Nevermortal 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2003 Courtesy of Matthew Pelletier of the DVDR board. Ring of Honor 9/6/03 Report Wakefield, MA Charbonneau Field House We were in the building by 6:45pm. John Walters, Devito, Loc, Homicide and Julius Smokes posed for pictures and signed autographs prior to the event starting. Eventually, Raven come out of the locker room to do the same. There was a worked brawl prior to the event as Homicide & Smokes were signing autographs. Trent Acid & Johnny Kashmere attacked Homicide & Smokes and they fought briefly. I asked Gabe what the attendance for the event was, he said he wasn't sure. I asked the music guy and he said 750. I believe he was guessing, so take that for what it's worth. Should also be noted that front row tickets have gone up in price from $30 to $35. Prior to the start of the event it was announced that Low Ki, Danny Maff and Xavier were all not at the show due to various different reasons. The first match was a Field of Honor match between Jimmy Rave and Colt Cabana. Match lasted 12 minutes and was won by Cabana. The second match was between local wrestler Slyk Wagner Brown (w/April Hunter) against Diablo Santiago (w/Oman Tortuga). Brown won the match in 5 minutes. Following the match, Tortuga briefly stated that Hunter wanted him not Brown. Thus led to Hunter beating up Tortuga. The third match was the 4-Team Scramble Tag Match between Jose & Joel Maximo, Johnny Kashmere & Trent Acid, Special K and Dunn & Marcos. Match was 9 minutes in length and was won by Kashmere & Acid. Following the match, Homicide, Smokes and Benny (didn't catch a last name) came to the ring. Homicide wanted a match with Acid. Acid at first said no and then said he would only if it was a wrestling match. Homicide threw in the stipulation that if he lost he'd never wrestle in ROH again. The fourth match was another Field of Honor match, this time between John Walters and Matt Stryker. Stryker won the match in 13 minutes. Following the match, Walters cut a face promo saying he values winning very much and next time is guaranteeing victory. Personally my favorite match of the evening. The fifth match was a Six-Man Tag Team Grudge Match between Special K and The Carnage Crew (Justin Credible, Devito and Loc). The match was won in 15 minutes when Credible pinned Deranged of Special K. During the match, Smokes was out again and got Slugger (Special K's enforcer) to leave Special K and I guess join him and Homicide. Next was intermission with Jose & Joel Maximo posing for pictures and signing autographs. Raven was also out again with pictures. The sixth match was between Mark Briscoe and BJ Whitmer with Whitmer subbing for Low Ki. Briscoe won the match in 13 minutes. The seventh match was between Trent Acid (w/Kashmere) and Homicide (w/Smokes) and was called "1 of 3 main events." During the match Homicide suffered a busted nose and also Smokes was laid out with a lariat from Acid. Homicide won the match in 14 minutes. The eight match was the Four Corners match between ROH Champion Samoa Joe, AJ Styles, Chris Sabin (subbing for Homicide, who had already wrestled) and Jay Briscoe. This was a non-title match, but if someone pinned Joe they'd receive a title shot in the future, however if Joe pinned one of the 3 men, that man would never receive a title shot in ROH again. Match was 21 minutes long and was won by Briscoe when he pinned Sabin. Following the eight match, Gary Michael Cappetta held a Q&A session with Justin Credible where fans could ask Credible anything they wanted while the ring crew set up the steel cage for the main event. The questions were as follows: -First it was, is HHH as much of a jerk as the Internet makes him out to be? Credible responded that he's certainly out for his own interests, and Credible then said it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that though. -Next was, how bad was it working with Albert? Credible said Albert was a nice guy and said Albert certainly "had his back" (including outside of wrestling). Never said Albert was a bad wrestler. -Next question was either what was his favorite Credible/Lynn match or what was his favorite match he's performed in. He said it was the 1998 ECW Heatwave PPV match he had with Lynn. -Next it was, who was Aldo Montoya. Credible jokingly responded some young punk who had no idea. -Next was, is Vince McMahon the biggest prick (said in more colorful language) in the WWE. Credible said he's not the biggest, since Jim Ross and Johnny Ace are bigger ones. -Next it was who was the better Impact Player, Credible or Lance Storm. Credible never said straight out who