Purchases online?

I never felt comfortable making purchases online using a credit or debit card for safety reasons. I remember seeing a documentary a few years ago (before I ever owned a credit card) about hackers easily accessing personal info and basically stealing your cash.

 

I want to start making purchases online because I find it cheaper to do so. Do any of you have any horror stories about online thiefs or am I just worried for nothing?

I only buy from reputable looking sites that have secure ordering.

 

If it looks like a shady site and has no secure ordering...I'd proceed with caution.

 

 

Also I only use my debit card, which never has a large amount of cash. Unless it's a slow spending thief I'd know something is up at end of the month and woudn't have lost that much.

This relates both to the online shopping topic, and in general the best ways to prevent identity theft

 

1. Order only from the big reputable sites with secure ordering

 

2. If your CC issuer has a website, use it regularly. This way you keep an eye on if anyone else has pilfered your # and is running up the charges.

 

3. Get your credit report regularly, so you know if someone else has opened up accounts in your name elsewhere

 

There are other things you can do as well (anyone else feel free to add to this list), but these have kept me allright since I've been in the world of credit

I buy things online frequently and I've never once had a problem. As has been suggested, buy from the larger, more reputable sites, always make sure the server you're using is secure, never allow the purchasing site to remember your credit card details, and keep an eye on your statements.

Also, don't sign the back of your credit card, instead write "SEE ID" on the back of it, that way no one else can steal an unsigned credit card and sign the back of it (for signature comparisons). Our corporate policy is really strict on credit cards, and I've pissed off quite a few people when I've told them they can't use the credit card they have because their name is nowhere on it. And while this doesn't relate to online or credit card purchases, don't put your driver's license number on your checks. Yes, it's more convenient, but too many places don't check for ID if the number's already on the check. I had my purse stolen a year ago, and because my license number was on my checks, the people who stole my purse were able to write over $300 worth of checks at two different HEBs (grocery stores here in Texas), simply because HEB doesn't check IDs if the number's on the check. As for online purchases, what everyone else has said so far makes sense, although the only thing I've ever done is pay my cell phone bill online.

If you're ordering from (e.g.) Amazon then do it in all confidence. And, you'll usually get your stuff the next day. And, it's alot cheaper than stores. If it's a smaller, two-bit website then do it at your own risk.
