. VU (and ween for that matter) is very much an acquired taste, and is probably one of the ten most revered bands in the world now. they were always trying new things, and the stuff that sounds so different normally takes some getting used to. but it grows on you, and is ultimately far more rewarding than songs that are enjoyable to listen to simply because they're catchy (limp bizkit, et al). it requires some time and effort, but it IS worth it.

an easier way to get into them would probably be to start with their last album, 'loaded', and work backwards. it doesn't sound "artsy" or experimental at all, it just sounds like a really good rock band, and the focus is almost entirely on lou reed's songwriting (which is some of the best ever). reed's sing-song vocals, like bob dylans, don't technically sound good, but once you get down to it they ARE emotionally brilliant. "new age" and "sweet jane" are the best jumping-on points.

See, to me, just because it's different, doesn't mean it's good. I just don't buy into the whole, "noone else sounds like us therefore we must be hip and alternative". No one would sound like me if I tried to sing, and that's because I'd be crap. Whatever that song you recommended was, sounded off-key and dreadful. If there are people that will listen to that simply because it's "experimental" good luck to them. Different strokes.....

There were a lot of reports in the NME last year that Australian fans turned on The Vines for getting big without paying their dues.

What he said, sorry for the confusion

i never said it was only good because it was different. i'm saying the sound takes some getting used to. experimenting is only half of the equation, and the other half is actually getting the experiment right; and most music fans & bands would agree that the velvets did indeed get it right. you listened to it once (if i understand correctly), then immediately dismissed it because it didn't fit your current definition of good music. i'm saying give it a chance, and you may be surprised & find your definition of good music can change. music that's atonal or abrasive can still be beautiful, and the best music almost NEVER sounds good on the first 2 or 3 listens, and to call it crap after that much or less is lazy and ignorant. it's like turning a movie off after the first 10 minutes, your judgment is skewed. ask around on the board, i doubt you'll find anyone familiar with the velvets and not like them. this is not just me spouting off pretentiously about how great this band is just because they sang off key, trust me. like i said, start from 'loaded' and work backwards if you think it's too weird, but don't just blow it off, cause it really is great music.

Check out the awesomeness of LOA yet?

god is correct

When i first listened to Velvet Underground I wasn't too impressed and wondered what the big deal was.

They definately do get better the more you listen to them.

Yeah, I'm listening to Words and Music again right now actually. I'm not the biggest fan of the vocal style, although, once again it's probably a little distorted through the computer. I like the guitar lines and drumwork though. Definitely worth more d/l-ing. Nice one. Seeing as I've given everything so far a try has anyone had a listen to any of the Aussie tracks yet??

You haven't even got the good ones yet...

Just wait until you get

"This Time" "Don't You(forget about me)" "Drained" and "River Runs Red"

Those will bring you down upon your knees...

^ Yep.

I recom. just about ANY LOA song from the R.R.R and Ugly Album...

I don't think I've listened to S.S.S in months...

I've now listened to This Time as well, I'm a fan of the music, as I said and I enjoy the vocals a littl emore each time I hear them. I now have 6 CDs to buy. Fuck. I do wish someone would listen to one of my Aussie tracks though......

Who says we aren't? Did you want us to say something?

I've known Grinspoon since CHAMPION and always liked them...Only Aussie Band (that i know of) I ever brought a album of...

Good Luck finding the LOA albums...Aside from S.S.S they are hard to find in remote locations like Aussieland...

Truthfully, I think you're better off just getting River Runs Red. Some folks like Ugly, most don't. RRR is a masterpiece, though.

gtd, I've been meaning to get some VU stuff, since I think I've heard one track of theirs ever. What's the weirdest thing they've ever written?

Speaking of weird shit, Nanks, you should check out Fantomas. It features Mike Patton of Faith No More fame. "Book 1: Page 7" is probably my favorite thing of theirs so far.

R.R.R is of course the masterpiece but Ugly works very well and it is almost comparable to R.R.R.

The entire River Runs Red album is untouchable.

However...

Ugly includes great songs like

"Don't You (Forget about me)"

"Other Side of the River"

"I regret"

"Lost at 22"

"Drained"

"Unstable"

"Fears"

The rest of the album doesn't work for me...

7 good-Great tracks out of 12=Great Album

The other songs aren't HORRIBLE but just not at the same level.

As for Soul Searching Sun

Aside from 3 great Caputo penned songs

"Heroin Dreams"

"My Mind is Dangerous"

"Angry Tree"

the rest of the Album can suck my dick...

The rest is Robert penned/Cowritten and you can CLEARLY tell the difference and it's not a good thing.

After you Set your mind free and embrace the darkness of Life of Agony...

Search for the Ultra-Rare Keith Caputo solo Album "Died Laughing". He shines as a Solo artist esp. with

"Honeycomb"

"New York City"

"Selfish"

as the stand out tracks...

It's completely different from the Dark shady feel that LOA presents and is poppy but in the good sense...

New York City and Honeycomb are great examples of keeping the same writing style but making a little lighter...

If you liked L.O.A because of the Music and not the lyrics and the vocals then you might not dig The solo work...since it doesn't put an heavy emphasis on the music and just let's the sting of Caputo's words float in the air crashing you into a dark deep yet positive void.

flat-out weirdest: "sister ray," "the gift," "european son." in that order.

best weird stuff: "venus in furs," "heroin," "i heard her call my name," "all tomorrow's parties."