it was, but said Storm trained him, so essentially said Storm was better. -Next was, how much money does Paul Heyman still owe Credible. Credible said Heyman made him so he isn't going to go looking for money from Heyman. Both helped each other he said. -Next question was, were there plans for a Credible vs. Corino title feud at the end of ECW. Credible said no, he and Corino were going to be a tag team. -Last real question was, did Bret Hart really have sex with Sunny (said with more colorful language). Credible said he wasn't in the room, but yes, Hart did. (again with more colorful language.) Credible then said he doesn't really know and is just saying what he thinks you guys (the fans) want to hear. -Next question was a worked one where someone asked Credible his views on ecstasy. Special K came out of the locker room and jumped Credible. Devito & Loc proceeded to save Credible. Carnage Crew had heated words with ROH owner Rob Feinstein. Probably setting up some sort of gimmick match between the 2 teams soon. -After the Q&A, cage was finally put together with many weapons inside. Everything from a steel chair to a shovel to a kitchen sink to even a toilet seat cover. As ROH crew made doubly sure the cage was save, an older man (never caught a name) began dancing in the aisle and eventually in the cage to ROH theme music. Crowd enjoyed it as it was very spontaneous and very funny. Main event for the evening lasted 31 minutes and was a Clockwork Orange House of Fun Steel Cage match between Raven and CM Punk. Raven won the match, despite interference from Colt Cabana on Punk's behalf. After the match, the lights went out as the ROH crew quickly brought a giant red X down to the ring and Punk crucified Raven on it. The X symbolizing straight edge, which is what Punk is. Overall, a good show. Next ROH show in Massachusetts is in the same building on Saturday, November 29, 2003. Fucking textbooks. Fucking textbooks indeed. Phoenix Fury Legdrop 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2003 To plug for them, expect a live report by ShooterJay & Zack Malibu of this show, under the PCN name, sometime (I would say tomorrow, but I don't want to rush them) on the main site.
Guest Deviant Report post Posted September 7, 2003 That show sounds fantastic. I am really liking the Field of Honor concept and how it is working thus far, the main event in particular sounds great and if this wasn't the climax, where can Raven and Punk go from here? Really solid card, can't wait until I finally see it on video.
Guest Dave O'Neill, Journalist Report post Posted September 7, 2003 Who'da thunk that Raven, at his age and condition, could go for 31 minutes. Truly this promotion brings out the best in people
Zack Malibu 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2003 Who'da thunk that Raven, at his age and condition, could go for 31 minutes. Truly this promotion brings out the best in people Eh, the cage match was a letdown, IMO. Too much stalling, etc. You'll get our opinion of that and the whole show fairly soon, fear not. Guest Jay Z. Hollywood Report post Posted September 7, 2003 I'll just give quick thoughts, and save the more indepth report (complete with PICS~!) for the main site report on Thursday. Rave/Cabana was good-mostly a comedy match but there was good psych, working towards their finishers. Brown/Santiago was your basic fun filler match-SWB has gotten a lot better since I last saw him stinking up Mass indys two years ago. I love the scramble matches, and this was a good one. Promo setting up Homicide/Acid ran too long, though. Stryker/Walters was a piss break match for me, missed most of it. Special K/Carnage Crew was the most fun match of the night, Credible was mega-over and you could tell he was having a really good time. Ending spots were SICK. Briscoe/Whitmer was a lot like a Kurt Angle match- tons of suplex variations, the SSP Briscoe did was INSANE. Homicide/Acid was the same as their Then and Now match with a few new spots and a different finish. Still BRUTAL though, and the crowd loved this one, 2nd most heat behind CC/Special K. 4way: Good match, AJ had kind of an off-night, blew a few spots. Didn't expect Briscoe to win at all. Cage match was disappointing, as Zack said. Mostly because ROH chose piss-poor weapons for it and Raven and Punk didn't BRING THE HATE~! like they usually do. Ending spot was AWESOME though and I dug the crucifixion deal. Raven/Punk is basically following the same format as Raven/Dreamer, but with Raven in Tommy's role. Again, much more detailed report, complete with DA PICS~! will be on the main site Thursday, Friday at the latest.
