Expecting was on Space Thursday, and I got around to it today. Definitely one of the lesser episodes. Only really worthwhile part was Wesley confronting the demon.

 

Demon: “Who is the interloper to think you could disturb the birth of my children? Who are you?”

Wesley stands up: “Wesley Wyndham-Pryce, rogue demon hunter. (Puts up his fists) And I’m here to fight you, Sir, to the death, - preferably yours.”

Demon: “You?”

Wesley: “As a heathen I wouldn’t expect you to be familiar with the biblical story of David and Goliath. But I assure you it’s of particular relevance to this situation.”

Demon: “You said you came here to do battle, then lets fight and be done.”

Wesley looks around then slowly inches closer to the demon on the rim of the vat: “Yes, well, - as a point of courtesy, - I like to get to know my opponents, before I engage them in mortal combat. Do you, ah – do you have any hobbies?”

She tonight. Not bad overall. Featured some really awesome physical comedy on Wes' part, just randomly falling on his ass 3 or 4 times through the episode. Him and Angel dancing at Cordy's party is hi-larious. So much so, they stuck more of it in the closing credits.

 

TVTome folk really shit on it. It's got an average rating in the 5s, which places it 2nd-last for the series, only ahead of I Fall to Pieces. The system is somewhat flawed, since it's not necessarily fans of the series doing the voting. So rabid Dharma & Greg fans may very well have handed out 1s to any of the competition. I'm not sure what else would put it that low.

I don't think it was ever really explained, other than The First wanted Angel to Kill Buffy and go bad again, or something.

The big question I come away with is did the First know that a vampire with a soul would be responsible for stopping its apocalypse (ala Spike)?

There's no indication it does and if it did know it makes it look even more retarded than it already comes off as.

Why? Turning Angel evil probably would have gotten him killed by Buffy, ala Season Two.

If it knew it would have had the vamp kill himself. If it KNOWS Spike is going to stop it if he gets the amulet, why not have Spike jump into a kiddy pool full of Holy Water?

 

The whole Trigger thing makes little sense as is, it's even worse if you say it knew ahead of time Spike is the key to the apocalypse.

It didn't mind when Angel said he was going to kill himself towards the end of "Amends". There was precendence for Buffy killing her evil boyfriend.

Why would it mind? A good guy killing himself is good news for a baddie.

The trigger was an attempt by the first evil to get Spike killed, likewise "Amends" was Angel getting himself killed. Both were supposed to turn them against Buffy, as the First knew it could have Buffy would win the fight.

If the Trigger was supposed to get Spike killed then FE once again looks like a huge dumbass. It had countless chances to have Spike go crazy and need to be staked, instead it had him chill out in the basement because it "wasnt time yet".

 

Amends was supposed to get BUFFY killed, it just settled with Angel. If it's original plan was to kill angel it woudl have just left him in hell.

or made it seem that way to make all that shit tougher for the Scoobies. Think they would really care as much if the First was just being evil? So it did evil stuff that seemed to foreshadow and Evil Goal so they wouldn't just crack wise at it like Buffy did in Amends

Just because it's an eternal incoporeal spirit doesn't mean it can't have emotions and be sensetive.

*sigh* no, not so that they wouldn't make fun of it. And I'm not saying that it didn't, I'm just saying it might not have. If it made it seem like it had a plan, then it would be able to make the scoobies even more miserable, and probably frustrated that they couldn't figure out what the plan was.

I thought Jasmine or the PTB's ended up takign credit for bringing Angel back, and that the FE was just lying.

 

I'm assuming the FE knew that a vampire with a soul would stop it. In that sense, not only would turning either of those guys get them killed but it would also be emotionally devastating for Buffy.

probably the fact that after 5 seasons (including season 3 of Buffy) of them worrying about Angel losing his soul, they FUCKING TAKE OUT HIS SOUL THEMSELVES!!! Yeah, it was voluntary on his part, but he was talked into it. I'd be pissed at them if it didn't lead to Faith coming back.

That was the moment for me too. I was watching this, totally thinking that Angel was going to forgive Wesley and things were going to go on, and then Angel just takes the pillow.

 

Desperado's good given some of the heartbreaks and just Angel in general as a character.

Watching that again, what made it so incredibly shocking was up until that point it looked like Angel was going to forgive Wesley. You could really feel for Angel and Wesley.
