Quick questions about Batman:

I know this movie is old and I haven't read the comics much back then, but something I always wondered.

 

1.) Was the story originally made just for the movie or did they base it off a story from the comics?

 

2.) So, did the events that took place in the movie, is it considered an official part of the HUGE Batman saga or just a what-if story?

 

3.) I know the movie doesn't explain it, but what became of the Joker after the ending? (If it was explained elsewhere or just any good ass guesses?

I'm not really the right one to answer, but the storyline was pretty much Batman: Year Two, with a few superficial changes.

What happened to the Joker was never explained to the best of my knowledge. Interestingly, this was supposed to be a TV movie, but was pushed onto the big screen instead.

Oh, and I always thought of it as a lost chapter of Bruce Wayne's life.

If by the "Batman saga" you mean the comics, then no—nothing that happens outside of the comics has any bearing there.

 

If you mean the cartoons, I'm thinking it wasn't an Elseworlds-type deal, if only because every episode in the series was pretty much a standalone. Batman just did what he did, and I remember very few things happening that had an effect on any subsequent episodes. So basically, the movie's plot having no relevance to anything that proceeded to happen in the show doesn't mean much.

 

The main point against this would probably be that since Andrea killed everyone involved in her father's death that she got her hands on, it would be a given that she did the same to The Joker. But like you said, they never say exactly what happened. That considered, I'd chalk it all up to the creators wanting to get the ending they wanted (Joker gets his) without having to stop using him on the show or making it clear that none of this really happened. You know, like by finishing with a scene of Bruce waking up in a cold sweat and having a little conversation with Alfred when he comes in to check on him.

 

The way the ending was done, someone (especially if they never really followed the series) can make the obvious inference that The Joker's dead. And if they happen to see him on the show a few months later, it's like, "Well, we never told you she killed him," and you just assume he snuck away somehow.

 

Darn, I went on too long with this. And I bet someone's about to come up here with confirmed answers instead of making guesses. Then all my typing and deep, deep thought just gets rendered a waste of time, not to mention when I have actual important things to do, like put something up in the "Eagan wants back in" thread. Tomorrow or next month or something.

 

 

 

EDIT: Year Two, huh? I've never read it, but my understanding of what it was about isn't much like Mask of the Phantasm. But ... you know ... who cares.

I'm guessing that Andrea just beat the crap out of the Joker, and either a) let him live because of what Batman said to her [perhaps she delivered him straight to Arkham]. Or b) he escaped somehow.

It's basically a stand alone work.

 

None of this ever appeared in the regular comics or on the Animated Series. So there was never anything confirmed about the Joker.

 

But these are comics. Villians never die for good.

 

I also agree that it's the best Batman movie ever.

1.) The story is based upon BATMAN: YEAR TWO. The two most significant changes are the inclusion of The Joker in the role that Joe Chill filled in the comics (hired gun who wants to take out Phantasm), and that Phantasm was in reality Bruce's love interest and not the love interest's father as in B:Y2.

 

2.) Yes, it is part of Animated Batman continuity as proven by the recent developments of the BATMAN ADVENTURES comic book.

 

3.) Joker "died" pretty much every other time we saw him on the series. ("Be A Clown" is one notable example) And his returns are never explained. Just roll with it, man.

I've got the Batman & Robin Adventures Annual #1 with the Phantasm's return. It explains how The Joker survives. When they disappear, they go to the sewer and Andrea remembers "What will vengeance solve?". Then a huge explosion knocks Joker into the water and he escapes. Mr. Z answered everything else perfectly, though.

I was actually quite disappointed in this movie when it came out. The whole major plot twist with Andrea just made ZERO sense to me (The Phantasm was shown lifting up 300 lb. men with ease...how the hell could she do all that?).

 

That said I used to love the animated series. I always liked it better than any of the live action movies.