Guest ToddRoyal Report post Posted September 8, 2003 I was able to get to the show last night (real short notice, my friend's dad gave him the tickets the day before as a surprise birthday present) and it was REALLY fun. Not to take away from Jay/Zack, but here's my thoughts... About 7:00 they announced that Raven, Homicide and the Carnage Crew were signing by the merch table, so we along with about 30 others headed over there. A minute or so later, Rob Fienstein and two other guys showed up with cameras, which struck me as odd. 30 seconds later, Acid shows up and gets in the face of Homicide/Smokes, starting the brawl. I'm 99% sure I'm on the tape, as Trent almost took me out as he backed up, and a security guy pulled me out of the way of a Homicide wild punch. The best part of this whole thing was Loc and Devito making fun of Smokes while the fight went on. Cabana/Rave was a fun opener, though the guys sitting directly behind us were the idiots yelling "JOBBER". Cabana is just awesome in his role and Rave did a nice job selling the back injury in the match, leading up to the Colt .45. Slyk/Diablo was basic fluff filler, but Slyk was way over here, and as mentioned, a HUGE improvement over the guy doing NWA: NE shows a few years back. The Scramble was a TON of fun, and the one-man Spanish Fly to the outside was just AMAZING. The Backseats and the SAT were by far the most over, and the crowd was absolutely the hottest for this one. Stryker/Walters was a really solid match. Lots of work on the leg by Stryker, that actually paid off in the finish when Walters couldn't hold Stryker up, and Matt fell on top for the pin. A Great bit before the match when the NYC bus trip guys chanted "You're not the real Striker" and Stryker pointed to his tights to prove them wrong. Walters has come a LONG way since I first saw him. CC/Special K was all sorts of fun. The Special K guys NOT in the match made the night for my section at least (B) by their constant interaction. Becky and Elax played to the crowd a bit, but Hijinx was AWESOME. The guy never slowed down and kept our section entertained the whole match. The Piledriver on Becky was pretty sick, and the spot with Justin Credible hitting Angeldust with 6 rolling Vertical suplexes, only to get a "ONE MORE TIME" chant and hit #7 was awesome. Briscoe/Whitmer was one of the best matches of the night. They got the crowd into it big time by the end, and just brutalized each other. As mentioned, Mark's SSP was amazing, and both guys busted their asses. Acid/Homicide was BRUTAL and the best match of the night. Trent got bust open NASTY on the eye a minute in, and then Homicide got split open even worse. Just a stiff, stiff match that was a real unexpected surprise. Outside the ring highlight: Kashmere explaining to our section that Julius Smokes was simply "Talking Irish" to the Boston Crowd. The 4 way was really good, though AJ was definately off. Sabin played a good heel, and they built tension between AJ and Joe for the entire match. Jay got his ass handed to him the whole match, but when Styles and Joe took each other out, he hit the Jay Driller on Sabin for the win. Good storytelling here. The cage match was disappointing and whoever was in charge of the weapons needs to be fired. The plastic plates and crappy folding chairs took the whole crowd out of the match, and Punk was visibly pissed at the dead crowd. The ending finally heated it up, and the crucifixtion was a nice touch. Probably the biggest disappointment for me was the Cabana interference and ref bump just because it seemed SO WWE. Overall a GREAT show, though, and I got to meet and talk to CM Punk, Raven, Credible and both SAT's so an even better overall experience. Not that it needs to be said with ROH, but get the tape.
