Guest Dynamite Kido Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 I liked the main event, but this week I think I am going to go with AMW vs. Simon/Swinger........
Guest TDinDC1112 Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 I liked the main event. I thought the near falls were tremendous. I also think they did a good job of trying to keep AJ strong by kicking out of some crazy situations.
Guest Dynamite Kido Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 ^I thought all the interference hurt it though
The Ghost of bps21 Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Unless people are going out and having epic ***** matches... Interference in a match like that...where the entire storyline is about a group of people trying to keep Raven from winning is just plain old necessary. What made it great was Raven overcoming so much of it and that putting heat on both Raven (for overcoming them) AND Styles (for overcoming as well) before Raven finally fell victim. Not only did it build next week's main event right out of it...but it was the story of the match. This wasn't Raven's destiny time. That storyline will come later. When did we become wuch elitists that something as basic as a HEEL using a bat (Styles/Low Ki) becomes a "Screwjob"? Screwjob? SummerSlam 97 was a screwjob. Siaki and Trinity running in and hitting finishers during every Dlo/Styles match is more of a screwjob. A heel using heel tactics is not. The main arguments I hear against this finish are the bob barron standard "Makes AJ look weak" which is ridiculous in this case since Styles actually had to kick out of like 3 falls that should have taken out ANY heel. The other is just the standard belief that interference ruins every match. I've never believed in that one...at least not since Over The Edge 98 when Foley and Austin had a classic based almost solely on it's overbooking. If you want to complain about the finishes of the 6 man (No contest), Dlo/Siaki (even though that was a relatively clean for a heel win), Sandman/Abyss (Storyline driven, with the KAsh/Abyss story taking presedence over the Sandman match), or Lynn/Shane then I'm with you. But this match going in was all about Raven having to overcome all odds to win. He almost did, and that made the ending great. They also worked shockingly well together before that IMO. Styles looked stronger coming out of it than going in, Raven is more over as usual, got to see a good match... If I saw that in the WWE I wouldn't complain about who ran in...I'd understand WHY they did.
bob_barron Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Raven could've been defeated cleanly by AJ in a long hard fought match and then as he struggles to his feet- the New Church run in and beat the shit out of him. AJ wins cleanly, Raven looks strong and the New Church are still huge heels I thought the match was excellent but I'm getting tired of people running in every title match
The Ghost of bps21 Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 So...despite the fact that they've been running a storyline with Shane Douglas for 2 months predicated entirely on his hatred over Raven trying to win the NWA title... You'd just scrap it in favor of a match that wouldn't have had nearly as many great near falls at the end from Styles? I'll pass.
The Ghost of bps21 Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 I thought the match was excellent but I'm getting tired of people running in every title match And I agree with you. ON EVERY OTHER MATCH. Not this one.
bob_barron Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Have Eric Watts bar them from ringside. You can even have New Church attack Raven before the match. Raven struggling to his feet knowing his destiny did not come true- and then having the New Church run out and kill him- I'd mark out
The Ghost of bps21 Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 The only person that scenerio puts heat on is Raven. And Raven is the only one who doesn't need it right now. Sure Styles would win clean...but he: 1. Wouldn't be the one overcoming should be finishes. 2. Wouldn't even be involved in the New Church/Raven aftermatch thus rendering anything they did useless to anyone not on this board. Instead...Styles gets put over and Douglas gets put over. Raven passes his heat on and continues to be the most over person in the promotion.
Guest Goodear Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 So did any match night end with a clean finish?
The Ghost of bps21 Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Yes. Just none of the ones on the actual show. I am almost certain however that every match in the Super X cup did...so next week is clean finishes abound!
Jack_Bauer Posted August 28, 2003 Report Posted August 28, 2003 Raven v Styles was nuts and I loved it. I went for Styles v Raven and I'll say again that THIS was the show that made TNA my no. 1 fed.
Guest hebtheeagle Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 I voted for Styles and Raven...but seeing Simon and Swinger finally win the Tag belts made my week.
Mecha Mummy Posted September 3, 2003 Report Posted September 3, 2003 AMW vs. Simon/Swinger has gotten redundant and boring to me. Raven vs. AJ by default.
