Something that annoyed me

Recommended Posts

Guest Salacious Crumb

Anyone else notice the digitially placed ads on the football field during the college and Sunday Night game this weekend?

I have to say this is a new low now that ESPN/ABC can't even wait till the commercials to bash us over the head with products.

I do too but this $20 bill kept showing up at one of the games everytime there was a stop in play.

Guest Smell the ratings!!!

I notice them in baseball, because the announcers just happen to be talking about a sitcom/cell phone/movie just as they ad appears.

Another gripe about FOX: they put up that green screen behind home plate at Wrigley Field and break the sanctity of the ballpark, which is very minimalistic with its ads, at about two compared to the countless barrage at other parks. WGN and ESPN don't do this...just FOX.

Between downs they'll pop up on empty parts of the field, but I'm not totally sure how often it happens.

The $20 is the one I've seen the most so far.

At least you don't have Global digitally inserting ads in CBS' or FOX's broadcasts. Nothing more annoying than seeing an ad for Canadian Tire at a game in Miami.

Oh, and most of the time, I've noticed that ESPN doesn't have any ads behind home plate. Even in places that normally have a rotating ad screen back there, they just usually leave it blank.

I've never noticed it, so I guess it doesn't annoy me.

I frankly don't see the big deal, it's not like it affects anything. They should do like NASCAR and put advertisements on jerseys.

except the fucking Red Roof that just happens to have the words BUDWEISER on it...

Sure it's not Wrigly field itself but it's better ad placement then anything else...

the $20 thing is the Government advertising the new bills so people know that they are real. I dont mind em since it will educate people about how the new bills look, but I still bet I run in to at least one person that wont take a new $20 because it looks fake..

During the Sox game tonight. That green screen made the pitcher, batter etc look all fake. Especially during ads that had white backgrounds. It looked pretty friggin weird. I was waiting for some special effects to pop out.

How come they can't do this for boxing rings? Boxers always slipping on the ring cause of that friggin logo.

I do like those cool graphics that so stats, percents for football that show up on the field. Especially CBS kicker percent graphic, looks pretty cool.

Oh my yes HOW DARE THEY degrade sacred land.

Unless the ad directly affects the game or your viewing of said game, it's not a big deal. If ads in the background or in random shots of empty field affects your viewing of the game, you're just a picky bastard.

Hell, I'd love to see more ads during games if it would lead to less commercial breaks.

Nascar did something where they would have the race showing in a corner during the commerical...it was a great thing because it still showed the race but got the commericals in...Like Nascar REALLY needs endrose more stuff...

I wouldn't mind that either, but the problem is that we will never be commercial-free. The networks, like most everyone else, are greedy and the cash cow that is the 4-minute commercial break ain't dying anytime soon.

Fuck the networks and their in-game ads.

I thought that ESPN had it right when they were airing the World Cup last year.

Every 20 minutes or so, who ever was announcing would just say 'This portion of the game is brought to you by _______' and then the company logo would be part of the scoreboard.

That resulted in about 45 minutes of non-stop programming, with commercials waiting for halftime.

They should do like NASCAR and put advertisements on jerseys.

We're already halfway there

Like in college football when teams go to bowl games and they put the sponsors name patch (and to a much lesser extent, the bowl name) on their jersey

e.g. the "TOSTITOS Fiesta Bowl" and the "FED EX Orange Bowl"

Combine that with the huge advertisments that are most of the stadiums themselves (Generic Cellphone Park! Generic Airline Dome! Generic Orange Juice Field!), and all the other previous beefs mentioned, and this is the ad oversaturated sports world we live in.

I really wouldn't care if it lead to less commercials but if anything some games have had more this year.

There were 6 commercial breaks during the last 30 seconds of I think the Cleveland/Oakland game this weekend. There'd be one play and then commercial.

As annoying and offensive as I find the constant commercial breaks on TV sportscasts (particulary for football/basketball), they're even worse when you're actually live at the stadium.

Case in point, I was at the Cowboys/Cardinals game a couple of weeks ago. During the "TV timeouts" that they randomly took for no apparent reason, we were left to sit there with absolutely nothing to do (aside from watching the leauge score updates on the big screen). The breaks totally ruined the momentum and flow of the game, and bored the crowd silly. Then, by the time the game got back up and going again, it was time for another tv timeout. It was insane.

Breaks during baseball games are one thing; they only occur between innings or during a pitcher change. But to have the flow of a good football or basketball game ruined by the networks' quest for the almighty dollar is probably second biggest complaint I have about sports on tv (the first being Fox's game presentation).
