Say hello to Hef's 'Superbunnies'

Founder of Playboy and his famed centerfold girls will star in a new animated television series.

July 21, 2003: 1:31 PM EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stripperella, beware!

A unit of Playboy Enterprises Inc. (PLA: Research, Estimates) on Friday said it plans to develop an animated television series starring Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy magazine, and his famed centerfold girls in another move to introduce the Playboy brand to younger generations.

Hefner, an icon of the American sexual revolution, will be the mastermind behind a sexy, sophisticated squad of Playmates that fight the "enemies of the democracy" in "Hef's Superbunnies," the cartoon series to be developed by Stan Lee.

Lee, the godfather of comics, created all-time best-seller comics such as Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk, Daredevil and the X-Men -- all of which were recently taken to the big screen and became box-office hits.

"We do have a deal with Stan.... We've been working on it for some time," Richard S. Rosenzweig, chairman of Alta Loma Entertainment, told Reuters. Alta Loma is the entertainment and production arm of Playboy Enterprises.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Stan and Hef have had a mutual-admiration society for many many years," he added. Hefner, a cartoonist himself, made super-hero-themed comics during his high school years.

The venture is still at an early stage. Alta Loma and Lee's POW! Entertainment, a company that creates live-action and animation motion pictures and television franchises, said they will work on the 30-minute series, which will be developed for mainstream television.

Unlike the centerfold girls that have made Playboy a highly successful magazine for men since its launch in 1953, the Superbunnies won't bare all in the new show.

Last month adult cartoon "Stripperella," featuring the likeness of "Bay Watch" star Pamela Anderson in the leading role, made its debut on Spike TV, the just-rebranded cable network previously known as TNN. Playboy has previously worked with networks such as Fox, a unit of News Corp. (NWS: Research, Estimates) and home to "The Simpsons" and "That '70s Show."

Playboy's two-hour reality show special, "The Girl Next Door: The Search For A Playboy Centerfold," lured many young viewers when it aired on Fox earlier this year.

"Hef's Superbunnies" is the latest project of the energetic Hefner, who at 77 dates several ladies simultaneously, throws glitzy parties at his Los Angeles Playboy Mansion and mingles with all things cute in Hollywood.

Playboy Enterprises has been busily tuning its business model by revamping the flagship Playboy magazine, offering more exclusive content online and improving the distribution of its television channels as it faces increased competition.

Stan's turning out to be a little different in real life than what he portrayed himself as in his DVD.

Oh, and this will last 8 episodes. Why? Because when critics point to both this and Stripperella as terrible failures, Lee can say, "Superbunnies wasn't a failure! It lasted twice as long as Stripperella!"

Any idea on how Stripperella is doing? I can't wait to hear when it gets cancelled, but part of me fears it might be a hit.

It's hard to believe the mastermind behind X-Men is willing to create such bullshit as this. Then again, I haven't read any of the comics, so I wouldn't know how good/how bad those are. I'm just going by the cartoons and movies that are sprung from the comics.....so, they'd have to be good, right?

Yuna just solidified her position as biggest TSM idiot of the century. The X-Men mark to end all X-Men marks hasn't read ONE comic. You're officially not allowed to make any more stupid banners bearing the likeness of any X-Man real or fictional nor do any of your ghey-ass roleplaying bullshit using X-Men characters. Loser.

Stan Lee's Mutants, Monsters, and Marvels, hosted by Kevin Smith. It's a 2 hour long interview with Stan about his life and the comic world. It's pretty good stuff, although I don't know how Stripperella fits in.

*Groan* Oh, JEEZ, Yuna. Could you, at the very least, buy an Ultimate X-Men collection or two?

It might interfere with her lovey dovey role-playing where everyone just socializes instead of, you know, doing X-Men-like stuff. No wonder she has no clue.

From reading Stan Lee's bio I get the sense that he's a great idea guy, but he's not very good at censoring himself or others. Like he'll come up with an idea, no matter how bad, and just run with it. Or if someone presents an idea to him he'll say "Ok, that sounds great. I can make that work." He's your typical dreamer, chasing whatever strikes his fancy at the moment.

