the max 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2003 http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/news_story.asp?id=52654 TORONTO (CP) - The Toronto Blue Jays considered eliminating the word blue from their name. Instead, they just dropped it from their logo. The Blue Jays unveiled a new logo for the 2004 season Tuesday evening, adding black and silver trimming to a newly stylized bird while getting rid of the red maple leaf backdrop. It's the fourth logo in the team's 27-year history and a radical departure from the current look, which was unveiled in 1997. ``We felt an exciting new look for the organization was a logical step in as we continue to attract a new wave of fans,'' Blue Jays president Paul Godfrey said in a release. The change was motivated by a desire to make the team's style younger and hipper. Market research suggested fans felt the current logo was tired and dated. The new logo, designed by Toronto-based Brandid, has a blue jay with a silver beak extending from the J in the word Jays. The three-dimensional metallic letters are white and silver surrounded by blue and black trim. Team caps will sport the bird with letter J. ``Our fans like to call us `the Jays,''' said Lisa Novak, the team's senior vice-president, business affairs, who was in charge of the redesign. ``We felt it would only be right to acknowledge them by giving recognition to this in the primary logo. Of course, the club name remains the Toronto Blue Jays as it is an important and cherished part of the team's identity and history.'' Fans will be shown the new logo prior to Wednesday's game against the New York Yankees. The team's original logo had a blue jay emblazoned with a maple leaf set against a baseball. The current look was introduced in 1997, when the bird was modernized and the primary backdrop changed from a baseball to large red maple leaf. In 2000, the Jays added a secondary logo with an animated bird holding a bat wrapped around large T. The Jays will officially switch over to the new logo in the new year. I like it. It looks sleeker, and more professional without a cartoonish bird.
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2003 Looks like a cross between the new Seahawks logo and the Devil Rays...way to emulate success! I liked the old logos with the bird and ball/leaf. Boo.

CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2003 I will still like the original logo above all others: But this logo is light years beyond anything they've had for the last ten years: EDIT: HEY!!!!! Where the hell's the maple leaf???

Guest Anglesault Report post Posted September 3, 2003 What in the HELL is that? Holy shit is that ugly. In five, ten years tops people are going to remember this with the same prestige as when the Islanders stole the Gordon's Fishsticks logo. Pick a logo and stick to it. That's why it's your fucking logo. It's supposed to be something that people see and immediately think of your organization. Repeatedly changing it kind of nullifies that. The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2003 I will still like the original logo above all others: That's the one! The next one = eh, the third = awful. Si Montreal perdra les Expos, j'espere ils laissent le logo <<MEB>>. (Mon francais est tres mal car je n'ai pas utilise` depuis le juin.)
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted September 3, 2003 I like the new one the best of all their logos. Besides you can't tell shit until you see the logo that's on the uniforms and hats. This is more like a company logo.
treble 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2003 Well, it's an improvement over the logo they used this year (I like the look of the black caps I've seen), but it seems kinda generic.

Ahhhhhhhh enough with the black hats!!!! When will teams realize only the White Sox make black look good when it comes to baseball uniforms? Seriously when the fuck are the Mets going to get rid of those ugly black hats and uniforms? Oh and at least they kept "Blue" in the nickname or they would have had to change their logo to a picture of Jay Mohr or something. Edit: Ya I know the Giants and Orioles wear black too but at least they've always had black in their uniform colors. Not fond of Halloween colors though. the max 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2003 Didn't Oakland have an alternate black jersey, or am I imagining things again? I would like to see the Marlins wear their black jerseys as their home unis from now on. They are using the pin-striped ones for home Sunday games more often now, and it looks a lot worse than the black ones. The DBacks have a black alternate, as do the Mets, and the Mariners. treble 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2003 I'd prefer them to wear the black hats over the baby blue ones that I also saw from what they showed of the unveiling on SportsNet.

Bored 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2003 Didn't Oakland have an alternate black jersey, or am I imagining things again? Yes they they did in 2001 and they sucked! Thankfully they scrapped them after one year. Oh and Choken...the Reds black unis suck too sorry. The classic Red unfiorms are so much better.

starvenger 0 Report post Posted September 3, 2003 The new logo looks ok, but I wish that they'd kept a maple leaf in there. Still, I don't think that there will be as much outrage as in Long Island with the Fisherman's jersey because, well, Torontonians would have to give a flying fuck about the Jays first. The Blue Jays have really failed to mean anything in Toronto since the strike, and changing their logo isn't gonna put asses in the seats.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted September 3, 2003 Anyone see the Irony in a team that seems to change logos as often as they change socks (Four logos in less than 30 years is absurd) debuting yet another new logo against a team that has basically stayed the same for 80 yeas? Guest BobbyWhioux Report post Posted September 4, 2003 Trying too hard to look hip and cool is the least hip and most uncool thing you can do. It's bad enough when you're a person. The uncoolness is magnified when you're talking about a company, and deep down we all know the team is really doing it in the hope that their market share (fan base) will feel it has to buy the same old hat and shirt gear combo all over again to "update" to the new logo and "stay current." Uniform tops in colors other than white or gray make it feel like I'm watching batting practice / spring training exhibition. Or maybe amateurs at the high school or company softball level. They have a "this doesn't count" vibe to them. That spills over into the game, and onto the team. And again, they're only worn by the team as an advertisment/endorsement, because their primary function is to be sold to the more gullible aspects of the fan base to supplement revenue. starvenger 0 Report post Posted September 4, 2003 One of the Toronto Star writers had a funny column where he noted that the Jays should just drop the "J" so that they can become like the team Godfrey and Ricciardi want them to be - the A(y)'s or "Eh's".
