Thoughts on the Iron Man Match

Recommended Posts

Guest The Winter Of My Discontent

Well I'm half way through the match and it has been a bust in every way. The pins were easier to get than most old school Survivor Series matches. Just a downright drag. The better half could be the greatest shit ever, and I'd still feel let down. I taped it, and will probably never watch it again. Am I losing my marbles or did anyone else notice how subpar it has been? I'll go all smarky and give this one a ** for the first half hour. I'll update the rest later.

You DO know its broadcasted in Tuesdays and several people here get axcess to it on that night.

Maybe Banky got a copy of it early or gets it himself.

Edit: Or the Canada thing. (Didn't know Banky was from America Jr.)

I know! But some of us haven't seen it yet so why is he posting this now without a Spoiler warning?

I should spoiler my opinions on it? Meltzer gave his, I gave mine.

VERY weak. Its at 9:23 right now...and it still isn't very good. I remember when wrestling was about actual wrestling, not steel steps and folding chairs....wait, no I don't.

I'd give it **1/2 - ***.

Their Wrestlemania match was much much much better.

Well, at least the finish was alright. It wasn't terrible, but nothing I'd go out of my way to see again.

It was predictable. It doesn't mean that I didn't like the ending, but I could see it coming a mile away.

Here's my main gripes with the match.

Iron Man matches are geared towards hardcore WRESTLING fans. No casual fan wants to sit and watch wrestlers scrap for 1 hour. They don't care about psychology or working the crowd, they just want that cheap thrill...y'know, Torrie Wilson naked or some Mysterio hurricaranas. But this match alientated its main audience. There wasn't that much wrestling in it, there was ref bumps, steel chairs, steps, outside brawling, and all that other garbage they do nowadays. Unfortunately, that stuff just isn't exciting when its done for the first half hour. I'd rather see damn rest holds in the center of the ring than these guys mindlessly chewing up time with this hardcore shit.

My other gripe is how easily pins came. How can Angle be pinned twice in 10 minutes in this, yet any other match he is in, he lasts almost 30 minutes without one? How can he take an F-5 after 25 minutes at Wrestlemania yet he is pinned with one after 7 minutes? I know he got hit with a chair, but still, he (in wrestling terms) takes more punishment in a 30 minute match than one chairshot. Then, he taps to his anklelock 2 minutes later. Again, Chris Benoit used to put the ankle lock on Angle 20 minutes into their match-ups but Angle has never given up.

In addition, how can Angle has 5 falls against him 30-40 minutes into the match, when sometimes, he lasts that long without one? I understand how Lesnar was "cheating" to get the upper hand, but he didn't do anything that spectacular to get 5 victories over Angle. Most "realistic" Iron Man, and I use that word loosely, should have 2-3 pin falls...tops. This 5-4 nonsense just exposes what they do in normal singles matches as bullshit.

Fucking shit, I tells you. I'll give this match **3/4.

I don't know. From what I've seen so far it's a matter of storytelling. The first decision wasn't even a pin or anything. It was a DQ and the weapons plays to the monster side of Brock.

It was actually pretty clever storytelling. Brock throws away a fall so he could wear Angle down with a chair and easily get a pin and keep Angle down for the rest.

Maybe I'm just big on telling a story.

I don't understand your gripe about the amount of falls. It made for more excitement if Angle has to come back and it plays to Brock's strategy.

Who says it has to be 2-3? Like I said before it plays to Brock's monster side.

I agree, the beginning part was smart, but thats all I'll give it.

Stall stall stall.

Hop taunt kick. Repeat ad nauseum. Reminded me of Nash and his hair swipes.

There was no mat classics because there was nothing in the way of mat wrestling. They brawled all through it. Dissapointing.

I'm suprised that nobody has mentioned the very spotty selling of the leg attacks by Brock. Now it's there and now it's not kinda thing.

Kurt looked like gold through this whole match, which helps Brock look great(although Brock seemed to have troubles at times in the match). He looked ready to go another 30 easy. Props to Brock for being a 300 pound man going 60.

I really enjoyed the last 10 minutes of the match but overall I was quite disappointed in it. ***1/4

Well, I've got to strongly disagree. I really got into the second half of it and it was definitely a better match than Bret-HBK and probably better than Rock-HHH (haven't seen that in a while so I can't say for sure), though the match obviously doesn't mean as much as those did.

I don't think it's really fair to compare a match that has to go an hour with their Wrestlemania match where they can go all out over a shorter period of time. An hour must be really tiring, particularly all those Germans they were using at the end.

My other gripe is how easily pins came. How can Angle be pinned twice in 10 minutes in this, yet any other match he is in, he lasts almost 30 minutes without one?

I must admit that I completely gave up on any actual thinking while watching the WWE a while ago, so I wasn't bothered by that any more than the "Why isn't Kane dead?" or "Why am I still watching this ridiculous shit?" questions.

I was pleasantly suprised by the effort by both of them and might catch the second half replay later tonight.

As a Canadian, I've seen the match already, and I can't see how you guys are being so negative. ****1/2 from me.

How was it ****1/2, exactly? I'm really curious, and I would like to hear something more original than "it entertained me".

Man this match is boring. Not THAT bad, but i'm watching Anger Management instead.

How did Angle lose to ONE f5 when at WM he took 2 or 3 of them w/o being pinned.

Agreed. That just wasn't one of my main gripes. But yes, with a bum knee, he managed to kick out of the ankle lock twice...something he couldn't do with a good knee at Summerslam.

And Lesnar did stall, but I took that as part of the match. They both really stalled when it came to brawling outside the ring. Breaking the count out and sometimes not breaking it. The match was spotty and shakey at every turn.

I felt it was a great match. The drama with Angle trying so hard to come back but Brock being able to stop him at will, the story of Brock being smart enough to trick Angle and control the entire match, the obvious effort from both men, the spots where they both learned stuff from previous matches and stuff from earlier in the match, and the fact that yes, I was entertained by it. And that, to me, adds up to a great ****1/2 match.

The stalling at the start was a good idea, but using that to set up the beginning of the match could have been done in 3 minutes instead of 6.

That's what got the bulk of the ***1/4 from me. I can not say (in a match like this where opinions can reasonably go either way) that I strongly disagree with your rating.