As far as Stripperella is concerned, I have no idea. There was a rumour that was never backed up by anyone saying the show was already done before it aired, with only 4 episodes in the can. Well, that was obviously false as a 5th episode aired on Thursday. However, it could end up that the reported number of completed episodes was the only thing false about that rumour, we'll have to see.

I'm not sure how it's doing now, but the debut was in the 2.X rating area, which as I understand is a hit for cable TV.

I think anyone who's read any number of comics and seen the cartoons/shows/movies they inspire will tell you that it's pretty rare that those outlets take many of the stories from the comics and use them. Of course, this is more true to the movies than any of the shows (which have been known to use some stories for their episodes), since they often feature the director's own take on the characters involved, rather than what's happened in the comics. For the most part, shows and movies based on comic book characters and the actual comics from which they are the basis of have proven to be like night and day the majority of the time, making it a bit idiotic to assume that it's all the same.

I wouldn't bust her chops for never haven read any comics, since I know many people who love the movies and shows yet have never picked up a comic in their lives, but it still is wise to have some knowledge of how the characters actually are in the books as opposed to how their portrayed on the silver screen.

But do those same people OBSESS over the characters, make cutesy little banners proclaiming their obsession or even ROLE PLAY as the characters they adore? It just seems odd to me that someone who does all this wouldn't bother to look at the source material.

No, those are the people who see those movies as just that, movies. Nothing more, nothing less. They don't particularily think too much about them once they leave the theatre, so it's acceptable in a way that they don't go and read comics before or after. If you're going to obsess over them and the characters however, it would certainly help to actually have a knowledge of just what you're obsessing over, I will say that much.

That's all I was saying. So I'm perfectly in the right to bust Yuna's lame-ass chops. Way to backtrack.

I didn't backtrack. I still don't think anyone needs to bust her chops over it. If she wants to make herself look stupid by obsessing over things she knows little about, then that's her deal. I'm just not going to waste the effort to make a big deal out of it, since it's not like many people around here take criticism, constructive or not, well and actually give two seconds to think, "Hey, maybe he's got a point there." You already saw what you saying something about it did, another lameass X-Men Photoshop picture. She spent more time doing that than thinking that perhaps she should read just one comic that's the basis of her obsession of the month.

Just to add to the fray, but the X-Men of the movies and cartoons are NOT Stan Lee's X-Men.

Sure Xavier, Jean Grey, Iceman, Cyclops, Magneto and the Sentinels were created under his watch but most of what we know as the X-Men and thats Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Storm, The Phoenix Saga, the whole Weapon X and "God Creates Man Kills" storylines that the movies are based on, ect all that came after the X-Men reset in 1975 when Lee was long gone from the X-Men books

Same with DareDevil, most of what DareDevil is today came under Frank Miller in the 70's, not under Stan Lee's watch in the 1960's

Just to FYI you on that fact. Just because Stan has creation credit doesn't mean he has creative credit for the whole kit plus kaboodle

Believe me, I've tried. I checked at the library to see if they had any X-Men comics. Unfortunately for me, they didn't. I tried placeing some on hold/reserve but there's just so many...I wouldn't even know where to begin.

You already saw what you saying something about it did, another lameass X-Men Photoshop picture.

I didn't make that, thank you. That was made by another of my friends. She also made the Toad, Erik, and Mystique icons in my sig.

I either save my icons as .gifs or .pngs. .JPEGs mess up the color.

Don't look for the books themselves, go for graphic novels and other anthology style books, i.e. Marvel's "Essential" series

You can actually find them at any book store (all kinds, big chains, mom and pop or even used) maybe not at libraries though you never know

Good luck catching up, you have like 40 some years, not to mention during the 90's and today the X-Men universe just X-Paned X-Ponentially to outragous levels, I mean at one point there were something like 1,000 different titles (obvious X-ggaration but you'll see my point)

Check out a website like x-fan.com or marvel's websites before deciding what you want to catch up on (also ask around the comics folder as well)

There's a problem there, which is a shortage of little green slips of paper. What little money I am getting is all going in the "X2 DVD Savings Fund".

I want to read some of the comics to learn more about the characters I like, but the insane amount of how many there are is a bit intimidating.
