Nighthawk

Pumpkin, with Christina Ricci

Recommended Posts

I knew nothing about this movie, it had slipped in under my radar, but I got it because I felt like something with Christina Ricci. She plays a college student, rich, sheltered and perfect, who falls in love with a handicapped guy who is part of a Special Olympics type fundraiser her sorority is sponsoring to win some sort of best sorority contest. I was really floored by this movie, because it is about cuckoldry. If you don’t know what that it is, it’s somewhere between a fetish and an alternative lifestyle. Basically it involves a man’s wife/girlfriend openly acknowledging his sexual inferiority and pursuing a relationship with another man (or men… or woman/women), and the man being submissive and humbled by her lover(s). In the movie, it’s played just under the surface, but I’ve never seen a sexual kink of that magnitude dealt with so blatantly in a mainstream movie, besides maybe Crash, but it was the selling point for that, and Pumpkin seemed so innocuous at first glance. I know it may seem like I’m reading too deep, but it is there, and there’s no way it’s unintentional. It’s not just a couple subversive touches, either, it’s pretty much the entire movie. Makes me wonder if Christina Ricci has interest in that sort of thing, or if it’s just the writer and/or director. It’s porn if you’re into cuckoldry, but someone might not pick up on it at all if you’re not much of an aficionado of alternative sexuality. Like I said I knew nothing about it, so I’m wondering if anyone else here has seen it, and what they thought of it. Is this cuckold thing common knowledge or am I coming out of left field with this? I can go into detail about where it is in the movie if anyone wants.

Aside from the things I mentioned in my previous two posts, I don't think it was very good. I tried looking at it as parody, or satire... it just came back to where I started. I know there's a fair contingent of Ricci fans here, I would have thought a few more people had seen it.

i've heard some good things about it, but not enough to actively seek it out. i may give it a look once it's out of the new release section.

and your taste in aphex twin pictures is very disturbing.

New release?

This movie got released in the winter of LAST year (11/5 to be exact). Hell, it's on CABLE right now.

Personally, I like the premise, but it didn't really succeed in being the dark romantic comedy it was trying to be. Not to mention it went on for about 30 minutes more than it should've. My wife thinks it's cutsie and adorable, so of course I own it on DVD.

I saw the first 20 minutes of it but lack of CC made me change it.

I can't stand Narrated Movies.

I don't really think it was trying to be that. My considered opinion is that the humor (which mostly fell flat to me) is there for stage dressing, somebody just wanted to make a movie about cuckoldry. It had two directors and one of them wrote it, so it's probably that guy.

I thought it was pretty funny how that tennis player didn't die after his car blew up and fell off of a cliff. Also funny how Christina Ricci can increase/decrease athletic abilities simply with her presence. I liked the Pumpkin character, and I think the movie raises an interesting issue.
