There's also no point in talking about long-term effects because we all know that Vince & co. never contemplate the long-term. People always bash Goldberg for injuring Bret Hart..."he shouldn't get the title because he almost killed Bret!" , "FUCK GOLDBERG! he hurt Bret!" and so on... But Owen Hart broke Steve Austin's neck, and people never say "FUCK OWEN! He broke Austin's neck!" , "Owen didn't deserve the title because he almost killed Austin!" Just an observation.... As for the Owen Hart thing, I'd like think the reason no one holds it against him now is out of respect for the dead.
