Guest undisputedjericho Report post Posted August 28, 2003 As a new fan of football (Just started full time watching last season), and the New York Giants, I was wondering something as I went through some old drafts online. The Giants took Tiki Barber in the 1997 draft in round 2, like 36 overall or so. Then, in 2000, with their first round pick they chose Heisman winner, and fellow running back, Ron Dayne. My question is, why did they take another running back with their first pick when they had a perfectly fine back as it was for two years already? Was Tiki not a starter till recently, or they just didn't have the confidence in him? Because going back, it seems like it was one of the biggest draft mistakes I have seen. Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted August 28, 2003 Three reasons 1. Last season was Barber's best by miles. he wasn't always a top back. 2. At the time it was thought that Barber is too small to be a full time starter without being hurt. (and he does get hurt a lot) 3. Dayne was thought to be good at the time of his drafting. the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2003 Tiki wasn't really the Tiki you know now then. He didn't really do anything special until last year. Two years ago his rushing total was only 800 and change and the year before that just broke 1000 (not a special accomplishment.) I did enjoy that though, because my best friend is a Giants fan and the whole time he was screaming for them to take Chad Pennington. Barber would do the outside running like quicker backs do, and they'd pound Dayne up the middle. The logical thing, of course, was to make Dayne a fullback and let him play the Mike Alstott role, but the Giants apparently weren't that bright. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Man, baseball drafts are the biggest gamble outside of the Wheel of Fortune at a casino. Seriously, these guys are still very much kids coming out of high school, and being a "can't miss" prospect puts way too much pressure on them to perform at a pro level.
